Rebecca Karsner

Just finished watching! So glad you guys enjoyed this!! The performances in this were so great! Especially Sean Penn!! His scenes were so heavy and he was so convincing as a grieving father!! When I first saw this, I thought it was Dave most of the movie too.. the ending totally shocked me! I had almost even forgot those 2 boys were even in the film by the time the plot twist was revealed lol 😆 The girl who played Jimmy's daughter is Emmy Rossum.. she is the main character Fiona on the show Shameless. She's actually a fantastic actress and has an amazing singing voice! Anyways so glad you enjoyed this! Clint Eastwood has made some bangers!! 😁 Hope you have a wonderful night!! 😊

Mister Lou

Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon and Sean Penn! masterclass in acting AND directing by a great actor/director Clint Eastwood. Me too, fell for it and thought it was Dave, my first time watching this. BUT at the same time I knew I was watching something special and some top notch acting by Tim, Sean and Kevin. the young brother, the mute, was also Bruce Willis' son on Unbreakable.. not much of a spoiler, if you haven't seen it yet. great reaction guys! find better stash spots for your candy.

Michele G

I just looked up why Sean’s wife left; in the book his job had made him distance, she had an affair, she ended up preggo and he started wondering if it was his, she left. The reason she never says anything on the phone is she’s giving him a chance to make amends. In the final phone call he does say sorry and then that’s when she speaks. He asks her to come home and she does. That’s a summary of what I read online. I’ve always wondered too….i had no idea. I need to read the book. This movie is so good ! It’s one of my favorites ! Sean Penn is phenomenal in this!!!!

Michele G

I am Sam is so good !!! He’s such a great actor !

Michele G

Rebecca you did good!!!!! I love this movie so much. Sean Penn’s acting is what makes this so good!!

JBGirlNextDoor

Oh I was so excited when I saw this show up such an amazing movie glad you guys enjoyed it thank you so much! ☀️

Stacey

Agree 💜 Soundtrack is awesome too

Skip

Excellent recommendation!!!,

Skip

Now you guys got this one under your belt, you have to watch Gone Baby Gone! Made just a few years after this, by the same mystery novelist, takes place in the same neighborhood in Boston, absolute crackerjack of a murder mystery thriller, with an awesome cast giving career best performances. Mystic River is fantastic and won all the awards, I’m my humble opinion Gone Baby Gone is just as good, if not better. Amy Ryan got a supporting actress nomination for it and I will say to my dying day she should have won, it’s not a big part but one of the best performances (of a horrible person) I have ever seen

Virgil Downs

Agree. To me Gone baby gone is better. Mystic River is good but Gone is on another level. It's directed by Ben Affleck staring Casey Affleck, Amy Ryan, Ed Harris, Morgan Freeman. Dennis Lehane wrote both books he also wrote Shutter Island.

Rebecca Karsner

Gone Baby Gone is so underrated and fantastic! Amy Ryan was excellent in that!

tab

Best Actor for Sean Penn and Best supporting for Tim Robbin’s = Great Movie!

Skip

Amy Ryan is not in it too much but goooolllllleeeee is she good

Skip

Im new to patreon and not that bright but even I know Rebecca is doing it better than anyone

Darth Brooks

Oh yeah Rebecca has great taste in all the movies I've seen her suggest. So if she keeps up the VIP status we'll have some really great stuff coming in the future for sure.

Hyperion

Ain't gonna lie, Dave killed Dave. Great movie! Makes you think about a lots of things.

dedknedy

It's weird looking at Tim Robbins in the Shawshank Redemption poster behind Asia whenever Dave is in the scene. Great reaction!

MiM

Thanks to Rebecca for this recommendation. I was so excited to see the notification for this reaction to pop up. Every time I see this movie, I always feel so bad for Dave at the end.

Josip Buretić

I don't know if I would say better but definitely great movie. And when I saw that this was VIP recommendation from you ❤️ I mean you always have great recommendations 🙏🏻

Michele G

Dave and Dave’s wife 🤦🏼‍♀️ His wife is a great actress too ! But she was NOT in the Conjuring lol

Neon_ninja

Interesting little fact. The Savage brothers referenced in the film? Real set of guys in a family. My father built their home (and their lawyers home one street over - no joke), they were our neighbors. WILD Stories. I learned how to play basketball in their driveway, and my brother took Karate with them near the back bay area in Boston, they would car pool as kids70s-early 80s) lol. crazy, crazy guys.

