Hi A&B, I’m not sure if you knew that Sylvester Stallone wrote this movie. He actually wrote all of them and directed the rest, but anyway, he said he wrote this movie as a love story, not a sports story. The main character happens to be a boxer.

Asia, you need to see Rocky II. Quick note, the main singer of the guys on the street corner is Frank Stallone, Sylvester Stallone’s brother. You know him from Tombstone. He was born in NYC but lived in Philly for a bit. I went to the same high school. Every Christmas Eve, I stay up all night and watch all the Rocky movies. He wrote this story and sadly sold the rights to make it. Which cost almost nothing. He wants to get the rights back to leave it to his kids. Look into the background of the making of this movie. It's a good read. Paulie passed a couple weeks ago. They recently opened a Rocky store at the steps of the Art Museum in Philly next to his statue.

Did you know that Rocky won the Oscar for Best Picture and even though Sylvester Stallone wrote the movie, the producers didn’t want him to play Rocky. He fought hard and showed them by how well the movie did.

Fighters use a saline/vapor spray in their nose to help constrict the vessels, less blood if hit in the nose. The salve the wipe on them in the points of the cheeks and eyebrows helps prevent skin breakage when hit.

Asia, I saw your intro about just not having any interest in seeing Rocky and I completely understand. Another reactor, Cassie, from Popcorn in Bed, felt exactly the same way. Her husband tried to get her to watch it for years and she finally did for her channel and loved it. She went through the entire trilogy. Like you, she realized it’s a love story. Even though Rocky is a boxer, he has a good heart and is a very endearing guy. BTW: The dog in the movie was actually his dog.

Rocky 5 does not deserve the hate it gets. It's a good movie. I don't want to give too much away but I'll say that, yes it's different, but it's necessarily different. It fits the character arc

Rocky took a lot of work to get turned into a film. It only had a $1 million budget and ended up making 225 million in the box office. Talk about successful. It was the first sports movie to win an Oscar. The movie also won three Academy Awards.

I finally finished the reaction. I've made comments in the past recommending Rocky for Asia. I was worried when I saw the intro when she said "I don't like boxing." 😰 Definitely watch the rest of the Rocky movies. They're all pretty good. I loved Rocky 3 when I was a kid. Don't want to give away any spoilers, so I'll just say 'Meatball !' Asia and BJ I would be so tickled if you could do a reaction to your origunal reaction for the song 'Gonna Fly Now' (the theme from this movie) and read the chat too. You're going to love it. Respectfully disagree. Rocky 5 fit the character arc. It makes sense within the context of the overall story. I think people were originally disappointed with it when it was the finale but, when 6 came out years later, they are finding more appreciation for it.

Once you are finished with Rocky, I would strongly suggest watching "Cinderella Man" 2005 with Russell Crowe. Just as good as Rocky and a very heart warming feel good true story about former heavyweight champion James J. Braddock.

Asia stumbled upon the great combat sports 10-point scoring system controversy inadvertently. How? Lemme explain. "Why didn't rocky win? He was messing the other guy up more." True, and if that fight went on more rounds, Rocky probably would have ultimately won by not having the broken ribs, probably. No way to know for sure, but it was nooooot looking good for Apollo. But... Every single round of fighting (MMA and Boxing) is like its own fight. The events of a prior round have no bearing round to round. Now, if you get dropped in round one like Apollo, it is going to mess your performance up, so you're likely to do poorly moving forward, but that's not a 100 percent chance. Some fighters recover quickly. Others have super weak chins where they get jabbed once and they drop dead. This system where every round is scored as its own thing and someone MUST win the round is the 10 point must system you hear about in fighting. A 10-9 is a round where someone does better than someone else, but it can literally be just throwing one more jab than the other guy. Its up the judges. Some things that are not up to judges are point reductions. If you punch a guy in the junk on purpose, the rules make it impossible for you to win that round. The BEST you could do is finish your opponent, but if you don't, they get that round free. Another thing not left to judges are knockdowns. In the first round, Rocky knocked apollo down for a substantial 7/8 second count. This almost always results in a further point loss for the person knocked down. This would make it a 10/8 round. Basically, a knockdown like Rocky had bought him 2 rounds (won him 2 rounds). There are a lot of scenes where we just see a round card. Every round after the first couple and last few. I think it would be fair to assume that Apollo consistently threw more, landed more, and took less significant strikes in those rounds. This leaves us with the "Rocky" rounds, where the big dramatic stuff would need to count for 10/8s on maybe more than just the first to swing it to being a split decision. However, the moments when Apollo was in trouble have to be the most embarrassing stuff in the world. Rocky is a janitor at a gym lol. In real life, this has happened multiple times too. Buster Douglas v Mike Tyson. Francis Ngannou knocking down Tyson Fury. Anthony Joshua v Andy Ruiz. There are too many to name where the underdog either outright wins via KO or gets some kind of moral victory that kinda robs their opponent of shine. The only different take on this was in Pride Fighting (MMA). In that rule set, the person who was more messed up at the end was the loser. More intuitive honestly, lol.

