Early Access will start next week for What If. It's been insanely busy and though the second reaction is recorded, I haven't had time to edit it yet.

It’s been shaping up to be a super fun season so far! 🎄

Everyone's been calling this "Marvel does Blade Runner," but for me it was much more surprisingly an actual good take of the notoriously ridiculous "sun shield" from Highlander 2. Turns out Karen Gillan's Nebula voice fits perfectly in hard-boiled noir narration, and I'm actually now interested in seeing her get a full role as a Sam Spade type. I had my suspicions right from Yon-Rogg's betrayal that she'd seen it coming, but what really made me second-guess that was the animation, which goes the extra mile in making her look to be in excruciating pain. After the T'Challa Star Lord series sadly couldn't be done after Chadwick's death, I'd be very interested to see this quasi-Guardians team get their own.

Good to start What If...? again. Right out the gate, we have one of my favorite episodes of the series. I’ve loved Nebula from the beginning, and I loved her getting the spotlight here in this plot and setting that was very Blade Runner by way of Robocop. Karen was marvelous as she always is. And when you said, “I am so here for a Nebula focused episode.” I replied, “You and me both, Jess.” We again have a mild moment where I get too nerdy. They say the difference of this universe is Ronan betrayed Thanos, I paused and said, “Uatu, Ronan betrayed Thanos in the sacred timeline as well. The difference would be that in this universe, said betrayal was successful. Then again, he doesn’t seem to have the Power Stone, so maybe that would be the point of divergence, so, it’s cool.” Interesting to see Yon-Rogg again. Yeah, I think most everyone knew that Nebula couldn’t trust him as far as she could throw him. It’s the old thing of a dishonest man you can always count on to be dishonest. It’s the honest ones you must be wary of, as Nebula delightfully proved with her sabotage of the shield. Thanos was many things. A liar was not one of them. And it was never a trait he imparted to his children. The bad guys of course underestimated that, just as they underestimated her survival skills, especially after the dam scene, which made me yell, “Nebula just went and did a Peter Pan right there off of that dam, right there! Holy shit!!” And when her chances of survival are dismissed, I made the comment, “Oh you are STUPID sons of bitches.” It is quite lovely how Nebula found another band of misfits to be a part of. Loved all your reactions to Korg, who until you said his name, I kept blanking on it, and just kept calling him StonyMan. Big highlight of the reaction, Jess, was your living for Nebula’s Yondu look. Which yes, was indeed FIRE!! Your reaction to the final moments hit me, and I said, “Oh, well that got me in the heart a little bit.” All in all, a lovely episode, and a lovely reaction this Christmas morning. No problem, by the way, about the delay in the early access. You take the time you need. Thank you very much for this wonderful reaction, Jess.

I imagine most people try to burn Highlander 2 from their memories, hence the reason why many people haven’t made that connection in this episode. Seeing Karen in a full-on Sam Spade type role would be most excellent. I’d be fully on board with that. Same thing of anticipating Nebula seeing the betrayal coming, the bigger question was what exactly her endgame with it was. Thus, that was great when she revealed she sabotaged the shield. It would be interesting if this group got their own spin-off.

I'm very amused that for some reason, apparently Ronan is the one character they've decided shouldn't talk at all if they couldn't get the original actor. Though if Drax ever has a speaking role this season, I have to imagine they made sure to get Dave Bautista this time after all the crap they got about never even asking him to be in Season 1. And anyone who actually says "No one could survive that" out loud and doesn't immediately start the "Are we the baddies?" sketch deserves whatever they get.
