Chapter #20: Nostalgic skies.
Harry walked through the halls of the castle with an old broom on his hands, the model was very outdated but brooms aren’t cheap and he wasn’t in the best situation to spend lots of gold on a broom, but that was alright, Harry was confident enough about his flying abilities, a model like this was more than enough to achieve what he was planning to achieve this evening.
Students and staff were looking at him with bewildered expressions, but Harry didn’t pay them any mind. They were right to act like that, though, considering where he was heading, it was obvious he was about to do something he never showed interest in, and so, after a few minutes, he finally reached his destination: the Quidditch pitch. The place wasn’t empty; in fact, there were many people with brooms just like him, including the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
It was that time of the year for the Quidditch team to recruit new members. Harry doesn’t know what’s going to happen to Malfoy, Ron, and Henry because they’re currently serving their punishment for what they did on the train. From what he heard, it seems like today they were cleaning the kitchens manually.
So, there was a seeker position available because of Henry Potter’s situation. One would say that would be an out-of-character situation for Harry to want the position, considering he doesn’t want to catch people’s attention, but that would be wrong; he loves Quidditch, and he knows he’s going to get the attention of everyone once they see his skills.
But he doesn’t mind that kind of attention for one simple reason: being a good Quidditch player doesn’t make you look like an evil wizard; the attention received is a good type of attention. That wouldn't be the case if he were to show his true power. He knows that if he showed what he was made of when it came to magic, it would cause chaos in the world.
They would think he’ll destroy the world; hell, it could cause both the dark and light sides to join forces to destroy him, a very exaggerated approach, but wizards and witches were very emotional creatures; they rarely think with a cold head, and it makes sense as emotions fuel magic.
So, as long as he gets attention for positive stuff, he’s more than okay, who knows? Maybe this could be the ladder he needs to climb to reach his goal of becoming a professional Quidditch player, not because he loved the game but because he needed the money. Also, this was a good way to get his revenge on the people who had made his life a living hell, or at least he would get his revenge competitively.
“Good morning, everyone,” Ginny Weasley said.
Of course, she took Potter’s place. She then gave a speech about what was expected of them, the positions available, and most of all, giving them tips and that just because they might be a little good it doesn’t mean they were going to get picked up, their behavior outside the team was also taken into account something that surprised him considering the team wasn’t in the best position to filter recruits.
And so, after that speech, Ginny started to pair people depending on their positions. There were only two seekers, and aside from Harry, the other seeker was Seamus, who was looking at him like a monster ready to strike. Seamus was part of Potter’s group and one of Harry’s tormentors.
He saw that Seamus was full of confidence; however, for Harry, this was an opportunity to finally make him pay for everything he’d done to him. This was the first step; whoever gets picked on is going to act as a replacement. Once Henry’s punishment ends, he’s supposed to take his position back.
Or that’s the plan, but it won’t happen because Harry wasn’t planning to be a reserve player; he was going to take the main spot and relegate Potter to the bench, he was going to make sure to achieve that, he was sorry for their first rival because he was planning to destroy them on the pitch.
Harry watched all the recruits go and have their chance to show their abilities, then it was finally time for him and Seamus to compete. They were forced to share a handshake for sportsmanship, but Harry was able to tell how fake Seamus was acting with that arrogant smirk.
It seems like being friends with Henry has made him think that he’s just as good as him. Well, that’s just going to make the humiliation even sweeter. Soon, both he and Seamus were in the air, facing each other, which is why Ginny finally took the snitch in her hand.
“The snitch is enchanted not to leave the Quidditch pitch. I want to see your abilities, so the rules are easy: just catch it, and you’re on the team,” Ginny said casually.
It seems like she wasn’t losing her mind over the seeker position. Well, it makes sense. She was probably holding on to the hope that Henry would come and fix anything that the new seeker would do; she’ll be surprised the moment she realizes that won’t happen.
“At the count of three… THREE!” Ginny screamed as she let the small gold sphere go wild.
It didn’t take long for Seamus to start chasing after it. Harry, however, decided to ignore the flying object. He has faced and captured countless snitches throughout the years, and so, his investigations have led him to an interesting conclusion; it seems like the thing doesn’t like to be ignored.
On the other hand, if you chase it desperately, it's less likely that the thing will let you catch it, so he just stood in his position, he moved around his own position looking at Seamus going at it, turns out that his confidence was long gone, and he looked a bit worried, to be honest.
Harry continued focused on his strategy, Seamus was about to catch it but then the thing made fun of him and made a 90° turn and flew even faster, Seamus then started to chase it, the snitch on the other hand had other plans, soon, it was in front of Harry and it was moving like a fly trying to catch his attention.
Harry remained calm, he knew this was a trap, the worst mistake you can make is try to catch it right now, the people who made this game made a lot of things with the balls to make sure the game wouldn’t be too easy for some people, so, instead of trying to reach the thing with his hand, he decided that it was time to fly.
The chase had started, Harry knew what this was all about, it was a test, now he was going to put his flying skills at test because of the many things the snitch will put him through, the thing was making crazy turns and it was moving around the scoring poles, it would be easy for anyone to crash against those poles but not for Harry.
Seamus now was like a scavenger, he decided to follow Harry and then, he started to push him with his shoulder but Harry completely ignored him, he was completely focused on the snitch while Seamus was focused on hitting him, something that he would regret because soon, Harry intentionally led him to crash against a pole while he captured the snitch and descended gently back to Ginny who was smiling at his demonstration, it was obvious what was going on here, he was on the team.
