Annie Bonz

I never watched this, but it was one of my sisters favorite movies. I could never bring myself to watch it. But I'm gonna watch it with y'all! I figure if I get emotional I at least got Asia's smile and BJ's laugh to help me out!

Davey11

The VIP's have been on fire recently. This film is pure art

Davey11

If you enjoyed this movie, I recommend watching Being John Malkovich and Adaptation which are also written by Charlie Kaufman whose a genius screenplay writer

Jeffrey Miller

Ok, I've seen this movie at least five times now, but I'm still having trouble trying to explain the timeline. The start of the movie and end of the movie are both after Joel waking up from his procedure to erase Clem. Something that helps is Clem's hair. Her hair is green when they first meet at the beach party. When he first asks her out at the book store it's newly dyed red. You can see her hair fade and her roots become more visible as their two year relationship goes on. After her and Joel break up her hair is newly dyed blue. Naomi is Joel's girlfriend before Clem. In the movie we never see her and their relationship is ambiguous. Deleted scenes expand on this and honestly change how we perceive Joel in a huge way. Patrick is using the stuff discarded after Clem's procedure and later Joel's procedure to manipulate Clem into falling in love with him. During the procedure we see how their relationship fell apart and they both ended up resenting each other. Joel realizes that he would rather have the good and bad memories of Clem instead of nothing. His subconscious projection of Clem tries to help him hide her in memories where she doesn't belong. This fails, but Clem is able to tell Joel to see her in Montauk. So the movies comes back to where it started. The morning after Joel's procedure. He doesn't remember Clem wrecking his car and doesn't understand why there are no entries in his journal for the last two years. Joel and Clem get back together for what they think is the first time. Then they both get the tapes of them talking about why they want to erase the other from their memories. They hear things that they would never imagine thinking about the other at the start of their relationship. Joel and Clem get back together again despite knowing how they'll probably feel about each other given enough time. The ending of them running in the snow that gets looped hints at they will have to do the whole thing over again after the end of the movie.

JennaB

Great choice! I read a while back that one of the ending options they did not use was Clem being at the doctor's office when she's much older, erasing Joel yet again. It shows they kept coming back together but breaking up over and over.

Mary Merry Berry

I've always loved this movie. It makes you really think. At the time that I first saw it, I had just gone through a bad break up and I wished I could just erase it and forget it too, but this movie made me realize that erasing all the bad means you erase all the good and some of those memories were worth keeping. It's one of those movies that you still keep thinking about long after you've seen it. Thanks for posting this one! I love Kate Winslet in this role - she is so weird and quirky and damaged, and Jim Carrey was the total opposite of the type of roles he usually plays.

Samira Abdulmalik

I know you guys were confused. The guy that stole her panties fell in love with Clementine when she was erasing Jim Carey's character out of her brain. So after he was erased from her mind he took all the good things that she said about Joel and used that so he could start dating her himself. The reason why they both ended up at Montauk is they were both drawn there because that was the last time that they individually remember being happy. At the end of the movie they were trying to decide if they were going to try again even though it ended badly the first time. As far as Kirsten Dunst character was there to show that even though memories can be erased the feelings never go away. Her memories had been erased but she still loved him in her core. She had her memories erased so she thought it was a crush and one sided so when his wife showed up she was saying tell the girl she's not crazy and that she had her memory erased

Davey11

Watching Asia trying to figure out the plot is hilarious even after BJ is explaining it perfectly 😂

asiaandbj

Ooh!! Omg!! That just made so much of my questions makes sense!! I was trying to figure it all out but this makes perfect sense! So glad you explained!! ☺️

JennaB

There's some deleted scenes that are worth a watch. One in particular I wish they left in: Mary listening to her tape reveals the Doc basically manipulated her into an abortion and it was one of the memories wiped. I believe that's the catalyst that led to her decision to give everyone their file back.

Ms Vanillabean

This was my first time seeing this movie. I thought the ending was beautiful. They realized that relationships aren’t perfect, and that that’s OK. In the end even though they heard all the things on the tapes that they didn’t like about each other, they still wanted to try again. I thought Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet were fantastic. Thanks for the reaction!

