I really like this episode. The whole idea of "going postal" was definitely in the air around this time. I think sometimes the electronics were subliminally prompting people to kill, but sometimes they were pure hallucinations. But in typical X-Files fashion, we're never sure exactly which is which. Love that Mulder and Scully still find ways to work together even though they've officially been reassigned away from each other.

There are various interpretations of this ending, and about the episode in general. My personal idea about the final message is that Mulder's fear -- the whole thing being a government experiment -- manifested itself through that message. He is basically seeing what he fears, that "they" were somehow sending these messages, thus he sees that text on his phone confirming his fear. :)

The clock tower shooter idea was based on the incident in 1966 at the University of Texas in Austin. A Marine Corps veteran went on a shooting rampage that left 15 people dead.
