Hello Bluebells 🌷
Popping into your inbox to share a new drawing with you and a downloadable project pack for to go with it!
I used the prompt 'a happy dandelion' from my free daily prompt community The Quiet Artist Club to inspire these two besties 💖
You can download all of the assets for this illustration below, and either use them as a tool to see how I construct my art, or use them as a kit to recreate this artwork on your own. Just keep in mind that any recreations can be for personal use only.
You'll find in this post:
A timelapse video of the art process (above)
A simple breakdown of the process in images (below)
A working digital file with named layers (attached)
A colour palette as a .jpg and .swatches file (attached)
The original sketch as a .png (attached)
I liked the idea of two dandelions rather than just one, and I thought it would be fun if one of them had just popped into their seeding stage where they go all white and fluffy!
You'll see in the timelapse above that I played around with a few different ways to show the fluffiness, but in the end I felt like the simple option fit my style best.
I think they turned out cute, and I really like that I decided to use a dark background for this one to help them stand out. What do you think? Do they look enough like dandelions to you, or did I stylise them too much?
So here are the main steps of my process (roughly in the right order) broken down into images.
First, I drew a sketch:
Then I coloured in all of the main elements, using the sketch as a reference:
Then I added some details:
And finally some texture on everything (including the background):
This was quite a simple illustration - you'll be able to see how the layers are broken down in the .psd file below - there are really just a handful of layers for the base colours and then clipping mask layers attached to them for texture and details.
These are the brushes I used (from my brush packs):
Soft Canvas Pencil - for colouring the base shapes and drawing the details
Textured Pencil (regular version and light version) - for adding texture to everything
And here is the colour palette (also attached below):
Enjoy!
