Planet of the Apes

Karl Kraus

i hope you watch the 2005 King Kong! That was a compelling reaction too!

Andre Anderson

Idk why I thought I was voting for the 2011 version lol you guys should react to that one

Nawaf

You should check out Planet of the Apes (Reboot) Collection 2011-2017 great trilogy

Nawaf

I think most of us did 😅

Reaction Junkie

Haha yea I voted thinking of the 2011 version too doh

Sapporo Dragon

Wow, going old school tonight. This movie creeped me out when I was a kid but it’s definitely good to watch this one before you watch the new version so you have something to compare it to. Also, if you continue to watch the old ones, they expand a little more on the whole time travel paradox situation. Just a heads up though, they are pretty cheesy 🧀

Rich

🎶 Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius! Oh, Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius! Dr. Zaius! 🎶 🤘

Anthony Jackson

Pretty sure most of us thought it would be the 2011-2024 versions! 😂 I’ve actually never seen these so I would have to watch on my own time and come back!

Kyndu

Good choice. The 1968 original opens the way for all sequels. In the book Taylors ship is still in orbit. He and Nova escape the planet of the apes with their Son and go back to earth... The End. But Rod Sterling (Twilight Zone creator) added the ending twist. Now understanding that, the 2011 version fit the original movie.

Rio Mendoza

Sweet. Im not getting notifications to uploads anymore and to be honest i like it. Its always a surprise when i check to see if anything has been posted. I come here and boom new post its nice lol. Love this film i hope you all enjoy it.

Christina Randall

This was post nuclear war. The next three movies in sequence will explain further. I believe the 3rd or 4th movie will introduce Ceasar.

George Bakis

Guys there are 4 more movies in order Beneath the...Conquest of....Escape to.....Battle for..... Beneath the second film continues where this ends. These other 4 were made in the 70s. Beneath continues with all the same characters and some new ones. If you go thru these in order Asia they will answer all your questions.

DP

Oh you’re doing the originals. I thought u just meant the recent trilogy

Rio Mendoza

People keep saying that which is kind of weird, like why would you watch the newer films before you watched the old ones first when you think about it? Doesn't that seem weird that you would do it that way?

George Bakis

I assume most here watched this on DVD or cable. I watched this in the movie theater during its 2nd release in the 70s. The scene where the apes caught Taylor in the net and raised him above the crowd and when Taylor said "get your damn stinking paws off me you damn dirty ape" the movie theater EXPLODED in roaring cheer.

George Bakis

THE ORIGINAL lineup was not the cheesy typical predictable ones like in 2011 and on. Amazing these directors past several years needed assistance, influence from the original. Too bad the latter Ape imitators could not hatch something from there own minds a new idea instead of tagging along with the originators. Man, come up with a fresh idea. "Apes" was done and was heralded back in the day. Go do something else lol.

George Bakis

Not if you read all those who left there opinions here majority wanted the original.

Matthew Beilewech

I'm glad, as I'm sure many other voters are, that you chose the original version, written by Rod Serling, creator of The Twilight Zone TV series. It has one of the grimmest surrealest endings ever

Danna

The three chimps did the See no evil, say no evil and hear no evil.

George Bakis

After the 5th and Final Planet of the Apes film was completed in the 70s. They released ALL 5 TOGETHER. You would pay once and they would start 10am and run through all 5. We would get out of the theater about 6pm. Loews Metropolitan Brooklyn NY. Everyone was given a special credit card size stub so you can leave the theater and comeback if you like.

Kyndu

"Into the Air"

Nuthin Good at 4

This reaction was so good…glad you watched the original movie from 1968…can’t wait for you all to watch the next ones….yay!!!

Pink Martini AZ

Lots of people commented to watch the original. Including me.

Pink Martini AZ

We were all waiting for the surprise ending. Haha we were all like, WTF????

