Chapter #11: Information is valuable.

The reunion with Hannah wasn’t as awkward as Susan thought it would be. Yes, they were embarrassed at first, but in the end, they couldn’t pretend they didn’t miss each other, and they even cried at some point. Neville and Harry decided to leave them alone so they could reconnect.

“So…What are you doing with Susan, Harry?” Neville asked in a confident tone.

After the war, long gone is the shy guy who is even embarrassed of asking questions; Neville knows what he’s capable of, and not even his grandmother can destroy his confidence, something that makes the old witch happy, that’s what she always wanted for Neville, to become a self-sufficient man who knows his worth as the Longbottom heir.

“I was hired by Lucius to protect her after the attempt on her life,” Harry said with a calm expression.

“Attempt on her life?!” To say Neville was shocked would be an understatement.

“I know it’s shocking because it didn’t appear in the newspapers, blame Lucius Malfoy’s influence, but it was also a good thing, the less the criminals knew if they won, the better, and I’m sure that not knowing if she was dead or alive, put them nervous,” Harry responded, and soon Neville placed a chocolate ice cream in front of the emerald-eyed wizard.

Neville didn’t say anything for a while, but then he clarified his voice.

“So, this has nothing to do with the “climax” potion that’s been making noise lately?” Neville asked with a smirk, and Harry sighed.

“So you know about it, uh? I should’ve guessed; everyone but me knew about this, I guess I’m too disconnected from reality, but yes, you’re right and wrong at the same time. I was supposed to be undercover and discover Lucius's connection with that potion,” Harry sighed.

“But then he was killed...” Neville said, and Harry nodded.

“So, even though I wasn’t supposed to continue with the investigation, Lucius paid me one year in advance, so this is how I ended up with her…I honor my words, after all,” Harry said with a calm expression.

Neville chuckled.

“Is that so? Then why were you looking at her as if she were the most precious thing when you two arrived? That’s the look I know I have every time I look at Hannah,” Neville patted him on the back.

Harry didn’t get embarrassed, but to know that he looked at her like that made him feel a bit guilty; he was supposed to protect her, not fall in love. Despite what it looks like, he’s really trying to do his job.

“How do you know about the case, anyway?” Harry wanted to change topics as fast as possible.

"What? Didn’t Hermione tell you? Hannah and I are on her payroll, we’re technically her spies, even if people admired my feats after the war, it’s been hard for them to believe that I’ve changed that much which makes it easy for strangers to trust me, as someone who works at the Leaky Cauldron that helps a lot because most people put their guard down and say things they shouldn’t, as for Hannah, let’s be honest Harry, even if she was pretty she never stood out, that makes us the perfect spies!” Neville laughed.

Harry remained silent for a few moments and then looked at Neville with a pleading expression.

“Please, don’t tell Susan that I’m part of the secret service; she could misunderstand things, because not only do I want to solve that case, but I also want to protect her,” Harry was serious this time.

Neville didn’t say anything for a while.

“Have you two done something…?” Neville questioned him.

“She accidentally kissed me, although she later apologized,” Harry explained.

“How is she right now? What is she planning to do now that her husband is dead and her life is in danger?” Harry didn’t know if it was right for him to tell Neville this, but he trusted him with his life.

“She wants vengeance, Neville, that’s the thing she wants the most, and I’m going to help her achieve it so she won't destroy herself in the process. After all, I have experience when it comes to vengeance,” Harry declared without any hint of doubt in his words as he remembered the battle with Voldemort.

To say Neville was surprised would be the understatement of the century, and soon, he finally realized what was going on. Harry Potter, one of his best friends, was in love with Susan Bones. Well, it seems like he has a history with redheads, so the Longbottom heir smiled at his friend.

“Don’t worry, mate, I won’t tell anyone about this, not even Hannah, in fact, even if you’re temporarily suspended, I’m going to give you some information that will help you,” Neville suddenly took him to his main office.

Harry was surprised to see that there was a pensive.

“Wow, where did you get this, Neville? These are very rare!” Harry said with a surprised tone.

“Hermione gave me one, she said it would help with our data collecting job, and she was right, I always look at memories and find more details that passed over me the first time,” Neville explained, and Harry nodded.

Yes, that sounded like a very Hermione-like idea; she was always trying to maximize time and effort.

“But we’re not here to check the memories, not yet at least, let me check…You said the date was…” Neville muttered more to himself, but loud enough so Harry could hear.

Soon, he moved towards a bookshelf filled with notebooks; it seemed like Hermione introduced them to Neville; she was a clear fan of those things.

“Okay this is it... You told me that Lucius Malfoy’s death was around 12:00 PM, right? Well, that same day, around 11:58: AM, there was this old guy, bragging to his friends while drinking, it seems like he was going to make quite the buck, it was going to be a quick job and once he did it, he said he was going to visit his girlfriend who apparently works on an adult club on Knockturn Alley,” Neville explained.

Harry looked at all the information, and he was even surprised to find a picture of the old wizard, clearly taken when Neville was in the pensieve.

“It’s not him,” Harry said, disappointed.

“There’s an extra detail, do you remember our fourth year, Harry? Well, I was able to tell that there was a certain smell coming from the man, and when he left the place, he took a sip of a potion and threw the vial on the street. It smelled like something I had smelled before. Do you remember when fake Moody used the cruciatus in front of me and then spoke with me privately? Well, there was a certain smell coming from him, the vial that guy threw away had the same smell, I swear that on my life and magic, Harry,” Neville’s words caused Harry to gulp.

“Polyjuice potion!” Harry said with a shocked expression.

Neville nodded with a smirk.

“I’m sorry I didn’t report this to the headquarters, but he looked like a crazy old man to me; in fact, his friends mocked him because he was using Polyjuice potion to look handsome for his girlfriend,” Neville said, disappointed about himself.

“It’s alright, Neville, I’m sure you were focused on other things that day, but this information…It’s more than enough, now we have a possible suspect. Do you have information about his friends, Neville?” Asked Harry with a curious look.

“Yes, they’re regulars, they always come before twelve in the evening to eat lunch, and then they come at around five, it seems like they’re ministry workers,” Neville explained, and Harry nodded.

Harry smirked with satisfaction; they finally had a suspect.
