Everything Everywhere All At Once Mini-Review (Patreon)
Content
Saw this with some work friends after an emotional day (good emotional), which was probably the best way to watch it. It's dazzlingly made, of course. Brilliant filmmaking with terrific editing and top notch action that made me forgive the Russo Brothers' producer credit.
Still, I could do without yet another "Motherly Love Will Always Come Through" story. Like my father discussed on Twitter, the angle of "a mother will always love her queer daughter because of the archetypes of mothers and daughters" hurts a lot when you're the disowned queer former daughter of an abusive mother. But it's the only angle we ever get to see.
I watched Everything Everywhere All At Once with a couple people who have immigrant parents, and they pointed out that angle is important. It very much is, but the endpoint of all-encompassing motherly love is stuck in the same paradigm that produces maternal abuse. Would love a take on a child being tortured to insanity by her mother that, I don't know, picks the child's perspective there.