Tek

Great reaction, knew you guys would enjoy it!! The next one after this is Beneath The Planet Of The Apes 1970. Then Escape From The Planet Of The Apes 1971, and Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes 1972. The fifth one is Battle for the Planet of the Apes 1973. The first four are the best imo.

Teri

Good movie but now it all seems to close to where we are headed. We're almost there now. Damn you! haha but no seriously. But A. I. might be the "thing" that locks us up or tries to get rid of humans. The actor Charlton Heston who played Taylor is the actor that played "Moses" in the 1956 movie "The Ten Commandments" which is usually shown on tv every year around Easter time.

Em Gomez

This story, this movie and its sequels were so far ahead of their time. Like BJ alluded to, the special effects as well were amazing for its time. As a kid I used to plan my whole day around these movies and watching them that night. Awesome flicks. The remakes and the reboots had their moments and in fact a new one will be released soon. Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes. Still though, you just cant beat the OG's. Great reaction. Always fun watching the movies along with you both!

George Bakis

Taylor/Charlton Heston was in the epic BEN HUR then later was OMEGA MAN.

KenZo

aww i wanted them to watch the newer/ remade one 😭

George Bakis

Yes do you think the 3 chimp reaction is not as well known the past several years?

Danna

Lol, yes, makes me feel old.

Darth Brooks

Sitting here about to start the reaction wondering if Asia still smells that pie filling/crust 😂 Also Jim Carrey said "Unanananominimity" in Me, Myself and Irene. I still pronounce unanimity that way and facility like in Cable Guy lol✌❤ fam!

Daniel Kapity

Thank God they watched the original i can't stand the remake.

Dan Gershgol

I first watched this as a kid on TV in the early 90s. It has been my favorite sci fi movie ever since. Your reaction to the ending was the same as mine. Jaw dropping. This was suppose to be a twilight zone episode but was turned into a feature film. The person in charge of the makeup received a special reward from the academy. First of its kind because there was not a category for best makeup before that time. There is a theory that the Taylor expedition was sent out to start civilization on another planet because humans on earth were doomed to destroy themselves.

Kimberly Tyda

Big 2nd for Omega Man. One of my favorites.

Ekk

I hope you guys check out more in this franchise, even the modern ones are super cool. If you wanted to check out another sci fi movie from this era i'd recommend the original Westworld movie from 1973. This material was later adapted into the amazing HBO show. Also Mad Max!!

George Bakis

You're so right. The vampire clan walking the streets and some food worth more than gold.

S.R1

The ending got me as well🤯

Karim

I’ve had so many people (including a couple of college professors) theorize to me that this was actually a warning against the Civil Rights movement. The Apes represented Black people “taking over” after the civil rights. Sort of a “If we’re not careful they will do to us what we have done to them” type thing.

Dan Gonya

When BJ said that maybe those things were scarecrows, and Asia was like, "Scare what though?" I couldn't help myself...I loudly guffawed out, "Crows!" Then I was altogether too pleased with my own joke and immediately had to post about it...which brings us here. I'll have something better to talk about later probably.😑

ADHD Reacts

The newer franchise is basically a prequel to this movie

sharkey197

For those of us who were around when this first came out, there is no overstating the impact of the ending. In the sixties, we all were too aware of the possibility of a nuclear war. It was even thought that by the 80's, we would inevitably get into one. We did drills by hiding under our desks at school. So the idea of blowing up the planet like this was a shocker and a horrifying thought. I loved your reactions! Just shows that older movies can still make the impact. The makeup was groundbreaking since it was feared the audience would just laugh at the apes. John Chambers designed incredible prosthetics that allowed the actors to show facial expressions and eye movements, giving them a unique opportunity to convey emotions. He got a special academy award for it, since the oscars didn't yet give out a makeup award each year back then. The themes explored in the film can also be so relevant today. We are still arguing about religion versus science.

Dan Gonya

This has probably been mentioned in other comments, but during the tribunal scene, they deliberately put in the visual joke of the 3 monkeys doing "Hear no evil, See no evil, Speak no evil." I'm surprised you guys haven't heard of such a thing just because of its memetic repetition.

