Chapter #4: Honoring your word.
Hermione Granger was sitting on her desk, staring at a moving painting of a field filled with flowers, she couldn’t help but smile as she stared at it; that’s where she wanted to be, surrounded by flowers, sleeping on the grass as she gazes at the clouds and forgets about her problems and stress.
“Hermione?” A voice tried to get her out of her train of thought.
And speaking about stress, in front of her there was it was her best friend, the one everyone thought she was going to end up with and instead, she choose the other friend, a decision she would never regret, if he was bringing so many problems as her best friend and employee she couldn’t imagine how awful things would be if they were an item.
“Harry…Why are most of the problems that put my position at risk always linked to you?” Hermione wondered with a tired tone.
“Hey, that’s a very bold accusation…” Harry tried not to look at her as he said this.
“It’s not an opinion, it’s a fact!” Hermione wasn’t playing around any longer. “Oh, you don’t believe me? Let me remind you of the Sanchez case, you were supposed to watch over his illegal potion distribution in the muggle world, and what did you do? You fucked his wife and killed him in his sleep, and yet you still had time to have fun in Ibiza!” Hermione said with an angry tone.
“Well, how else was I—” she stopped him again.
“Rita Skeeter almost exposed our organization because you brought her into your apartment, and she found documents about us, it took us a long time to successfully erase her memories!” Hermione was getting tired.
“Well, yes, but—” Hermione suddenly raised her hand.
“And now…Lucius Malfoy, our biggest suspect behind the great quantities of “climax” on the streets, is dead, Harry…He died under your watch and on your first day at the job…This is not a game, Harry, that potion is causing an immense addiction, it gives people orgasms while imagining having their dreamed partner, if they don't control its usage, they reach a point in which they feel they don't need to eat or drink water!” Hermione finally finished.
Surprisingly, Harry didn’t snap at her, considering how unfair she was being; in fact, he remained calm.
“Okay…I must admit that I’ve screwed some cases, however…I think you’re being too harsh on me with this thing Hermione...He was poisoned,” Harry said with a serious tone.
That didn’t make her feel better.
“It was something no one saw coming, even if I wasn’t there, he was going to take his wife to that coffee shop, he was going to die, or who knows, even Susan would—” Harry suddenly stopped his rant.
“Well, what’s done is done, you’re out of the operation, go home, you’re not suspended, but for now I don’t want to see you until further notice,” Hermione really felt conflicted towards her.
She knew she was being too harsh, but she was too proud to admit it.
“No…Please don’t get me out of the case, Hermione…There’s something weird behind the whole situation, and I think that…Lucius wasn’t supposed to die, I think the real target was Susan…” Harry told her with a serious tone.
Hermione could only sigh.
“I must admit that…I feel conflicted, on one hand, Susan is such a good girl, but on the other hand, she married a former Death Eater, so, it’s hard for me to feel bad for his death,” Hermione’s bluntness would've surprised their friends a few years ago.
However, after the things she experienced during the war, and what happened in Malfoy’s manor, there’s no sympathy left in her towards bigoted people who were still stuck in ancient times.
“I must admit that she doesn’t deserve to go through such a traumatic experience, and if she’s really in danger, we need to get the Auror department involved, if it makes you feel better, I’m going to tell Kingsley your theory, but aside from that…We’re not getting involved in her life…I’m sorry, Harry,” Hermione said with a pitiful expression.
Harry wanted to get angry at his best friend, but he knew she was under a lot of stress to perform her job correctly, so, he didn’t do anything, in the end, he just nodded.
“So…I guess I’m on break until further notice?” He asked with a serious expression.
“Yes, with Lucius dead, our investigation has become quite useless…He was the number one subject, so go home, Harry…Try not to get in trouble before I call you again,” Hermione sent him a glare, and Harry nodded.
He was too frustrated, he knew there was more behind this attack, this wasn’t the typical organized crime type attack, no, this was personal, someone was after Susan but he was sure they made a mistake and killed Lucius instead, that killer did a favor to the world but, if she was truly the real target then, she was still in danger.
“Well…Lucius paid me to protect her one year in advance...I promised to protect her, and I always honor my word…” Harry mumbled to himself once he was outside the Ministry.
At that moment, he decided, and soon, he apparated away from the building and landed on Malfoy’s manor, the vibe was grim; he entered as if he owned the place, and some wizards tried to stop him, but he easily defeated them.
“Stop this nonsense…This is a funeral, have some respect!” That was Draco Malfoy.
It seemed like the blonde had been drinking; his eyes were red and puffy, and he seemed tired, it was a logical reaction, after the war, Harry was almost in the same state because of all the friends they had to bury, but he didn’t have time to indulge in alcohol or drugs back then, so, he went through that completely sober.
“Harry…What are you doing here?” Never in his life had Harry seen a widow so beautiful.
Susan was wearing a long black dress that hugged her curves and a veil, this wasn’t the moment to think about her like that, so he clarified his voice more to calm himself than for anything else.
“I know I just worked for you for barely a day, Mrs. Malfoy…Draco, but I came here to offer my condolences,” Harry was being honest this time.
Susan nodded as she wiped some tears off her eyes, Draco didn’t trust him, but in the end, he nodded.
“Thank you, now you can leave,” Draco tried to kick him out.
“I can’t…I came here to protect Lady Malfoy; that was her husband’s last wish, and also, he paid me one year in advance to protect her,” Harry declared with a serious expression.
It’s clear that Malfoy wasn’t happy to see him at this place, one would think that after the war he would get over that attitude and become civil towards him but that couldn’t be farther from the truth, still, Harry didn’t care about his opinion, he came here to protect Susan, the redhead suddenly got close to him and nodded at him.
“Are you sure, Susan?” Asked Draco with a serious tone.
“Yes…I’ll be fine, he defeated Voldemort, right?” she said with a sad smile.
The blonde nodded at his father's widow, and soon, the funeral continued, Harry nodded at the redhead; it was heartbreaking to see her so defeated. Regardless of her marriage choices, she was a good woman who didn't deserve to go through this.