Bmac Tattoo

Great reaction to a movie that makes you think...wtf happened!? If you want to watch a TV series to make you think and wonder wtf.... watch LOST!

Ms Vanillabean

@wayneppanic- You don’t have the right to be so ugly and immature just because your mom paid for a month or even a year of Patreon.

Adam

ASIA AND BJ PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU READ THIS YOU MUST. 4 words whisperer and barely heard give away the ending and only Guandry would put the whole movie on a barely heard line but he did. Michele Guandry is a French revolutionary director. There are only practical effects, none digital except for the falling car. The rest are trap doors and flags and screens to make things look like they are disappearing. I haven’t read the comments but since this was the last one, you seem to be the most correct but you are incorrect. I will break it down. The movie is not non-linear but for the beginning. The beginning of the movie is actually the “book-end” of the movie and then when it goes to the front roll credits we are on a linear path and the rest are memories happening in real time. It’s hard to grasp this so forget it for a moment. I wrote my literature thesis on this movie and it’s by far my favorite. I studied it. It is a masterpiece. I will correct a couple other things but you got to wear I was Samira after watching more than 5-7x (I’ve now seen it over 20) and still catch stuff. At the end of when they know they are erasing each other which is happening in real time but through reality/dreams and memory… the only non linear thing is then beginning of the movie when he cries during the credits listening to what she says about him and then he goes to her and says “well what now?”, “fuck it he says” which is the secret to relationships. Love does really concur all in reality. I’m one of those straight romantics. HOWEVER, one time I was watching the movie and the last thing she whispers to him before the final erase is “Meet me at Mauntauk”. It doesn’t help that I grew up on montauk near the Hamptons of New York. I grew up in Suffolk and there is nothing like Montauk with snow. So she, being the smart romantic one does the only thing she can think, plan on his conscious and she says “meet me at mantauk” and in that moment I literally balled because I finally got every bit of the movie. At the beginning he wakes up from his wipe. Asia was so proud at the beginning when you said “they both woke up feeling inpulsed and groggy” and I thought you were gonna get it on first viewing which nobody does. If there is a question anyone has about this movie, I’m your guy lol. I studied it. I was infatuated with it. I’m a filmmaker and I was humbled. I knew I would never write something so good. It’s still my favorite. Better than any other movie. I have a poster of them on the ice with “I’ll meet you at Mauntauk” spelled correctly framed in gold. It’s barely audible but turn on the CC and it will tell you. More interesting facts to come. H

Adam

Dead on Julie. The “screw it” gives me chills.

Adam

It’s funny because BJ is smart as heck but acts like the dumb one. Not gonna lie, years ago I used to watch for Asia, I was in love with her but now I’m team Bj lol

Adam

I worked on lost. It is NOTHING and insulting to compare their “complex” story lines. This never misses a track. I’ll tell you because I don’t care. By season 3 of Lost, we were picking story lines to get back on by a jar. I swear it to god.

Adam

Watch this til 2:20 Joel says “I love you” as if it’s the last time they will see each other which is hours before Joel wakes up and she says and it’s mystical and beautiful “meet me in Mauntauk” setting up the dreamy state for them to re meet again in Montauk. https://youtu.be/Sy7YnrVXudg?si=x6chKadSHXRpOaIV Here, I’ll let you guys figure this one out. When was the actual first time they met? There is one and we see it.

Adam

You’ll be emotional by the opening credits. I am in love with my girlfriend. I would love to watch it with you over Plex server or just phone. We don’t need to speak. It makes me vicariously enjoy it through another’s eyes. If someone wants to male or female (I’m a straight dude though), I’m down. I would suggest if you like this movie, you should watch Spike Jones and Joaquin Phoenix “her.”

Adam

Prediction? Paaaaiiinnn! Hell yeah

CALIXYUKON

Uggg I can’t believe you did this awful movie! Jim Carrey is so bad. April fools! Love this movie haha good choice whoever made it!

Matt

idk if im going crazy or blind but it feels like yalls camera been out of focus for monthes.