Lady Shar

I do believe that there is a new Planet of the Apes movie coming out in May. I am very excited. This is my husband's favorite franchise and we will be watching it in theaters as soon as it's out, and in the mean time I can watch your reactions to refresh my memory 😀

Larry Smith

The opening scene with the ship in the water was filmed at Lake Powel, Utah and nearby canyons.

SixEight Guy

Y'all have GOT to watch the sequels to this movie!!

SixEight Guy

There were no monkeys. Gorillas and Orangs at the top. Gorillas were the military, leaders, and politicians. Orangutans were the scholars, religious figures, and judiciary. The chimpanzees were on the bottom. Some of them were doctors but most of them had low level jobs.

SixEight Guy

Maybe they will one day, but this one tells a superior story that makes you appreciate the newer ones even more.

SixEight Guy

There were already prequels to this in the 70s.

Dan Gonya

I've always seen it as 3 monkeys...in the movie they are all apes.

Andi Szilagyi

Yep, that was rolling through my head the whole time.

Andi Szilagyi

Now you need to check out Soylent Green, another classic dystopian story starring our dear Charlton Heston.

Raider Ron

I think Beyond The Planet Of The Apes is next. It continues where this left off. Finish the sequels before starting the newer version. They even had a tv series which was pretty good.

Yum

Don't watch the old sequels they are bad to alright, with one good one in there. Skip ahead to "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (2011)

Justin Freeman

Yum is right. Don't watch any old sequel

ADHD Reacts

Yeah sort of, don't wanna say much incase they watch them but they are still prequels following the same story of ceasar

asiaandbj

Omg Darth!! That’s what it was!!! You remembered!!! Unanananominimity!!! Lol!! And NO!! 😆😆 You know I hurried up and got that stuff off!! The kids and BJ are just having a time with the jokes since Sunday! 😂

SixEight Guy

The old sequels are fine, and they help tell the complete story. Plus, it makes watching the new ones more impactful and enjoyable.

SixEight Guy

Yum is wrong. The sequels are good and tell the complete story that left Asia and BJ hanging.

Rich

I honestly thought this was filmed on my beach for a moment, similar cliffs and rocks. I know Get Carter, Alien 3 and some scenes from Vikings were.

joseph buckley

You need to watch the direct sequel to this Beneath the Planet Of The Apes

George Bakis

Beneath the Planet of the Apes where EVERYONE returns with a few additions like James Franciscus. All the questions Asia had will be answered going through Beneath then Conquest and Escape. Finally Battle for.

George Bakis

Your right originals we know was back in 68 followed thru the 70s. Back then over time it was created and born. It's a shame lol decades later these Jethros couldn't hatch or come up with a fresh idea. Planet of the Apes well, it's been done. Pretty simple to just tag along

George Bakis

Who are these professors? Interesting if there were any books published back then decades ago or even later, on this word of mouth. If that's the case then it's outrageous that decades later others made more films.

George Bakis

I guess it was more fun for those over 18 because an hour later they replayed all 5 that ran till around 2am. I was underage at 12 and went to the day show. That night showing sounds cooler right?

Dan Gonya

I never cared much for Beneath, but loved Escape and Conquest. Battle for, was okay...as long as it still had Roddy McDowell, I was fine with it. 😂

Jesse McAdams

And now you should understand the ending of Spaceballs.

Raider Ron

I even enjoyed the TV show.

George Bakis

I agree Escape and Conquest were fresh new storylines. Beneath because it continues where Planet left off.

Sometimes

If you liked this. the 70's Three Musketeers is a great couple of movies! Really fun swashbuckling and romance!