Neon_ninja

if you enjoyed this, you might really like the movie SLEEPERS. also based on true history and the atrocities that happened to kids in those old juvenile prison systems. My dad was in one, he watched that movie once - cried - wouldn't talk about it ever again about what happened in there.

Josip Buretić

Yes the great Vera Farmiga was in Conjuring And Laura Linney(Jimmy-s crazy wife)was in The Truman Show.

yrag

Great movie. They should definitely watch it. Although I wasn't a fan of the depiction of Angie. Not a big deal if you didn't read the books, but I loved that series and felt like they completely neutered her character in the movie.

Josip Buretić

I also agree!! Loved I am Sam very much!! Sean Penn and Dakota Fanning are both great in it.... "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"

Abby

I do not want to be heartbroken as the description to this movie describes. More comedy please

David Croft-Ogawa

I never heard of this film! Thank you for bringing it up. I’ll check it out!

2026-09-05 06:00 SPOILERS!! I love this movie! That’s because the original source material is a novel by Dennis Lehane. He has written some great works and the films based on those stories are always excellent. Clint Eastwood is a phenomenal Director. He knows to buy the rights of best-selling books so he can make the film. Hence “Mystic River.” I went down the same rabbit holes that Asia and BJ did when I watched this movie for the first time. If you watch it again, you’ll realize that there were clues all along, as well as red herrings. The character of Jimmy is the King of the neighborhood, a tough guy, always in charge, like a Don in Sicilian families. Remember, as a kid, how he spoke to the two men that they thought were cops? He gave everybody lip, the expression on the child actor’s face says it all. Sean, who ended up being a cop, was a good friend. He was still a follower where Jimmy was the leader. Dave ends up being the kid who was chosen, abducted and molested. That heinous childhood trauma destroyed him for life. That explains why he was so conflicted. This story takes us through Dave’s mind from his perspective. His world was upside down and backward. He didn’t know what was real. His wife ends up telling Jimmy she thinks Dave is the murderer. Why? Because Jimmy is still the head of the neighborhood, killing those who have done wrong yet financially taking care of the families left behind. I think Sean, the cop, knew that Jimmy killed Dave. Everything points in that direction, including their last conversation when Sean asks Jimmy “what did you do?” I don’t think Sean would ever go after him for the crime. As always, Sean is the follower and Jimmy is the King. He was morbidly sad until Celeste, his wife, reminds him of who he is. There is another story by Dennis Lehane, made into a film, called “The Drop.” It stars Tom Hardy and is an excellent movie. I would highly recommend it for your reaction viewing. Many thanks to the VIPs who are picking really good movies of late.

Wolf

i would rather wear jolly pantaloons as i was pushed into a vat of used syringes and three month old lipo suction waste. than watch this movie. now having said that. ty vip peeps for having they back. nothing but love for you guys!! and you pick what YOU would like to see them react n don't let others perfect descriptions of your choice dissuade you : D srsly tho thanks for supporting them that much!

Michele G

Sleepers is so good !! It’s one of my favorites ! Kevin Bacon is so good in that too !

Rebecca Karsner

Lol! Out of curiosity what is it about the movie you don't like? It's okay if you don't like it.... everyone has different taste... and that is what I love about movies! 😁 I'm sure I'll request more that some people won't like lmao 🤣 😁

Wolf

well for one it has sean penn in it. and two it has sean pen in it. not even the GOAT clint eastwood can clean off that stank. you ever have some actors you just can't stand? yea? well all of them probably have something to do with sean penn. meber your cat you had when you was little and your parents said it went away to live in the happy circus for cats? nuh uh. sean penn ran over it. in conclusion if i watched it i wouldnt like the artistic feel the cinemeto no. no it's just sean penn. can't wait to see what you pick next! it's good to give them some deep movies. gives me the fizz all these folks enjoying watching them react. i am guessing asia was a Fire Controlman on a guided missle cruiser n missed all these movies as she was at sea alot. or they were found living in a cave in redbelt oregon. one of the two. they prolly had the cave next to my aunt who is still there.

Pink Martini AZ

To answer your question about why Kevin Bacons characters wife left. He said it directly to her on the phone. The first thing he did was apologize to her. Then he said, “I pushed you away.” His partner was right earlier in the movie. After Kevin bacon said, “I don’t know why she won’t say why she left.” Then his partner responded, “maybe YOU are the one who is supposed to say it.” And so he did, and that’s what she needed to hear and finally started talking.

