Muscled it out and got the video done. Proper Overanalyzing video will come later, but for now, enjoy my overall thoughts. For the record, this one will go up on youtube later on today because we gotta hit the algorithm, you understand. But I imagine the Overanalyzing might just have to stay on Patreon, and that'll come sooner rather than later, but not right away, so there's that to look forward to.

Absolutely legendary drop

That was very happy to see this review, because I thought I was going crazy, but to hear somebody who has deep appreciation for the show echo some of the sentiments and opinions that I had myself was very reassuring. I understand some people's critiques but I also saw too many people saying the movie was awful or the animation was garbage or the score and... I was getting tired. So thank you for the first positive review of a movie I thought was pretty damn good.

Liquor cause I know her

It would be wild for me to have Ice Cube play me. It was hard not to watch the movie early when it got leaked but I'm so glad I did. I can't imagine seeing my new favorite Avatar spirit on a smaller screen. The earth bender that hated feet was a great addition

dudestopchangingyourname

When i heard the movie leaked I made the decision to avoid it until the official release and im glad I did. A few critiques I have are that we only see suki in the last couple of minutes and that there's no iroh. Other then that this movie is almost perfect 2026 is the year of good movies

FunnyITGuy

I just finished watching the movie, and I have tears in my eyes. It was beautiful and wonderful. Any critiques I have are minor and could be applied to ANY film continuation of an animated series.

This film is fuckin eye sex but if I'm honest I can't help but feel like the gang is just kind of a lot of hanging meat in this film. Ya bring up Katara grounding Aang and facing Taga but outside of also calling Aang out for putting em in danger, that's basically the entirety of her contribution and for a little under 2 hours that's barely anything. Sokka weirdly feels regressed? Like he's always been silly but he's JUST silly here, he's even back to giving speeches to kids like in the first episodes it's very strange. I agree that Toph feels the most natural even if it is still weird to hear her call somebody hot. Not really a flaw just hits my ear weird ya know lol I get the film centers on Aang and I agree my boi doesn't get the credit he deserves I'm actually happy this is the case but truth be told the whole thing with Taga really feels like covered ground what with the Northern Air Temple, the whole Chakra thing, the Rift and facing Ozai. Not to imply losing the Air Nomads is ever something Aang should be "ok" with but a decade + surrounded by loved ones and being the arbiter of world peace as well as aforementioned developments has got to lessen the sting somewhat you'd think. I'm just not sure I buy a more developed Aang falling for this, even if he'd really think about it. Like Taga was frozen in ice for god knows how long, something you've only known yourself, the AVATAR to be capable of doing, meaning a previous Avatar went out of their way to freeze this guy. Fuck red flags, that's China! Not a huge fan of the Denied, I swear only 1 of em gets a name and I genuinely don't even remember what it is, they left zero impression on me and I didn't feel much of anything when that 1 named lady gets redeemed, pure whatever moment. Seeing her in an Air Acolyte uniform was cute tho I can't lie I'm also not a huge fan that the ending conflict is basically just a repeat of Ozai, even if it does look sick. Like was it ever in doubt that Aang was gonna spare him? I can't imagine anybody was biting their nails on that one Idk, as an epilogue I can kinda see this bookending the original nicely, and it is lovely seeing these characters I love so much again. On the other I couldn't help come away thinking this wasn't really all that necessary, we don't learn a ton of new things about the world and the characters practically don't move, counteractive to the very thing we like about em. Absolutely gorgeous film cannot stress that enough, but ultimately kinda pointless imo sad to say. Then again I did only see it the once, who knows maybe there's stuff I missed, I'd like to think so

Sokka not being a goofy Pien Dao who comes up w strategies was a fumble. You’re telling me he learned how to use a sword in like 2 days and spent the next 20 years not using one anyone bc he lost his first one ?😭

