Chapter #14: A loose cannon.
Harry was in an office, and his thoughts were completely focused on what was going on with Susan. The accusations were serious; he needed to find a way to get her out of jail. He couldn't bear the thought of someone as nice as her going to that place. It’s a shame that the courts don’t allow veritaserum anymore.
The reason is that apparently the potion takes as true what you believe, not what you actually see, ignoring the fact that deep inside, the brain still knows what the truth is no matter how much you try to convince yourself, just because some wizards like himself and Dumbledore managed to be unaffected by it, that doesn’t mean every wizard is going to be able to have the same response.
“Harry…Harry…Harry!” Finally, a voice broke him out with his thoughts.
He looked at the source behind that voice, and he gulped. It was Hermione, his best friend, and she was looking completely angered. She had her reasons; he shouldn’t have been in that place with Susan, but it happened, there was nothing he could do about it, what was done was done.
“Hermione…Have I told you today how pretty your eyes look? Oh, by the way, your hair color combines with…The color of your...Belt!” Harry said in a fake, flattering tone.
“Stop it, Potter…This is embarrassing,” another voice said behind him. Harry couldn’t help but roll his eyes.
It was Kingsley, to have a private meeting with the minister should’ve been an especial occasion for anyone, but that clearly wasn’t what was currently going on.
“Hey, Kingsley, nice cloak...Did you lose weight?” Harry tried to ease the tension.
Now, both of his superiors sighed and shook their heads in disappointment.
“What?” He asked, feigning ignorance.
“What?” Hermione said before faking a small laugh. “What?! I just can’t believe you!” She snapped.
Harry decided to remain silent as he stared at a wall. He knew what was going to happen; she was going to lecture him, so he decided to let her, and soon he started to hear many complaints about himself. Harry wanted to sleep, but he knew that would only make things worse for his ears.
“Do you seriously have any idea what you did? You put our organization in danger of being exposed!” Hermione slammed her hands on her desk.
Harry didn’t say anything; he was just waiting for his turn to have the floor.
“Why are you with Susan when I specifically told you not to get close to her?!” Hermione complained.
Harry finally had enough.
“Because I just couldn’t let her on her own and also…Because I was paid a year in advance to assist her!” Harry spoke with no hesitation.
This caused them to look at him with surprised expressions. In the end, they sighed.
“I can’t believe it…You’re in love with her,” Hermione said with a surprised expression.
“What? No, there’s no—” Harry was stopped by Kingsley.
“I can’t believe it…Harry Potter, the ice-cold killer, is in love; may Merlin have mercy on us because something awful is going to happen, maybe it will be the end of the world? We can only hope, at least I can quit my job if that were to happen!” Kingsley smirked.
Harry wanted to get over this conversation, but he knew there was no escape, so he just sighed.
“Look, it’s irrelevant how I feel about Susan, I’m just doing the right thing and also…I think we’re getting closer to the truth about that potion you were talking about. I’m not sure if Lucius was the mastermind behind it, but I can assure you that his death was related to it…After all, my sources told me that the Aurors found a box filled with those potions at that guy's place,” Harry told his best friend.
Those words caused tension in the room, that was a problem Hermione and Kingsley had been dealing with for some time. There was nothing they could do to stop the flux of potions on the streets.
“It’s clear that Lucius' killer was paid with potions. If we assume Lucius was the leader behind the operation, then it’s clear that something happened within the organization, a coup, maybe, which is why they got rid of the previous leader, of course, that’s just a guess,” Harry explained, and they looked at him with calm expressions.
However, before the conversation could continue, someone else barged into the room, it was Ron, and he was looking anguished.
“Ron, calm down. What’s going on?” Asked Hermione with a concerned expression.
“Minister, Hermione, Harry…You need to see this!” Ron urged them.
They quickly got up, and a few minutes later, they teleported to the countryside, near Stonehenge. There was a group of wizards taking pictures of something, and when Harry got close, his eyes widened at the sight. It was a body, and it belonged to someone Harry knew; it was Wilkerson, Lucius’ supposed killer.
“Shit, it’s him!” Harry soon started to run.
Kingsley and Hermione soon did the same.
“How long has he been dead?” Harry questioned the forensics team.
“Thirty minutes at most,” the female doctor in charge of the forensics team told him with a cold tone.
“Fuck…I could’ve gotten to him somehow, now our only lead is gone!” Harry couldn’t believe it. “See?! There’s a relation, they knew we were close and yet, somehow, they managed to know we were after the only one who could’ve answered our questions, and now he’s dead…” Harry sighed.
However, these awoke new questions for Hermione and Kingsley; this situation couldn’t be ignored.
“You’re right, Harry,” Kingsley finally said.
Hermione gasped after hearing that.
“No, Kingsley, don’t do it!” Hermione tried to stop him.
“Silence, Granger, this is an order from the minister, your boss…Give Potter support in this case, I know this is a bet that could either lead us to putting an end to the substance problem or it could cause the downfall of our credibility, in any case, I’m willing to take the blame in case something goes wrong,” the minister said with a serious tone.
Both Harry and Hermione looked at him with surprised expressions.
“It’s not like I love my job anyway!” The minister chuckled, and Harry smirked.
“Kingsley…Why are you doing this? Harry’s reckless behavior needs to be controlled, not encouraged!” Hermione couldn’t believe what her boss just did.
Hermione loves Harry, but encouraging him will not make him moderate his attitude, he’s a loose a cannon, someone like him needs to be controlled, this is going to cause her more migraines than she was already gotten used to, now she felt like a hypocrite for wanting to get rid of that potion when she’s using the potion to ease migraine every day.
“Because he reminded me of me when I started in the Auror forces, I was a young man full of dreams who wanted to change the world, and then, the reality crushed me until it turned me into another lifeless drone whose only purpose is to serve the true leaders of this government,” the older wizard confessed with a disappointed tone.
He gained a pitying look from Hermione and Harry; it’s clear the man had some issues, but for now, they needed to focus on what was important.
“Also…I owe Amelia this; she saved me lots of times when we were partners in the Auror department, the least thing I can do is help her niece,” added the older wizard.
Hermione was shocked while Harry smirked.