Adrian seems like a really really introverted person, I love that they wrote her that way. The scene where mick shows up, is also really interesting and rockys yelling through the apartment. This big opportunity fell into his lap and he's just processing it and all the feelings of so many years come up. It puts everything in perspective for him, whereas for so long he had accepted his lot in life that "it stinks". That 100 thousand was like half a mill or more in today's money I believe. We need to go all the way to rocky 4 (not rocky 5) I'm thinkin.

I, like so many others, love Rocky. He’s a character that means a lot to a lot of people and truly represents the human spirit. I would love if you guys continued through the whole rest of the series (number 6, Rocky Balboa is my second favorite after the first), but if nothing else you’ve absolutely got to watch Rocky II.

By the next one you will totally be invested in all the characters. I promise you won’t be disappointed even going into CREED 1-3, which you won’t understand unless you watch Rocky 1-6 first, it just hits different knowing the history. YES ASIA WE NEED A ROCKY 2 REACTION IMMEDIATELY! Rocky 1 is actually my 3rd favorite in the franchise, the best is yet to come imo. In Rocky 2 you be much more invested in the characters and the growth. Also Sylvester says himself Truth be told Rocky is actually a love story, boxing is actually the footnote.

Loved it - This isn't just a boxing franchise. Its about Rocky's heart, and romance, an epic romance, he's the ultimate underestimated underdog, (Stallone was born himself in hells kitchen) and? If you watch 4? I personally recommend the directors cut, not the original. For me? The directors cut is so much better. It brings more depth to it imo, and how Stallone really wanted the movie to be. The original is very political. Stallone wanted it less so iirc. PLEASE keep going! ($40) was worth over $250 in todays money, btw, in 1974 lol still not a lot, considering... Stallone's son, who's in Rocky V died at 36 as well sadly. If you get a chance? On your own? On Amazon watch the family Stallone, I think its called. Its interesting, he even goes back to Philly with his daughters.

Nearly the same as you, I can't put my finger on it, but it felt like it was missing some human connection in the story. And I'm struggling for the appropriate word, but it was not as raw as the Rocky movies... too fluffy, maybe overproduction to fit with what one person's ideal was for current day. 🤔 It didn't feel as authentic or make me think it could possibly happen in real life the way the movie portrayed it. With all of that said, I liked it, but wouldn't recommend it to someone who wants the same feel as the Rocky's.

Rocky is such a great classic it is still talked about and used as references in films and shows to this very day. Can’t forget Breaking Bad when Jesse got his face beaten to a pulp by Hank and Saul showed up at the hospital and said. “ Yo Adrian, Rocky wants his face back.” 👍🥊

When Asia had her comments at the beginning of this, I was clapping and giggling because I knew, I just knew she’d be cheering for and loving Rocky at the end. Just like we all did. I knew she was going to be pleasantly surprised that it revolves around the characters and story and not the boxing. Hands down, Rocky is THE best Hollywood character ever. He is a man with a heart of gold and he never loses that in any of the sequels, including Creed. And that’s a huge HELL YES to Rocky II

I was wondering when the “Where is Dexter New Blood?!” Demand going to pop up in this post. I swear every single post has someone demanding that. BJ and Asia watched and reacted to two episodes a week, every week for all six seasons with no breaks. Can they take a few months to get a break and watch other things? One person on this post says they are leaving the subscription because of too much Dexter bullshit and another one is threatening to leave because they haven’t watched Dexter New Blood yet. Sheesh!

No, it goes to whoever gets the 2 out of 3 votes from the judges (in this case, Creed got those). They only announce that it's a split decision to highlight that the fight was close (which they knew because they were already talking about NOT having a rematch in anticipation of people asking for one). The only time the champ keeps their belt when they don't win is in a tie or no-contest (or if the loss is overturned because of something like a bad drug test).

Rocky is best over the others. You are introduced to the characters you learn about them and you go on the journey with them it was heralded with praise and awards. Yes Rocky II is great, some of the others are entertaining but there is a drop off. Cinderella Man is a another Boxing film 1930s period film very well done.

the important part of that sentence is "defended his title" which implies a win. A split decision doesn't inherently go to the champion, like Jimmie said it's who got 2 out of 3 judges. That means Rocky could win on a split decision. "split decision" just means the 3 judges weren't unanimous on a winner. Either fighter can have 2 out 3 judges, not just the champ

You are right again, it's a classic a true story controversial for Lamottas violence toward women and anything that breathes. He didnt even fear the mob. Women organizations back then were on the move against the film. Cinderella Man a well made film was violently soft compared to the brutal AA cinematographic classic.

When I said Rocky is best I mean among the Rocky films. Lamotta with an author wrote his book he would not be able to write a screenplay. Scorcese took Jakes book and with information from historians, journalists etc they developed a screenplay.

As it's well known Stallone wrote Rocky some people naively think Sly is the character. We also all know that Hollywood Studios wanted his written work. He wasn't an idiot. Just watch him on interview shows some critically acclaimed shows at that.

This is one of my favourite movies. Anyone who doesn't want to watch it because it's a boxing movie - it really isn't. It's a love story, with some boxing in it.
