How To Make A Drawing Prompt List (Patreon)

I recently made a Creativity Workbook with 10 drawing activities, and thought I would share one of those activities with you here because I think it's so fun (and handy) to have your own prompt list for drawing ideas!
So today we’re going to set you up with an easy way to conjure up drawing ideas anytime by making your own prompt list that you can pull from when you’re not sure what to draw.
It’s really simple to make a prompt list. First we need a few categories, and then we need to brainstorm some ideas for each of those categories.
You can change these categories to suit you better if you like, or you could even change how many there are, but I find that these are a good place to start.
Under each heading, brainstorm 5-10 ideas of things that you would like to draw for that category (you can write more if you like).
Once you have a little list under each category, you have a prompt list! When you’re ready to draw, simply choose one prompt from each category and see if you can draw something that includes those three ideas.
Sometimes the pressure of sitting in front of an empty sketchbook can make our minds go blank, so sitting and writing down ideas ahead of time takes the guesswork out and now you have a lovely list of drawing ideas to pull from whenever you’re ready.
Choosing a word randomly from each category will make things more challenging if you’re up for it!
The great thing about creating your own prompt list is that you can fill it with things that you want to draw. It’s ok to make it easy, because you can always add more options to the categories when you’re ready for more of a challenge.
Personally I prefer drawing animals to humans, so I mostly put animals in my character list. I fill my environments with nature scenes, and for accessories I write ideas that would be cute to add to a small animal character because that’s what I like to draw.
You can customise your lists as much as you want. If you don’t really want to draw characters but would rather draw lots of interesting landscapes, then maybe you don’t use a character list at all and instead have your categories set up differently.
Let me know if you make your own prompt list!