Oh no, am I just a curmudgeon? I was not a fan of this film at all. I'll agree with you on the art and animation, it is very beautiful. Even if, like you said, it's a bit jarring at first, I've seen shows and films change art styles a lot more drastically than that, and it has been nearly 2 decades since the show so I'm happy with what they did. What I'm not so happy about was the story. I know you said it was pretty basic, but even more than that it just felt predictable to me. Then there's the parts that kind of mirrored series 2 of Korra, except I think it borrowed a bit more than just that, they basically just remade the Equalists and then didn't really do anything with that ideology, just treated them as fake out villains before making them mooks for the real villain. The jokes didn't land for me at all, especially when there's a couple of scenes with a random, wacky character like the sandal hating avatar, that's just there to be unfunny and soak up runtime that could go to something I might care about. I feel like the jokes in the original show were just funny because the characters themselves were funny, and it was funny to see how they interacted with each other. Kind of related, but with Sokka being (almost?) flandesrised, I think it's worth remembering that the same writers who created Sokka, also created Bolin, so maybe it's not so surprising that he just became a goofy joke machine, and I say this as someone who also has Sokka as a favourite character, so I was pretty disappointed there. The writing also seemed pretty bad at times. There were some moments where they were doing the "second screen" style writing I've heard about, where the characters were just saying what was happening on screen as if I wasn't going to give the long awaited Avatar film my full, undivided attention. That kind of annoyed me. I think the reason why this never ended up in cinemas is because there's still a lot of disrespect for animation, even at a time where remakes and sequels are everywhere, the suits just couldn't bring themselves to give cartoons a chance, and it's pretty disappointing because I'm sure this would have looked even nicer on the big screen and it probably would have made a killing. I would've watched it the cinema, I didn't know I'd hate it, I was so excited. Now that I've written all this out, I realise how negative it sounds, but I suppose that's just how I feel. I don't regret watching it, I wouldn't have regretted watching it even if I had been able to see it at the cinema, but I just can't say I enjoyed this film, even if it was very pretty. Also, I understand why Fair Use Detective Sokka is here, but if you ever have to use him again could you upload a Sokka free version direct to patreon please? From what I understand of this site, it's a lot better about fair use and copyright then youtube.

Oh. I didn’t realise this had dropped.

highly highly recommend the chainsaw man movie if you havent seen it already, would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Bryce Lingle

Yes sir. I was surprised to see as much glazed of OA as I did

Jeremy

Who the hell said the animation was garbage?? The visuals are the one thing the movie undeniably hits out of the park

Jeremy

I agree. I thought the movie was just kinda fine when I first saw it, but I watched again recently and actively disliked most of it. Even on the first viewing though, it solidified what I'd thought about the franchise for a while; The original show was just lightning in a bottle. Mike and Bryan were not nearly as responsible for ATLA's genius as a lot of people assumed (and neither was Aaron Ehasz given what people say about Dragon Prince). There was just some kind of chemistry between the three of them plus a bunch of other less famous creatives at nickelodeon that created the show we love, and the series will probably never reach those heights again.

