please watch 5 immediately! things are just ramping up

Also just for a little perspective on the ending there - Ilya definitely knows he wants Shane at this point, that's why the whole 'stay and tuna melt' thing happened. Ilya was doing his best to communicate that he wanted Shane. But our poor boy Shane is just so bad at picking up on social queues like that - flash forward to saying their first names and it becomes too real for Shane and he's so terrified of getting hurt more (especially after Vegas) that he just goes into full panic.

So when roses gay best friend goes to the bar and waves at Ilya. Ilya knows that’s roses bestie so he already knows she’s there and he is looking for shane, since they have been spotted together lately. When shane is looking around he spots Ilyas teammate talking to the group of girls so he knows Ilya is there so that’s when he excuses himself to the bathroom and then that’s when he sees Ilya dancing with the girl. He’s not dancing with the girl to get back at shane but its a jester that he can also try to move on from Shane just like Shane is trying to move on from Ilya.

hotguyalex

ohhhhhhh okay i could not figure out what he was looking at in that scene thank you for explaining it to me!

hearing folks on Reddit trying to explain frotting to the straights has been priceless

I think Shane’s autism is a part of what happens during the tuna melt day. Shane has been trained by Ilya to only expect what he’s always gotten: Ilya being unavailable, transactional, detached, acting unaffected - consistently and reliably - for years. Then this day: Perfect Boyfriend Ilya: he’s cuddling, snuggly, begging him to stay, making him food - I think Shane is genuinely bewildered and confused.

jo

Hudson said that Jacob (director) told him, “that tuna melt *scares* you” - the domesticity and care is unexpected. So that last bit on the couch where Shane takes charge and initiates this very intimate hook up and they say each other’s names - it’s the final straw. I think Shane at this point is desperate to see if there’s any way to avoid accepting he’s gay, and he’s in love with Ilya, and thinks (incorrectly) that Ilya doesn’t feel the same way.

You: Is he going to sleep with her?? Me to the TV: yup! You: are they in the same club?? Me: Yup! lol so fun to watch along, and I love that you enjoyed the magic of the club scene - it is pure art!!

hotguyalex

You probably learned this later on. But that song at the end was actually one of the earliest cases of mainstream queer baiting. The original version (the one at the beginning of the club scene) was sung by t.A.T.u., a duo that was presented as a real lesbian couple. At the time, that was huge. The song was openly about queer desire, which was almost unheard of in pop music back then. It blew up internationally, and for a lot of people, it felt like the first time something so clearly queer was right there, in plain sight, on the radio. And then… yeah. Turns out it was all fake. They weren’t actually a couple. And the two singers later said they were straight. It was a whole marketing move, built to shock people and sell records. What many queer listeners had experienced as a rare moment of recognition turned out to be a marketing strategy. It didn’t erase the impact the song had, nor the feelings it sparked. But it did leave behind a bitter aftertaste. I love the Harrison version though, the one at the end (with a male voice).

hotguyalex

omg thats right i remember seeing them sing this song on stage and it was two girls right!? i feel like this song choice worked perfectly and it literally fit the video beyond anything i could say.

The look on your face in the club scene says it all man. Pretty sure I just stared at the screen making wheezing noises the whole time 💀. I *know* I squealed when the credits hit

hotguyalex

i literally get full body goosebumps every single time i watch that scene to this day!

Sandro Munoz

Thank you. This is one of the best explanations of that whole scene. Honestly, it's a very confusing scene where you really have to put 2 and 2 together to understand what's actually going on.

jaimie✨

the club scene is probably my favourite of the whole show besides ilya’s russian monologue. the lyrics to the song completely explaining their feelings. them thinking of each other the whole time, ilya going home alone, shane trying to be with a girl. i cannnnttttt

hotguyalex

everytime i watch it sister, whether that be to edit a reel or whatever i get literal goosebumps

jaimie✨

it’s a cinematic masterpiece, one of the best scenes i’ve ever seen on a show!!

I get really tired of people blaming every time that Shane is remotely insensitive on his autism. Ilya gets full blame for his, but Shane does not and it is sort of infantlilzing and weird to me. I understand he doesn’t pick up every cue, but my frustration with him in ep 4 of HR, and I understand it had to happen for their growth and his confrontation of the closet, but after the club scene where everyone calls Ilya toxic for trying to survive the night, Ilya goes home alone.

Marisa Jo Miller-McDowell

Ilya goes home alone and spends the night thinking about Shane and doomscrolling into the morning and Shane goes home with another person that he doesn’t have feelings for but who is more acceptable, read: a woman. Yeah that isn’t his autism. It’s the closet. And that closet isn’t a character flaw. It doesn’t make him bad. We have most of us queer people battled with it, but it’s the closet not his neurodivergence. and the closet is fucking toxic.

Marisa Jo Miller-McDowell

Sometimes I torture myself thinking about the 24 to 48 hours after Shane walks out from tuna melt gate, and what Ilya must be torturing himself with like “why did I fucking ask him to stay?”, “why did I call him by his name?,” “why did I make food?,” “why did I say that thing about Svetlana?”, like “why did I fuck this up after eight fucking years by trying to make it a little more?” I just imagine him saying the most awful stuff to himself, and I don’t know why I do that to myself.
