Nervous to post this hahaha. A very slow start to Half Life 2, enjoy the rambles and everyone's unnecessary focus on Gordon's ass. Happy new year y'all! Thank you for the patience and support! Got lots to do but I am fitting in the game now!

You didn't miss anything major from the spinoffs, and you're basically dead on about the storytelling method. Glad to see you're enjoying this so far, and appreciating the visuals as well - this game was mind blowing as far as graphics went when it was released (especially the facial animations) and still holds up really well twenty years later.

Amber, since you were confused about the use of the word "combine" (COMB-ine, not com-BINE as in combination) without context, I wanted to help clarify. I believe that the name is intended to make the player think about the commercial farming equipment known as Combine Harvesters (eg: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combine_harvester). You can make your own conclusions about what a force named Combine is doing meddling in the "breeding" process of humans under their "protection."

Also, visually I think you are playing the 20th anniversary update that released in 2024. They "remastered" it a bit, I think mostly to make sure it was playable on modern hardware, and NVIDIA has been helping add RTX to old games (like Quake RTX). The water and physics were super impressive in 2004, but not quite as nice as they look in the 2024 version on modern hardware. This was a fun first episode, with a healthy amount of panicked throwing and bashing of objects, whilst taking care to appreciate the cool environment design and piecing together the story. This is gonna be another wild playthrough, and I'm excited to see what happens! The way the last game literally went sideways at the end was glorious. Thank you and happy new year! SO PUMPED. This game is incredible. I'm still playing it 20 years later. ETA: Watched it! I don't mind the slow pace at all. In fact, I'm here for it. Milk this thing as long as you can; there is _so much_ to this story. I've played the game so much I just breeze through the beginning. Seeing it at a pace closer to what the devs intended, noticing details I hadn't before (like the distant echoes of children playing in the playground), is priceless. You simultaneously have a beautiful, innocent wide-eyed wonder about every new game world, but you're also incredibly clever, amazingly skilled, and pick up on hints and lore I would never find on my own.

This is starting off SO GOOD. Can't wait for more episodes! Oh, have you played the Portal games by the way? If not they are excellent for a blind Let's Play, have a nice community and follows a HL2 playthrough very well.

One of the best parts of Horizon Zero Dawn was watching Aloy’s hip sway if you had her walk very slow. There’s a few videos on YouTube - it’s amazing how the developers and/or motion capture people nailed it. It’s probably sexist, but if I’m going to put a few hundred hours into a game I’d rather be watching a female character’s behind than a male. I’m looking at you Assassins Creed Odyssey…
