Movement. Is it really that important? (Patreon)

Being a dad gives me a lot of time on my hands. And when I mean I have time on my hands, it’s because I can’t do anything, especially when trying to put my kids to sleep. These are the moments that I could practically do nothing but go into my thoughts. I could always find ways to kill time by browsing through endless Facebook or Instagram feeds or watch Netflix (which I usually do), but sometimes, I just get lost in my thoughts on the practical things in life are. (Like what exactly???)
In some days like today, I asked myself why is it really important to move? Everyone knows that having a healthy lifestyle means you get a chance to live longer. I'm saying “chance” because it's not really a guarantee for long life. I've heard of healthy people dying from freak accidents or even dying from heart attacks. I'm sure you've heard some stories too. And I'm sure some questions like “how’d he die, he was a health buff”, or “he eats healthy” crossed your mind.
10 years ago, I would think that the “sit-to-stand” move was a cool party trick to show off since not a lot of people can pull it off. As a parent and a movement coach, I have observed this being performed by our 2 year old effortlessly.
Tala doing the sit-to-stand move effortlessly
It's practically one of the many primal movements that we learn as children. Of course when you don't have kids, you'd still think that this move was just a cool party trick. But when you have kids, this move or any type of primal movement is heaven sent. I have used this move a lot of times when I can't use my hands because I'm carrying either Tala or Kaya.
Now why am I sharing this? It's because teaching people to move properly is one of our passions and of course it puts food on the table. If I catch myself asking this question, then it could've crossed the minds of our students many times but didn't want to offend me by asking about the practicality of the moves.
“Hi coach, what is the practical application of the sit-to-stand move or how do you apply the proper lunge in real life?”
If I was asked this question a few years back, I wouldn't have been able to give you a straight answer immediately. But now that I have kids, my answers would be… “Watch this”
Sit-to-stand in Real Life
Lunge in Real Life 😆
I have yet to discover what the real life application for handstands are. But I'm posting my picture here because it's still a cool party trick to be able to have this move up your sleeves!
Tadaaaah!