Yum

I'm not sure why people need things over explained to them. I actually think the old sequels reduce the impact of the first movie. As a stand alone movie it has a great impact, the sequels don't enrich it. Remember many franchises continue because of money not for story telling. They go deeper into lore to mine more content, the original novel was only ONE book and didn't need to over explain itself. Rod Serling is one of the great tv and film sci-fi writers and wrote for the first but none of the sequels. You are sacrificing better storytelling, acting and directing just for more lore? Franchises that are planned are far better than those extended for money. It shows with the cohesive story telling of the modern prequel trilogy compared to the stories of the old sequels.

Yum

@SixEight Guy Films are subjective to a degree so it's fine if you like the sequels. Critically and audience ratings would back up my thoughts though. The quality of talent on the films is a clear drop off too. PLANET OF THE APES (1968) - Franklin J. Schaffner the director is an Oscar winning director for Patton. - Rod Serling is one of the greatest screen sci-fi writers of all time (6 time Emmy winner). - Charleton Heston is an Oscar winning actor. Critic Average Rating 79/100 Audience Rating 80/100 2 Oscar Nominations BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES (1970) - Ted Post is a tv director whose films were panned by critics and audiences - James Franciscus a mediocre actor, respectfully Critic Average Rating 46/100 Audience Rating 60/100 0 Oscar Nominations And Beneath isnt even the worst sequel! So my thoughts are more in the consensus of critics and audiences, so maybe you are wrong. Being a fan of the series is fine though and I dont actually think you're wrong in liking them. BUT you need to see that as there are thousands that watch Asia and BJ and most of them won't be bothered to watch mediocre sequels. I do like 'Escape' and 'Battle' is dumb fun at times but I don't think it's worth clogging the channel with them at this moment. The modern trilogy though is both well loved by critics and audiences and doesn't drag. It was a planned trilogy and it shows in how clear the story telling and narrative arc is

Lost Monk

Why are you mentioning spoilers? The cardinal sin committed against reactors are spoilers. How do you not know this?

Jo Stahlman

Me too! I couldn't get enough when I was a kid

Jo Stahlman

You are right that the first film is the superior film. It really is the one to watch. However, the sequels are fun and lore rocks. There are some great moments in the sequels worth seeing. I haven't seen those movies in forever, but I would totally be down to watch them again with Asia and BJ

George Bakis

The modern?? Like the original was ancient. Spoken like a lame Rotten Tomatoes critic who listed Sean Connery #3 of all James Bonds. Your being disingenuous or you just dont know. James Fransciscus dominant roles were on TV where there was a demand for him with an explosion of programming. Lets look thru a list of your retreaded Ape actors especially Fake Apes. Your faves are from your Era your Bias and that's the point. I am comfortable, COMFORTABLE with different decades even b&w while others fall apart because they clogged there brains with video games. Point is the Apes were made and were developed how about these MODERN directors explore there minds and hatch something new not retreads. You have a bias thats oozing from every word you spew. But your need to degrade the originals because of the amount of popularity, celebratory and heralding it had received has you desperately trying to diminish its over 6 decade success. It's seems you have a hyperventilating need to do this or you will wet your pants. So go ahead.

George Bakis

The author was a Frenchman who suffered greatly as a prisoner of war at the hands of the Japanese. Your response needs a psychological conference.

George Bakis

Your in a world of claymation lol mixed with CGI etc. Hilarious. The majority of these are new era of cartoons. They should be in there own little corner. You calling James Franciscus mediocre. You dont know squat about him then we are to compare the majority of these FAKE Apes with a real actor. Get your Colorforms, video games and pray they come up with a pretend partner for you so you can grow up.

Michele Pérez

I was seven years old and 68. My family and I went to the drive-in to see this film. We went and the old station wagon, no air condition in Florida. We had to buy those mosquito repellent coils burning things to keep the bugs at bay.

Kung-Fubar

I'm late to the party but just wanted to say that this was a great reaction. And as Sharkey197 mentioned earlier the makeup FX were groundbreaking. Roddy McDowall was so in love with prosthetics that he had Chambers show him how to remove it at home. That way, after filming was done for the day, he could drive down the 101 and freak out the other drivers.
