Thing is, my own history is intrinsically bound up between two fascinations and two Doctors. Doctor Who and Doctor Strange. Doctor Who, I started to watch with William Hartnell. Doctor Strange, my first encounter was the comics that were drawn by Steve Ditko. I chimed with both and hence my own love of Surrealism, which I strongly recognize intrinsic to both. Steven Moffat's era accentuated the Surrealism in Doctor Who - which some seemed uncomfortable with and many comments about it's elements totally misreading it, neurotypically, as a childish misbehaviour! - Doctor Strange and Doctor Who each inhabit their own universe, but neither are totally distinct from the other and have convergent elements. The TARDIS could easily fit into Steven Strange's world as it does within Steven Moffat's. Strange's Sanctum could easily be his TARDIS. Each deal daily with juxtapositions of distant and far-flung surrealities. William Hartnell's second story even had Dali's melting clocks within the TARDIS. What would my TARDIS be? A sanctum that has elements of the Surrealist home of Lee Miller and Roland Penrose which is Farley House and Gallery in Sussex with statues in the garden and, at it's heart, I would have Professor Chronotis' library study and attached, a herbalist's conservatory and a studio.

Ooooooh…I totally wasn’t expecting this. What a lovely surprise! 👏🏼

The movie that more than any other exposed the MCU haters as infant hypocrites, because we got a movie that's 100% an auteur filmmaker getting to put their own stamp on the franchise like they always claimed they wanted, and they just pissed and moaned that it wasn't enough like the others. Of course, the absolute best part is the massacre of the Illuminati, which is basically an open "fuck you" to anyone who wanted the movie to just be a giant franchise hand job as these versions of the heroes are all giant dickheads who are only there to be killed off. And we got the cherry on top just this year with the confirmation that John Krasinski won't be playing the main MCU Reed Richards in spite of all their threats to burn the studio down if it didn't happen. At least while he was here he gave us the very fun meme of Reed randomly blurting out other heroes' weaknesses to the bad guys. If I do have one issue, it's that the whole "third eye" thing at the very end is very tonally confused in combination with the mid-credits scene and I highly doubt whatever Strange appears in next will be able to properly follow it up, but other than that, this one is a total blast.

I’ve been behind on seeing MCU films in the theaters as of late. This one I made sure to catch, because I really wanted to see Sam Raimi tackle Doctor Strange. I love how Raimi brought his style to this, and I loved your reactions to this film becoming outright horror. You handled it better than everyone else in the theater that I was with, who, from the sound of it, were completely unaware Raimi was directing this. Loved your comment, “It was impressive and then it was gross.” to which I quipped, “Is that bad?” I like you loved the horror vibes that this had. Likewise, lovely to have Danny Elfman go full tilt with the score, especially the scene of the literal battle of music, complete with samples of Beethoven’s Fifth versus Bach’s Toccata and Fugue. America Chavez was a great character. She was quite a tough cookie. I was very impressed. Before the film released, I correctly surmised that Scarlet Witch would be the main villain. Reasons being: It was announced in advance that she would have a prominent role in the film, bordering on secondary lead, point one. Though I did not seek out trailers or ads for this, the few I did end up seeing noticeably did not feature Scarlet Witch barring a few small snippets, despite the aforementioned prominent role she was alleged to have, point two. And it occurred past a point that Marvel was mum on who a main villain would be, they didn’t even list Mordo as a red herring as I recall, point three. Taken separately those points perhaps mean nothing, but the points combined in conjunction with the thought I had midway through WandaVision that Scarlet Witch could conceivably fall to the Dark Side, it became relatively easy to deduce she was the main villain in this. And to the film’s credit, they don’t waste much time before the reveal. And it still ends up being an effective moment when the reveal happens, and I am pleased you were able to experience it unspoiled as your reaction to that was great. And as you note, Elizabeth Olsen delivered in this film with her performance in this. Yes, it is interesting how we had the journey of Scarlet Witch allowing the Darkhold to twist her mind until now, until now she has become the very thing she swore to destroy. And Elizabeth was excellent in her performance of Scarlet Witch’s mental state and tragedy throughout all of this. I loved everything of your analysis of Scarlet Witch, Jess, particularly in that you don’t condone her actions, but you understand completely where she’s coming from. A big talked about scene was the Illuminati sequence, complete with the pandering with the Mister Fantastic casting which you knew in advance. I LOVED that you were unaware of the beautiful return of our dear beloved Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier. Your reactions to Patrick’s scenes were beautiful, Jess. Their massacre was terrifying and wonderful to watch, except for Xavier’s death. I share your sadness on that one. I knew you’d love and be SO protective of dear Wongers in this. He’s a fucking champ in this movie. I mean, he always is, but here especially, he was doing the WORK. And it speaks to your investment in his character that you forgot he would be fine, especially as he’s slated to star in The Adventures of Madisynn and Wongers, which Marvel goddamn well better fast track that. Great that Rachel McAdams had a more substantial role in this. Loved Christine going to town with the BOOMSTICK against the damned souls. I shared your excitement when we got Deadite Strange. I started cackling in glee in the theater at that one, and later when Strange, Wongers, and America all going, “Come get some.” against Scarlet Witch. It was surely emotional when America forces Scarlet Witch to face what a monster she became. And in the end, it was saddening when she did what was right, was steady, and gave up the thing she wanted most. Then it sucker-punches you the scene of Strange and Christine. You’re not alone in the tears, Jess. Other observations: I see your point wishing for just a smidgen more of a deep dive into Strange’s mental state. I also concur with your comment about Strange and his pettiness. I said in response to that, “Strange doth possess a strong streak of petty bitchiness, yes.” In this film prominently highlighted by his tormenting Bruce Campbell as poor Pizza Poppa, who by the way, I am SO HAPPY you recognized him as no one in the theater I was with did. They also didn’t catch the Oldsmobile cameo, though that one makes sense. Oh, this was such a lovely Christmas Eve treat, this reaction. Thank you so much, Jess.

