CW: racism, mass shootings, SA, domestic violence
Piece on the Woodland Realm should be up by tomorrow at the latest. I've had a busy week between starting my reporting internship and attending a friend's PhD defense, so no books to talk about this week. Let's jump right into the headlines:
After the white supremacist massacre at Tops in Buffalo, city residents are addressing race, poverty, and education in the city. Having lived in Upstate New York for a few years, and knowing multiple people who've worked for Tops, this one hit home for me.
Andrew Cuomo's state is set to pass the Adult Survivors Act, which extends the statute of limitations on abuse lawsuits by survivors 18 years or older.
I hate having to think about Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, but this article by Salon's Amanda Marcotte unpacking how the defamation lawsuit plays into the far-right patriarchal project is important reading.
Investigative journalist Michael Hobbes is also giving important analysis of this sham trial.
Nassau County is waging war against sellers of THC products.
ProPublica reports that Mississippi's attack on abortion rights is consistent with its 60-day Medicare coverage for post-childbirth care.
In addition to this story, ProPublica has this week's best opening sentence with "the fish were on their way to be executed."
NASA has found mutant sharks that swim in lava-tinted water and I'm ready to leave this planet.
Biden's plan to forgive student loan debt up to $10,000 for Americans who earn under $150,000 is flawed as hell and may never come to fruition, but it would save me from paying the government $7000, so I'd take it.
I'll be writing about New York's redistricting debacle for Shades of Long Island this week, so I don't want to go into it too much here, but these articles from The Nation and The New Yorker summarize it well.
Every account from Ulvade is utterly devastating, and may it teach us that we keep us safe. The police never will.
The Wagner Group continues to evade sanctions.