Michele G

Sean Penn 😂😂 why the hate?? 😂😂 that comment made me lol. I love him though. That’s the main reason I love this movie so much. I actually found him super attractive in this movie. I don’t know why bc I never have before. His acting was so good and the way he seemed to have control, it’s super sexy in my opinion. You probably just had fire shoot out of your ears. I’m sorry 🫣

Michele G

Well Sean said the kids confessed that they just wanted to scare her and the gun went off. She ran and they were afraid she would tell so they beat her and then shot her again. I don’t think they ever had any intention of murdering her or anyone. So there was so motive other than they got scared and killed her so they wouldn’t get in trouble. Maybe they were initially trying to scare her off bc she was the girlfriend and then it spiraled. I don’t know, I haven’t read the book so maybe the book has more details about why they did it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

KimM

Awesome reaction and enjoyed watching with you!! Your reactions never disappoint!!! BJ, since your favorite is thriller crime films, be sure to check out the movie "Primal Fear" 1996 with Richard Gere and Edward Norton. It is a gripping psychological crime and legal thriller that still holds up over time. You won't be disappointed!

Rebecca Karsner

Lol okay that's fair that you don't like Sean Penn. Yes there are actors I genuinely don't like. For instance I don't like Kevin Spacey anymore. His accusations are terrible and even his own brother called him a monster. I wouldn't go and support anything he makes from here on out.. but he's been in a few movies I really love like Se7en and American Beauty so it's kind of a struggle. I know Sean Penn has some wild stories about him. So that's totally fair to not like him. I don't know a lot about his personal life and he's not even a favorite of mine but I do think he gave a great performance in this.. definitely deserved the Oscar for this more so thank his performance in Milk. He was great in it but I was rooting for Mickey Rouke to win that year for The Wrestler 😢 So it's like I'm a die hard fan. Lol. Picking a comedy next month and October I'm torn between picking a horror or a thriller. 🤔😁

Rebecca Karsner

And lmao!! Not Sean Penn running over my cat when I was a child!! Lmao that is dark

Anthony

Whoever made the VIP request, great selection, imo. Just a couple of recommendations: The Town Dead Man Walking HBO anthology series: True Detective (if for nothing else, season 1)

Wolf

naw. just threw up a little in my mouth. it's all good @michele wait. uhhp. shew...pass the breath mints. i got old faithful goin on up in here. mercy day. @rebecca yea spacey is a drop kick but in 7 to be fair he does play a monster. se7en was a master class movie that plays as good today as the day it was shot. that NIN sound track pounding out enough ambiance by itself to fill 10 movies.

Mami's Gatos

I honestly love yall as a couple. As a fellow southerner, will yall adopt me?? I'm 34!!

Dan Gonya

i want in! I'm only 39!

Paula Turner

I think you guys would really like "Sleepers". One of the best books I ever read and they made it into an incredible movie. All star cast....

Michael Wise

Clint Eastwood is a master director and storyteller. He has said he never makes movies the Hollywood way, all wrapped up with a nice ribbon on top and a happy ending. His movies reflect real life, a bit too closely at times. His films certainly make you think, and you may also find yourself uneasy watching his films, not knowing exactly HOW to feel about what you just watched. He is one of the greats and shall be remembered as such long after he's gone. Another film of his I have mentioned here numerous times before, and I'll keep on mentioning, is DIRTY HARRY (1971). It is THE movie that shot him into superstardom, a position he never left. You really need to check that one out, it's one of his best and an excellent cop thriller. Asia, BJ, as usual....GREAT reaction! Thank u! Cheers!

Dan Gonya

Sleepers is incredible, but it's really intense too. I remember writing a paper on it in college.

Ray M

His buddy Sean knew he killed Dave but protected him the whole movie he's basically a savage boy

Pink Martini AZ

Fact: Sean Penn is a talented actor. Also Fact: he is one giant A-hole. LOL. It is for sure a sucky catch 22 when the movie or role is great but the person is someone you can’t stand personally. I can’t stand him either.

Dan Gonya

Laura Linny wasn't in The Conjuring. She was in The Exorcism of Emily Rose.

Tracy Varner

I love Dead Man Walking!!! Would like to see them definitely react to that.

Tracy Varner

I love Sean Penn. This movie is one of my favorites with him. 2 other movies that I love him in is Dead Man Walking, and a very young Sean Penn in At Close Range

CD

This is a great movie, And Asia I haven't been able the same since I watched "IT" either - that scared the crap out of me as a kid and i've never recovered LOL! Don't watch thrillers with your feet down :)

Anthony

Thanks, Tracy :)
