OVER ANALYZING AVATAR? WOOOOO AND WE ARE ALMOST BACK TO KORRRAA RAHHH

You’re the goat

Andrew Wenger

This series was so toothless when it came to any of the complex gender issues covered in the original. The writing of several characters suffers massively as a result! Sokka's early character development is totally removed because the show doesn't even want to mention it for some reason. Master Pakku loses the great character beat he has when he decides to teach Katara after learning the error of his ways. Instead he just passively accepts he's wrong rather than actively making up for it. Katara, finally, apparently never needed anyone to teach her water bending in the first place. She never needed a master, which ironically undermines any specific reason she may have had for being especially angry at Master Pakku for not teaching her. Rather, all she had was a general grievance with the rules of water tribe society which would prove to not even impede her own individual goals otherwise. And even if Katara's other goal was to fight, all she had to do apparently was not listen to anyone and do it anyway. Pakku and the other men just accept this later when it happens, so there was no obstacle preventing her from doing it after all, (or at the very least it doesn't felt like a 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭 obstacle was overcome here) which would've given Katara a character beat that would have felt "earned."

Just as savage as I was hoping for. Glad someone’s calling it as it is. Really can’t understand all the mindless lemmings who somehow think this show was a good adaptation or a good piece of entertainment at all. Would rather watch reality tv. Looking forward to more Korra!

She won't be blind and her parents will support her tomboyish lifestyle. lol

Fantastic work after you finish I hope you talk a lil about how to make a live action avatar work cause it seems like a real challenge ATP

FinnSword

They'll cut all the jokes she makes herself about being blind and release an article a few weeks before release of Book 2 talking about how they wanted to erase the "Ableism" of the original series. And then she'll be like every other girl in netflix's avatar so far: No real personality/fire to her and weirdly passive. She'll either be SUPER serious (and aged up) or they'll take her making snarky jokes in the original and she'll start up MCU humor quips. I can sense it. Either way, I doubt she'll be allowed to have depths to her. Toph in the original was a brash tough brat who DID have vulnerabilities and insecurities. She was an ACTUAL character. And along with the no "blind" jokes? I'm guessing they will also erase any trouble/struggles she faced due to being blind to seem more...progressive, I guess. Like no her struggling in the desert. No fear of flying.

Just curious what are you going to do after finishing over analyzing Korra season 4? Perhaps over analyzing other movies like Star Wars which you have referenced about you seem to have a great eye for cinema it would be cool.

I just hope the writers/directors take the criticism to heart and actually change their style to fit the series. It doesn't seem like it's necessary since they're already funded for season 2 and 3 but it'd be neat if they made things flow more nicely and let the characters be characters.

I HATE what they did to Katara. it's so bad.

Chris

Honestly, I kind of like what they did with the sexism thing? It was probably better in the original, because Pakku is built up to be hated and loses the moral battle, and it's obviously a lot more volatile about it. Here, the sexism is less "haha women weak" and much more ingrained undertones, which is what sexism actually is. It's Yagoda that drops the bomb that women aren't allowed to learn to fight, because it doesn't even occur to Pakku that Katara would want to learn to fight. Pakku isn't cartoonishly malicious about it, it's "just how it is." Most people enforcing sexism in the world aren't twirling their mustaches over it. Maybe with better execution, like escalation from both Katara and Pakku, it could have gotten the best of both worlds.

"The fire nation's here" "Ok" Lmao the writing in this show is so bad

I would've loved to see Hahn and Sokka's beef So Much. Don't really*hate* what they changed, conceptually, but they didn't have the time (*cough*or skill*cough*) for the execution.

loridragon

And god, they did Kiawentiio DIRTY. Her acting in Anne With An E when she was like. 13? proves she can handle big emotional scenes, so I feel like it has to be the directing and script at this point.

Fully agree. I understand where OA is coming from, we really need something more to "bite on to" or else the character loses a lot of what makes him actually interesting. It's good to hate a character that's a villain rather than not feel much about him at all. But, if it's live action, there also should be some degree of realism, and I don't think live action Pakku would have a reason to be super condescending about women not fighting. If I saw someone do that in real life, I'd think something was wrong with him and wonder why people let him be in charge of anything. If that's the case though, it would have been a good idea to give him something else to lean into. "You're a woman. You're a child, and you're NOT the Avatar. You have no skills, the fire nation is on its way right now, and again, you are NOT the Avatar. Teaching you is a waste of time, and I don't have time to be nice to you about it." There was just more they could have done to make Pakku stand out as a character and a problem, even while making the sexism more realistic.

whats the scene at 24.20 i dont remembre this at all. It is some confusing montage ?

Robert Vanek

Netflix is so scared of their characters being percieved negatively that they removed any and all flaws that people could conceivably have an issue with. It's why Sokka doesn't have his brief sexist arc (not really complaining about that one tbh), Aang doesn't goof off, and Katara doesn't get fired up with righteous anger. They're so afraid of Katara being seen as preachy or over emotional or Aang being seen as too much of a kid despite being 12. And the result is a group of emotionless losers that you can't relate to at all.

clueless

The fact that the script is written as if fictional characters and fictional cultures are subject to our tangible norms and mores is fucking infuriating. Faithfulness to the source material aside, I figured what makes creative works money is some level of escapism (among insightfulness, novelty, and idk how about some fun?) I'm not going to pretend I know anything about anything when it comes to making a show but it feels like they ham-fisted every progressive sentiment that exists and what we're left with is some milquetoast waste of time. As if the solution to all conflict is just modesty. I think that's why Xiao is so good. He's the only character who's just going to do him. It's not like he's bouncing off the walls either, he's just expressing himself like an actual human being. He's snide, he's quick-witted, the plot show's he's up to shit when he's not explicitly in frame. Everyone else seems like they've been directed to just memorize their lines and make eye contact with some sort of bad vibes ban. I'm all for playing it safe, especially when we're trying to a get a new lease on life for this series, but good lord if you're going to disarm a conflict you have to opt for another. How else is anyone going to gain any value from taking the time to consume it? Like they're already spending millions. At least let the writers write and the actors act if we're going just going to be staring at their face 95% of the time otherwise I ask the producers what money is there to be made? They could honestly upend all of the material at this point. I just want a good story. I want the characters to be able to take up space in my brain as people. And I want it to make internal sense. Netflix published Bojack Horseman and left me sick to my stomach because they portrayed the real dark corners of the human condition and it's incredible. I still think about those characters and I'm forced to consider angles I never would have had they not taken the time to put in such care and had I not sat down and given it a chance. I know for a fact Netflix can let them off the leash and it be widely successful. They're literally being given a golden ticket.

Doozie

I know I'm a bit late to the party here, but where's the rest of the Overanalyzing episodes for the Netflix adaptation?
