Chapter #9: A dinner full of secrets.

A barely lighted room with candles was decorated with expensive paintings and many other fancy things. This was the place in which Susan’s plan was going to take place. It’s clear that the former minister thought this was some kind of romantic night; he couldn’t be farther from the truth, but even in this awful situation, the only thing Susan could think of was vengeance against those who killed Lucius.

She hated the idea of being part of Fudge’s fantasies; however, he has the information she needs, and she swore she was going to do anything she could to fulfill the promise she made to Lucius before coming here.

“Ah, Susan…Once again, I’m sorry for what happened to Lucius. He was a good man,” Fudge said as he brought some glasses filled with firewhisky.

Soon, he sat next to the red-haired widow; she clearly didn’t want to be here, but she was faking it with ease. After all, she needed to get the information she needed at all costs.

“Yes…It’s such a shame, now that he’s gone, I’m all alone, and you see, not many men could love a widow like me, especially older men…Those are my kind of guys, powerful older wizards,” she said with a fake smile before she took a sip of her drink.

Fudge smirked like a fool. It seems like he was falling into her trap. It was surprising to see this side of Susan, but she has been through a lot these past few years. Long gone is the naïve girl who plays by the rules, although there are some extremes she's not willing to go through.

“Do you find former ministers attractive?” He was such an idiot; he fell for her so easily.

“Cornelius?” She asked with a surprised expression, she wasn’t, she was actually expecting something like this from him. All these important men were the same, always trying to make a show of power.

“Well, it was clear that Lucius didn’t deserve you, I mean, no disrespect to your late husband, but compared to me, he's not that amazing…Not many women can boast about a former minister being interested in them, and also, you need to know that I’m running for minister once again; having a woman like you by my side would certainly be a blessing,” he said with a happy expression.

Susan was amused by this situation, maybe this is what women like Daphne Greengrass felt when they played with men who had the wrong idea, to be fair, she hasn’t given the former minister any hint that she wants him, if he misunderstands her intentions, it’s his own fault but this was an opportunity to get some secrets from him, she couldn't let it escape.

“You flatter me, Cornelius, but trust me, you don’t want me in my life, the people I love always end up dying…This country can’t afford to lose you. You're the only hope of our world, you know?” She said with a weak smile.

“Do you really think that?” Even he was having a hard time believing such praise.

Susan just shrugged and giggled.

“I really, really mean it, Cornelius, I mean, my husband trusted you, and if he did, I’m sure it was for a good reason.” Susan took a pause.

“Thank you for your words, Susan. It’s people like you who motivate me to get back to the office, that damn Kingsley will destroy our society in the way we know it, each day he’s becoming more pro-muggle,” the former minister complained.

Susan just nodded. She didn’t care; in fact, those policies didn’t affect or benefit her. The people who complained about them were so loaded and rich, and yet, they were always complaining. She smiled at him as she placed a hand on his own.

“See? Someone like you is clearly destined to get our world back to how it was,” Daphne said in a fake, gentle tone.

“Susan…I know you’re still grieving, and I understand that Lucius was a great man that no one would be able to replace, but one day, I hope you give me the chance to court you.” The man was shameless; it hadn't even been a week since his supposed friend died.

He was praising her husband while trying to get with his wife not even a week after he was buried, for fuck’s sake, Fudge was there on the funeral begging to be buried instead of Lucius, it was true what Lucius told him, every smile was fake in this world of theirs, honest people out there were so rare, she couldn't help but think of Harry with gratefulness, the thought of him was helping her to survive being in the presence of such disgusting man.

“You flatter me, Cornelius…Only time will tell.” That was a good response.

She was giving him false hope, and at the same time, she was covering herself for when she finally rejects him. The man smiled like a pervert; he was surely having many fantasies in his head about her.

“Lucius was truly blessed to have you, dear; such a shame is gone, even after I got kicked from the ministry, he still was my friend…” Fudge took a sip of his drink.

Susan finally saw an opportunity.

“Is that true? Why did you fight a few days before he was killed?” Susan finally asked the question.

Fudge almost choked on his drink before he nervously smiled.

“Fight?” He questioned with a confused expression.

“Yes, Lucius told me you two had a big disagreement, but he never explained to me the reason, something I find weird because of how close you two were. As you said, he was with you even during your difficult times,” Susan tried to act cool, but she was a wreck internally.

Fudge didn’t want to talk about that; however, for some reason, he felt the need to be honest, a rare trait amongst successful politicians.

“He was having an affair, so I confronted him,” Fudge finally said.

Of all the things she could hear, that’s the last one she expected. She was trembling now; she wanted to believe that it was all a lie, but inside, she knew it was true. Women couldn’t help but throw themselves at him all the time; she knew that the former minister was being honest for some reason.

“No…It can’t be,” Susan couldn’t believe it.

“I’m sorry, but that’s the truth, and that’s why I was so angry at him, cheating on you should be considered a crime!” The man said bitterly.

Susan couldn’t help but feel some sympathy towards the man.

“I’ve been in love with you for a long time, Susan, but you were my friend’s wife, but when I learned about the affair, I was completely enraged, so we ended up fighting,” the man sighed.

“Who was the other woman?” She finally asked, not really caring about his feelings.

Susan knew this was going to eventually happen. The pureblood wealthy circles that her husband was part of were always filled with old, powerful men who tried to get her to cheat on her husband with them. They were delusional, of course; just because her husband was older, it didn't mean she only dates old men.

“Pansy Parkinson,” he finally said with a serious tone.

“Thank you…Now, if you excuse me…I need to use the loo,” Susan was tired of pretending.

She went to the bathroom without waiting for a response from him, and once she was there, she looked at the mirror with anger until she felt a presence coming out of thin air. It was Harry Potter, and he was hiding under his invisibility cloak.

“The veritaserum in his drink worked really well, but…I’m sorry to hear what Malfoy did behind your back, Susan,” he told her with a sad expression.

Soon, she started to sob, and Harry held her tightly as she released her emotions; it was such a tragic sight.
