The blues scale. It is very interesting how we can take the minor pentatonic, add just one note, the flat 5th interval, and it changes everything. Even more interesting because the flat 5th is just a passing tone, meaning it is just meant to play passing onto another note, and in doing so it transforms the steady and faithful minor pentatonic into something much more... bluesy! In this tutorial we are going to look at how to transform the scale into something different, 5 different licks that are each different and how to use the blues scale in a blues context as each of these licks are going to be used as fills and played with strumming as well.

Hi Tyler! Could you answer some beginner questions - i.e. how would you explain to a beginner..?... what is flat fifth interval, what do you mean "shapes" on scale??, "how to use the blues scale......" "going to be used as fill" .... Maybe I am just not understanding your lingo but I do have some music theory and I usually catch on fairly quickly. thanks much!

These are all GREAT questions. 1. An interval is how you measure the distance between two notes, the same way we use feet and meters to measure the distance between two objects. A flat 5th is equal to 6 frets. This link is a tutorial we did breaking down all of the intervals and how they are used to create chords and scales. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fab90AjfYzc&t=309s 2. Shapes, scales create a pattern, and these patterns are referred to as shapes. When you learn to create the pattern you can learn to move that pattern, meaning when you learn the scale Am and you know how to move the pattern you can transform Am to Bm by moving the pattern up the fretboard two frets. This lesson examines all 5 pentatonic shapes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBURg0RYij4 and this one shows you how to move them https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ehtXuK9dY8&t=360s 3. "How to use the blues scale" is just showing you how to use it to make it more musical. The ideas we did here are in the key of E, so you can mix them with a blues in E. 4. "going to be used as a fill" That means the lick is not intended be used in a full blown solo, but rather a fill. The reason they are called fills is because they literally fill up empty space, empty implying the singer is not singing. So in a blues song the singer usually sings for two measures and has two measures of just strumming, this empty space is a great place to play a "fill" and fill up the empty harmonic space with a lick, created from the blues scale. I know these questions will create more questions, but they are great questions and I am happy to answer. Would it bother you if I used these questions to create a post? Thanks!