Darth Brooks

Great reaction it's definitely a mind bender and others have already explained some of the strings y'all didn't connect. I'd say check out The Number 23 with Jim Carrey. It's a great psychological thriller and one of his more serious roles as well. Love the reaction✌❤ fam!

Jesse

Hell Yeah!!! Bring on Drogo yo….uh wait…..that’s Thrones. Sorry. Bring on Drago ya. 👍 🥊

Jesse

Thanks👍

asiaandbj

Adam!! lol!! Take that back! 😆 I’m kidding.. glad you’re here regardless! ♥️☺️ ~Asia

Jesse Wilson

This is one of my favorite movies and definitely my favorite Jim Carrey in a serious role. Lots of people have explained the ins and outs of Joel's experience so I won't go into that except to say that as Joel is losing his memories of clementine he realizes that despite the negatives he's still in love with her and his subconscious tries to preserve anything he can hide. When he wakes up and has the overwhelming urge to go to Montauk it's because he fought to retain those feelings and whatever memory he could. The fact that clementine is also there means we can infer that she likely had a very similar experience to Joel while she was having her memory erased. When they find each other again and realize what happened and then are able to accept each other while knowing all the faults and the ugly details up front is such a beautiful idea. Definitely a movie you have to be willing to connect with emotionally to really get everything out of it. Love the reactions always guys.

Coolio

If you ever been in love and experienced heartbreak, this movie hits different lol One of Jim Carrey's best movies imo.

JennaB

"Get back on by a jar" huh?

Bmac Tattoo

It seems English isn't his native language. No idea what he meant but he shouldn't bring negative vibes here. Weird lol

Russ D

Love this movie-Memento is another great movie centered on Memory Loss that will have you trying to figure it out for hours afterwards. More of a thriller but when you guys watch movies that you have to discuss and figure out afterwards!!

Mami's Gatos

Nooo. They had eachother erased from each others memories. Elijah wood "fell in love" with clementine when they were doing rhe procedure on her and atolesone personal thi ga to get her to fall in love with him. Patrick was a creep that's why mart couldn't stand him lol. There were things that reminded rhwm of each other like the scraped car. Joel's neighbor who remembered her and k ew nothing of rhe procedure. Clementine had her memory erased first. Joel is the one who kept trying g to hide her in other memories in his past before he met her to try and save the memory of her cos it wasn't till he went under he didn't wanna erase her. I think the moral of the film is its better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. I think rhey net on valentines day too 💝

Adam

Wow Asia. I love this movie and watched it over 7-8x before I ever heard the “Meet me in Montauk” line. Good going. It helps to know that the whole movie only had one jump. It starts at the end and then meets itself (called a bookend) and then we got a few more hours into the day. We ONLY see the relationship through the erasing of the memories. They met the first time at the beach at their mutual friends party outside. They do say “the first time we met was..” on that scene but they snuck it in. Then in the memory they go farther at the end because the chronology of the memory was backwards. It starts with the last time they were together, the fight where he says “I assume you did” and then when he finds out she erased him, he does it but even when we know that it’s in the memory. So the last thing is this time he went back inside and she says “meet me at…” and like a dream they both remember because they love each other and do go. Movie plays with faith and all. He almost misses the door to the train that they see each other on. Who goes to the beach in NY on a snowy cold day? As for Patrick, “Baby Boy”, he’s just there for the erasure of her mind and falls in love with her while she’s out cold, steals panties and calls her, she goes crazy, she doesn’t know why and calls him but it feels all wrong. Nothing more to it than that. The entirety of their relationship happens over a couple hours with Patrick. The entire movie takes place in less than an actual day. Probably about 13-16 hours. It starts with the few hours they re meet. It then shows the whole nights process (on a small occasion coming out of his mind to show the apartment work) and so add the time when he wakes up and goes to Mauntauk and don’t add the time we already saw and jumped back then we add the time from tooth brush on. The ending might seem non climatic but it’s beautiful. Joel, the hero of the story, says so this is love, and “Ok” and that’s what they needed to say to each other. Love ain’t perfect or you’ll break up. True for every person. Told in the particular story better than any I’ve seen. Mwah. Somehow I just never heard that last line. Amazing I didn’t but chills the first time I heard it and every time since.

