Hello everyone,

I've just finished drawing the challenge for this month's Creative Illustration Curriculum, and you can watch my quiet, real-time art process in the video above 💖 Beautiful Bluebells will be getting a version with voice-over soon where I talk about my process as I go.

The learning focus this month is exploring different ways to create a focal point in a landscape scene.

I set the challenge this month to be: draw a simple landscape scene with a clear focal point.

I drew my composition in pencil in my sketchbook using the rule of thirds to help me place my focal point (the little cottage) in a good spot. I didn't draw my thirds very evenly though so the house is probably a little high! Oops, nevermind, it doesn't need to be perfect.

I also drew some of the lines of my landscape converging at the house to help draw the eye there, so the hills, footpath and smoke all lead our eyes back to the house.

The last technique I used to draw attention to the house was to use contrast when I coloured it in, so I used a warm orange for the roof to contrast against the cool colours of the rest of the illustration.

What do you look at first in this scene? Is your eye drawn to the cottage first like I intended?

So here's what I'm learning about focal points this month:

There are lots of ways you can create a focal point! Play around with them, see which ones are easiest for you, and don't worry if it isn't perfect.

You don't need to use every technique to draw attention to your focal point, but the more techniques you combine together the clearer it will be.

Just because you have a focal point doesn't mean that the rest of the artwork doesn't matter. It's just a nice starting point for the viewer to look at first.

I really enjoyed drawing in my sketchbook for this one! Don't forget to download this month's curriculum pdf guide if you'd like to join in at home.
