Chapter #4: Impostor syndrome
It’s been a week since the incident in the Greengrass manor, and Harry still couldn’t believe that just happened. The marriage had been called off, and even though it was a sudden change, everyone agreed, but Harry knew the truth: he influenced that outcome.
He doesn’t know when he’s going to stop using magic, but there’s one thing that's for certain: he’s happy he was able to use it for something useful. This world was still too backwards; he needed to fix things. People should marry because they want to, not because of a business deal.
“Harry… Come down, the results from the entrance exam arrived!” He heard his mother say.
After hearing those words, he was back to reality; there was nothing magic could do to help him in case he didn’t get a place in Hogwarts. He sighed and soon got dressed. He came downstairs ten minutes later. He was a bit worried; however, when he arrived, he saw an old female professor whom he recognized very well. It was Professor McGonagall, but she wasn’t alone; she came along with a bushy-haired girl around his age.
“Hermione!” Harry said with a grin as he ran to greet his best friend.
She smiled but looked at the professor, and she nodded at her, and soon they embraced; the scene would’ve been wholesome if it weren’t because there were other reasons why she was here.
“Hermione… What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be at Hogwarts continuing to do genius stuff and all that?” He asked with a raised brow.
She was nervous for a second, and then she smiled. The moment was too short, but he noticed that she wasn’t comfortable with something he said; however, he wasn’t going to question that for now.
Suddenly the older woman clarified her voice.
“Oh… Good morning,” Harry told the older woman.
“Professor McGonagall, that’s how you should refer to me; that’s, of course, if you still want to attend Hogwarts,” she said out of nowhere.
Harry couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“What?” He asked with a raised brow.
He didn’t know if he heard wrong, but his ears registered a strange fact about him getting a place at Hogwarts, the most important school in the country.
“Did I hear wrong, or did I…?” He asked, confused.
“Yes, Harry… You’re in; you’ve been accepted at Hogwarts, just like me,” Hermione said this time.
Now he was in shock because he didn’t know if he joined because of his magical influence or because he truly did well in the entrance exam; however, he wasn’t going to make himself look suspicious. He decided to take the win, and soon he jumped in joy just like a kid his age should be doing. Then Hermione hugged him, and so they started to jump around together as they were going to be together at school.
“I knew you could do it, I knew you had a lot of potential... You just didn’t like to show it around!” She said happily. “We’re leaving together this evening!” She declared, and Harry was surprised to hear those words.
Never in his life had he considered that he would go to Hogwarts, and for the first time in so long, his parents were now looking at him with happy expressions.
“I’m impressed, Mr. Potter… We have students like Hermione who get in because of their achievements, but then we have students who rarely appear, just like you… People with perfect scores,” McGonagall decided to break their moment.
Harry’s eyes widened after hearing that.
“Perfect score?” He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“Yes… You’ve got a perfect score. The last person to achieve that was your mother,” his mother smiled at him.
“I mean… You’re more impressive because you come from a poor family, Mother.” Harry didn’t want to look arrogant.
“I’m so proud of you, Harry. I knew you had the potential to achieve incredible things,” the redhead tried her hardest not to sob.
After that, his parents told him to pack while they caught up with Professor McGonagall, and Hermione decided to help him pack. When they arrived, Hermione surprised him because she suddenly started to sob, which caught him by surprise.
“I’m so sorry,” she said between tears.
“Hermione… Why are you crying?” He asked worriedly.
“I was so worried that you wouldn’t get it that… I tried to influence the professors and the council of the school to let you in,” she said as she tried to calm down.
“What? Why would you risk your career for that? There’s a good future ahead of you!” He said, shocked.
“Because I need you with me at school, Harry... Without you, it doesn't make sense for me to be there!” Her words caught him by surprise.
He was hoping this wouldn’t be a love declaration; he was too young to deal with these kinds of things.
“No, you don’t get it, Harry… I’m a fraud; that’s nothing without you,” she declared.
Now Harry was more confused than before.
“Please, be clear.” he needed more context.
“Because all the things I’ve invented, they were taken from you; I stole your ideas and turned them into my own creation,” she said, ashamed of herself. “Without you close to me, those achievements are going to stop… I need you with me, Harry.” Her words made him feel conflicted.
On one hand, she was right. He practically suggested a lot of ideas to her so they could pass as her achievements; that was one of his objectives in his pursuit to make this backwards society advance towards technology. He needed video games to be back as soon as possible; the video games in the year he died were incredible, and he missed that.
However, he had the concepts; he knew Hermione would do something with the concepts, which is why he just made suggestions like the concept of gravity. She managed to come up with that after he questioned why things fell on the ground and how long it takes for different objects with different sizes to fall from the same height.
The most recent suggestion he made was about electricity and why clothes suddenly generate small sparks. He was just waiting for her to announce the concept of electricity, then she did something that took him out of his thoughts; she raised her right index finger, and it suddenly lit up.
“What the…” Harry said, surprised.
“Yes… I have powers, Harry; it’s thanks to this that I come up with the crazy inventions based on your ideas,” she told him with a sad tone.
“You have magic?!” He asked with his eyes wide open.
“Magic?” She questioned.
Harry suddenly felt stupid. He had been trying to hide that knowledge, but now he revealed the truth to Hermione. Now that the mask was off, there was no point in hiding, and so, with a movement of his hand and a bit of willpower, he moved a pillow with his mind; she gasped at the sight.
“Harry… You too,” she couldn’t believe it.
“Yes, Hermione… This is called magic. I don’t know how to control it, and I don’t know what to do with it, but… It has helped me up to this point in my life, and now that I know I’m going to be with you at Hogwarts… What do you think about collaborating to investigate magic?” He offered.
She could only nod with a huge grin on her face.