Adam

Actually he fell in love with her when they were doing him. Sorry for posting so much here but I was posting while watching. Act like I know so much but like I said I didn’t get most of it first time. lol! 😂

Adam

Beautiful and agree but “How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each pray’r accepted, and each wish resign’d.” Depends how you take the poem. I like the idea of “better to of loved” but this poem can go either way and this is the poem the movie was named after right? So if eternal sunshine of the spotless mind would mean it’s a good thing to never forget because although happy is achievable by a forgetful mind is it worth the happiness if your prayers and wishes are resigned? It’s discussable. So are some of her other poems. In the end she decides to giving everyone their minds back by tape if anything. I have wondered the same. I have memories id erase if I could.

Adam

Man I can’t shut up. That movie is a cool non linear movie. That’s not what this is. That is just a movie during the Pulp Fiction era that I loved mind you (Momento) and of course PF but PF was good outside of the non linear format. Want to watch a horrible movie, watch momento linear. The DVD BluRay version has a linear version is sooo boring. But the non linear nature is what played with the memory. ESOSM however was nearly completely linear. it started at the end and then from the crying credit roll on, purely linear. it was all in 16 hours of a day. We just dont know that until the end (of the 5th tine you watch it) lol. Momento is amazing tho. co-signed.

Adam

I speak English perfectly actually. Type fast. I am bringing negative vibes? I worked on the series Lost for 4 years on Oahu. The story lines got so tangled that there was a jar with story line paths. Head writers and EPs would literally at some points after season 3 and well into the later seasons were picking story lines to work on by picking them out of a literal jar with things written on them. Sorry if I’m being misunderstood but I’m certainly not trying to upset you so chill.

Adam

There is a reason they cut that. Guandry wanted the decision to that she did it to be completely altruistic (for the benefit of all). An abortion hits so many chords that it makes it almost a possible vendetta. Go look at that conversation we had about the poem and how it applies. Less so if it’s about her feelings about the memory and not something like abortion but I agree, it’s a major decision to have pulled that. Think the choice was right.

Karim

So not only do they erase your memory, they tear your house up too 😒

Dan Gershgol

This was a great movie. First time watching. I hope you get to The Majestic. My favorite Jim Carrey movie. A more serious movie.

Bonnie Smith

Oh gosh.. I'm not sure if I'm emotionally ready to watch this one again LOL I love it so much.

Bonnie Smith

Okay. I'm watching it now.. I had teaaars in my eyes from laughing at the reaction of you see him trying to turn the guy around in the library. hahaha The pause and look on both of your faces, and then looking at each other like "you saw that too right?"

Hei$enberg

100% a movie I would recommend rewatching. I was going to explain it but I saw other already did a good job. Rewatching it will make it make so much more sense and make the movie even better.

Raider Ron

So the very first time Joel met Clementine was at the Beach and the 2nd time was Montauk after they had there memories erased.

Dan Gonya

I think y'all watched too many movies with crazy twists in it, cuz I was watching Asia trying to crack a code that wasn't there. Elijah Wood was just a skeevy dude that stole Clem's underwear and used all of Joel's stuff to try and get into Clem's pants. BJ's got it figured it out.

Dan Gonya

Naomi was his fiance was from 2 years ago, that he left for Clem. Kirsten Dunst fell in love and had an affair with the doctor, and then had it erased, but fell in love with him all over again. The theme of the movie is basically we are who we are, and will repeat our actions, regardless. We will end up with the people we were meant to be with.

Mom’s Account

This is the type of movie that needs a rewatch to fully appreciate how beautiful this film is

Saraka Smith

In the uncut version, Kristen Dunst’s character gets pregnant by that doctor while theyre having an affair. She gets really upset when he tells her that she needs to get an abortion because he’s married. That sent her over the edge because she ends up getting the abortion and is so mad, she has her memories of him erased.

Annie Bonz

I wish I had caught this comment last year! Thank was sweet.

Abel Salas Jr

1 of my favorite Jim Carey and romantic films. They decided to go ahead and have the relationship again, even though they know how it will end up. Because they'd rather have the memories of the relationship than not have them.