Jeremy

Man, I just rewatched this movie recently and I gotta say I think the rose tinted glasses did indeed sneak their way on to your face. This movie kinda blows. I think the character writing is the worst part. You said none of them get flanderized and I absolutely disagree. Aang and Katara are fine, I think. Zuko is also mostly fine, but he has such a small role he may as well have been a cameo like Suki. Sokka though, absolutely got flanderized. You kinda covered it, but I think it deserves more criticism. The OG show was SO efficient and elegant with it's characterization that I don't think we can blame this movies failings solely on the short runtime. When the airship starts sinking Sokka seems totally out of his depth, while in the OG show he was the strategist of the group. It would've been much more in character to have Sokka devise a plan instead of Zuko. He also seemingly lost all of his ability as a swordsman and a fighter and is just to reduced to screaming and running straight at the enemy with his boomerang. How cool would it have been if he managed to sneak in one real good hit on Tagah because of clever positioning or tactics. Obviously he's not gonna be a heavy hitter in that fight, but trying to keep up with the Avatar and the Gaang should make him a world class fighter in his own right, and that desire to keep up and be useful in combat was a great element of his character that's totally missing here. I haven't seen anyone mention it, but I think Toph's characterization is nearly as bad. It probably just stands out less cause she's sidelined like Zuko, but it's pretty bad. I mean, she has like 5 minutes of total screen time and she yells "I'm the greatest earthbender in the world" TWICE! From what I remember she says this once in the entirety of the show, and it's just a normal line that makes sense in context. She just invented an entirely new kind of bending and she's gloating to two people she has beef with. Here, it's been reduced to a fuckin catchphrase. It's just lazy "see, look! The line from the show! it's the thing you like, see?" type of writing. Other than that, she... thinks Tagah is hot? Kinda feels like a repeat of the beat in S3 where she's crushing on Zuko. Toph having a catchphrase feels like a really good encapsulation of what I find so distasteful in the writing. It's trying SO hard to captrue the magic of the original show, but it has no new ideas of it's own. You can really feel it with the back to back to back references in that opening Republic City scene. Hey, remember the hippies from the secret tunnel? Hey, remember the cabbage merchant?? Hey, remember the foaming mouth guy??? Hey, remember the cabbage merchant AGAIN???? Those ones are relatively harmless, but they do it even when it makes no sense in world. Like, what do you mean the giant koi fish water spirit monster from the season 1 finale just SHOWS UP? That monster is not the Ocean Spirit. That monster is the effect of the Ocean Spirit in an blind rage, possibly magically effected by the death of the Moon Spirit, plus Aang's uncontrolled avatar state spirit energy. It was seemingly a very unusual, very specific mixture of spirit magic that created that monster. That's not what the Ocean Spirit looks like a on a normal Tuesday, but fuck it! Throw it in, cause it's what people remember. Sigh. Then that entire spirit world scene... I'm not even gonna try to put into words how dumb that scene was. We can all just agree that shit sucked right? The power scaling is also pretty fucked. That's not something that's hugely important, but getting to see the Gaang that saved the world at 12 in the prime of their lives, you'd hope to see some pretty insane feats of bending, right? You'd at least think they wouldn't get solo'd by one guy or struggle with a group of goons who JUST got airbending. You kinda gloss over Tagah's new airbending moves, but I really don't like them. The OG show wasn't perfectly consistent or logical with it's powers, but the movie really seems too preoccupied with what would be coolest or flashiest. I think the air bullet is... okay, but the teleport move is just dumb. And beyond those two Tagah is just WAY too powerful. Immediately after waking up from a coma, he airbends a falling mountain that Aang couldn't even in the avatar state. He crushes a giant metal airship with just airbending. He oneshots Aang in the avatar state even before he's transformed into a glowing demon thing. I guess he's extra powerful, cause he got his powers from the staff, or maybe airbenders were just built different back in his day, but still. It feels excessive Oh and lastly, something that really bothered me is the way that both the narrative and characters treat bending as a stand in for culture. And this is in the same movie where we have a faction of non-benders demanding to be recognized. Culture is art, music, food, religion, politics, etc. not just bending. Bending = culture is the kind of simplified logic that I would've overlooked in the nickelodeon kid's show, but both the character's and audience are adults now, and the movie acts like it wants to really deal with the genocide and Aangs trauma head on. It feels so lame to have Aang and Tagah talk about giving random modern day earth nation or water tribe citizens airbending, like that's somehow going to restore their culture. This was already made apparent when Korra did the exact same plotline. I mean, Korra still kind of treats it like bending coming back is the same as the air nomads coming back, but it at least makes it clear that the new air nomads already have their own culture and don't want to give up everything and go live in an air temple. I honestly think it could've been so cool to have a movie that purely focused on Aang searching for relics of his culture and taking the time to properly grieve. No big world ending stakes. maybe not even a lot of fight scenes or bending. Just actually explore Aang's trauma in a way the OG show never could. It would've taken much more skilled writers to pull something like that off, and it would run the risk of feeling too different from the show, but I think it could be done. I'm tempted to write another paragraph about how lame it is that the finale introduced super sayan style power ups, or how utterly unconvicing the death fake outs were, or how much of the plot feels like ground that's already been covered by either ATLA or Korra, but I'll stop here. Sorry for writing a whole novel in your comments, but I needed to rant. This movie was really disappointing imo. You're 100% justified in gushing over the visuals though. Pure eye candy for 90mins and it never lets up edit: OH! WAIT! HOLD UP! I'm sorry, but can we talk about the absolute character assassination of having Appa willingly fly off with Tagah immediately after he murders Aang?? I guess Appa wasn't there to witness it happen, so he doesn't know? But he's still just abandoning the Gaang on an island to fly off with some random guy he met yesterday. Appa would never. 0/10 worst movie ever