I so loved Raimi bringing his style to this. No one else in the theater I was in expected it, save for my cousin whom I saw it with, and she knew because I gave her a head’s up as she, generally speaking, doesn’t do too well with the horror genre. When she mentioned wanting to see it in the theater, I asked if she was aware that given Raimi would be directing, that it would be horror. She said she was willing to take the chance, and I said, “Ok, just don’t say I didn’t warn you.” As I mentioned, no one recognized Bruce Campbell. Once I stopped laughing at him being attacked by his own hand, it registered I was alone at that, I said, “Really? Nothing? None of you people know who that is?” I also smiled seeing the Oldsmobile, going, “Hup! Hey!” I never even particularly shared the consensus view on that fancast for Mister Fantastic, so yeah, it is hilarious he gets dropped in this, gets BRUTALLY killed, as if to say, “There! You got your wish, ya fucking crybabies!” and that’s all we’re getting. Only real complaints I had were, as I commented, how readily apparent that Scarlet Witch would be the villain even before I saw the film, though again, they worked with it well by just revealing it halfway through her first scene, thus not stretching things out. The other mild complaint is that again, Michael Stuhlbarg is underutilized, though given the story, I concede it would be hard to focus on him, and who knows, we could get more of him down the road.

I have to give some thought to exactly what my TARDIS would look like. Definitely a library would be in it with plenty of coffee. I could imagine the basic look would contain a lot of Gothic structure to it. Or maybe the art deco design that Boris Karloff’s character had in his mansion in The Black Cat. That would probably be something I could go for. Sesska’s Spa would most certainly be part of my TARDIS, for sure.

Ryan

My theater gave a huge cheer at Campbell, and even more at him fighting his hand. Maybe my area just has a big percentage of those kinds of people, since I also was part of an absolutely packed and enthusiastic midnight showing of Grindhouse despite its overall flopping hard.

Ryan

It feels like Kransinki himself wasn’t even the main appeal, but the idea of him plus Emily Blunt as Sue I can better see why people would get excited. And that actually might have worked against them, as ever since the whole James Gunn mess, Disney has been VERY careful to not look like they’re letting the fans tell them what to do, including Lucy Lawless implying she lost a potential Star Wars role because of all the people demanding she take over as Cara Dune.

Thomas Corp

Wish I could have attended that Grindhouse showing, or one like it, as that sounds like an insane amount of fun.

Thomas Corp

I could go for Emily as Sue, frankly I’ll take anything she’s in. Presently I’m hearing Pedro Pascal may be in the process of being courted for Mister Fantastic. I wouldn’t say no to that. I did hear about Lucy losing out on the potential Star Wars role due to people pushing for her to take over as Cara Dune. I’d love to see her in Star Wars.

Hm. You know, I've not seen The Black Cat. I'll have to look that one up. My favourite film of those I have seen with Boris Karloff is a comedy thriller, The Boogie Man Will Get You. I haven't seen that in a very long time. Now, that is reaction worthy! Peter Lorre co-stars. I bet Jess would love it. I suspect it is quite obscure for a Karloff film. Have you heard of it?

Thomas Corp

Heard of it. I’ve not yet had the pleasure of seeing it, however. Hope you enjoy The Black Cat with both Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff if you manage to see it.

Deeply saddened to hear that Richard Franklin - Mike Yates - died in his sleep early Christmas morning.

One could draw a lot of comparisons between Wanda and Anakin. Both a selfish love blind to the harm it causes everyone else. We love them yet we're heartbroken over what they do, think it's terrible, but kinda of understand at the same time.
