Hello my beautiful flowers!

Since this month’s illustration club has been all about a cozy home, it got me thinking that I should share some steps and ideas for how you can draw a cute house! I draw houses like these all the time and I think they’re so cute and easy to customise.

I’ll show you the steps to making a super simple house, and then I’ll give you some ideas for how you can alter that to customise your own buildings.

How To Draw A Basic House:

First we can start with a basic square or rectangle.

Then we’ll add our roof by drawing a shorter rectangle at the top of the house with the bottom two corners spread out (which I guess makes it a trapezoid). Let’s also add a tiny rectangle on top of everything else and over to one side to act as our chimney.

Now we can add a door. For this house I’ve drawn an arch shaped door and put it in the bottom left of our house. I also drew a little circle for a door handle.

Next, let’s draw two rectangles for windows to the right of the door, and add a vertical and horizontal line to the centre of each one.

For details, we can draw some horizontal lines for the roof, add some curtains in the windows and a cute little circle window on the front door.

Finally I think it’s fun to draw a little garden! I like to add a few bumpy bushes in front of the house and a couple coming from the edges of the house (so they look like they’re behind the house).

And that’s it!

Now that we know how to draw a basic house, the fun part is to customise it!

Here are some things you can think about changing to customise your house:

The shapes of windows

The shape of the door

The height of the house

The width of the house

The type of roof

Garden details

Plants/ivy growing up the house

The layout of the doors and windows

The type of chimney

Maybe there’s a porch

Maybe there’s an attic window

What material the building is made of (wood, bricks, stone etc)

Adjusting these things gives you so many possibilities to make unique cute houses.

So here are a few ideas for different doors and windows to get you started and a few examples of how you could mix & match different elements to make fun buildings.

I hope you have fun illustrating and customising your own cute houses like I have with these ones! You can make them short and simple, or tall and grand, or even little shops like bakeries (florists are also very sweet to draw) 😍🍰

I've attached below the images I used for this tutorial so that you can download them if you like. I hope you are doing well today, enjoy! ❤

Hi Mimi, is it possible to have these how to's as a pdf worksheet? I dont always have the time to do them that month and i would like to start a folder and print them off and put them in it. :) when i click download it just downloads a url to this page..

Hi Julie, totally understand! Did you receive an email of this post, because if so you can access it anytime and you should also be able to 'print' the email which normally gives you the option to save as a pdf. Let me know if that doesn't work and we'll find another solution 🥰

Hi, thanks, it doesn't seem to give me the option to do that. Not sure why. But i am using iphone not computer. I can print the jpeg at the bottom but not the description detailing everything. That's why i thought it might be easier if the actual email how to is also a pdf . I do find patreon really complicated though so maybe i am missing the obvious!

Patreon is definitely a bit awkward sometimes! I don't think there's a way to download the text directly from Patreon, just from email. I was hoping to not make pdfs because it takes quite a bit of time to lay them out and make them look nice because each step-by-step tutorial is a bit different. I'll see if I can find a simpler way to convert to pdf 😊
