Chapter #6: Choices.

Susan felt lost, she was resting on the bed that she and Lucius bought, it took them a while but they found the perfect bed to sleep together and now, she was alone, she was staring at the ceiling looking completely lifeless, she had no idea about what to do with her life now, just a few days ago, she thought she had life figured out but she couldn’t be farther from that as destiny had clearly other plans for her.

She was still young, and yet, she felt like she had aged a lot these past few days, someone tried to kill her and instead killed her bodyguard, and then, her husband was murdered and she couldn't do anything to prevent it, it’s clear that she was a bad omen, nothing good can come out for people who want to associate with her.

She was too lost in her thoughts to realize someone had entered the room, it was Harry, and he was looking at her current state with a sad expression, he didn’t want to see her like that; he wanted to do something, but people process grief at their own pace. There’s nothing that can speed up the process.

“Lady Malfoy…” Harry started.

Susan just let out a groan, but she didn’t look at him; she was still staring at the ceiling with a lifeless expression.

“Yes?” She asked, barely a hint of emotion in her voice.

“It’s time for lunch; it’s been almost a day since you've been stuck here…” Harry didn’t want to intrude.

However, he knew he had to try something; seeing her wasting her life away was tragic. She was still young; there was much left for her to live. Seeing her so defeated was depressing. She has indeed gone through something terrible, but he was sure that not even that asshole Lucius would like to see her like this.

“I’m not hungry…I want my husband back, that’s what I want right now,” she said on the verge of tears.

Harry now felt uncomfortable; he wasn’t good at comforting women, that’s something he had known for some time, after all. According to Hermione, the lack of love from his relatives has made him quite insensitive. Still, he decided to move and sat beside her. Then, the dark-haired wizard placed a hand over one of her own.

She looked at him for a few seconds and then sat on the bed before she did something he wasn’t expecting. She hugged him and started to sob. He was confused by her actions to say the least, still, he didn’t push her away. If only his environment had been better, he could've been better company for her.

Their neglect has caused serious issues for him, and one of them is his inefficiency when it comes to dealing with other people’s feelings. Still, instead of feeling confused, he just decided to follow Susan’s steps and hugged her back. She sobbed harder as he patted her back.

“It’s alright…Let it go,” he repeated what he witnessed when Arthur comforted Molly over Fred’s death.

He was glad he placed a silencing charm so she could cry as loud as she wished to, he doesn’t know for how long they were in that position but he didn’t feel angry, all the opposite, he felt warm and fuzzy after doing this and then, she finally decided to break the hug, after that, she started to clean the tears off her face.

“I’m sorry…” She said as she looked at his messed-up shirt.

“It’s alright, your husband hired me to be your backbone, Lady Malfoy, and even if I wasn’t on good terms with him, especially after the rumors about me and his ex-wife…I always honor my word. He paid me a year in advance, and he begged me to protect you during his last moments, and that’s what I’m going to do, no matter what!” Harry promised her with a serious expression.

Susan was surprised, even though they’re from the same generation, and she saw him many times during their shared classes and during the meals at Hogwarts, Susan didn’t personally know how Harry Potter was, and now she was seeing why he was so regarded by everyone who had interacted with him, aside from the fact that he saved the world of course.

“Thank you for your kind words, Harry, but…I think it would be for the best if you don’t get too involved with me…I’m a bad omen, Harry, all the people I get close to get hurt or killed…My aunt was murdered in front of me…Hannah was injured while trying to protect me during the final battle, and Lucius…My dear Luce…He’s gone too,” she started to sob again.

But instead of holding her, Harry started to laugh, which confused her, so she glared at him with tears in her eyes.

“Yeah…My disgrace is very funny…I’m glad at least it amuses you!” She complained as the tears became more intense.

Harry, on the other hand, suddenly stopped laughing, but he still had a smile on his face. A charming smile, or at least that's what Susan thought, even though he acted like a jerk.

“I’m sorry, Susan, it’s just that…I was like you before the war…You see, the day I turned seventeen, I had to move out of my muggle relatives’ home. There was a blood protection that served as a shield against anyone who wanted to hurt me or my family,” he paused, and she looked at him with an interested expression.

He drifted away a little, but then he clarified his voice.

“You see…My friends came up with a plan to help me; some of them turned into me using the Polyjuice potion, so once the protection fell, we complicated Voldemort's plan to get to me. However, I didn't want to use that plan; I didn’t want to put them at risk…I had already lost a lot of people who got close to me. I thought I was a bad omen, but sometimes, no matter how much you think you can overcome the challenges by yourself, in reality, you're probably making things easier for your enemies,” Harry told her with a serious expression.

“Enemies?” She asked with a confused expression.

“Susan…It's obvious someone’s out there trying to kill you…They tried to kill you and failed a week ago, and then, when Lucius was poisoned, I think that the poison was for you, not him,” he confessed with a sad expression.

He knew this was going to make her feel more guilty, but she needed to know that information. He couldn’t lie to her and make her believe that everything was fine; someone was out there trying to kill her, so there were two choices for her: either she runs and hides for the rest of her life, or she faces her enemies and fights back.

“Merlin…So, it's my fault he’s dead?!” She felt horrified right now.

Harry quickly grabbed her by her shoulders.

“No, listen to me, Susan, only the ones who poisoned your husband are the ones at fault!” Harry tried to make her understand.

“But they were coming after me, it’s my fault!” She insisted.

“Susan…If you were successfully killed, I don’t think Lucius would’ve loved to mourn you and his son or daughter who might be growing inside you; it’s neither yours nor his fault, so the question here is…What are you going to do?” He asked with a serious expression.

“What do you mean?” She was confused.

“You have two options…Are you going to run away and hide? Or will you find and kill those people who are responsible for your husband’s death? In either case, I want you to know that you have my help for whatever thing you choose to do, so…What’s your choice?” Harry questioned with a calm expression.

Susan was tired and confused. That was a good question, and she had no answer for it.
