Please welcome storied game designer David Jaffe back to Sacred Symbols+ for another rousing episode of Moriarty x Jaffe. Today, our winding two hour chat touches on lots of topics, including early 3D development, the health of publishers like Konami and Ubisoft, the fundamental principles behind the Metroidvania genre, the renaissance of paper-and-pencil RPGs, the strength of the horror genre, and more. We also talk about a ton of games and franchises: Zelda, Silent Hill, Metroid, Castlevania, Shadow Complex, Until Dawn, Kunitsu-Gami, Metaphor, and so on. We hope you enjoy our conversation, and encourage you -- as always -- to keep your feedback coming.

It’s always a good weekend when there is a new Moriarty x Jaffe or Sacred x Duke episode

The Creator of God of War gets grossed out by chicken legs at Disneyland? What the actual hell? 😆😆

Meatball

This was a fun listen on my morning walk. Love when you just shoot the shit with Jaffe. Thanks to you both!

Diddy’s Dong Quest

To be fair to Jaffe, most Metroidvanias don’t require you to just shoot walls randomly. Great episode 👍🏻

Chris Strommer

Another one with Jaffee? We are blessed 😎

Another really great one. When Jaffe reins it in and focuses, which he’s better about every episode, we get some of the most engaging content on the network. Loved it. Side note - loved hearing Jaffe call out Advent Rising. Yes it was messy but I loved it, it was so fucking cool. Disappointed that the promised trilogy was of course cancelled.

Caleb Peacock

I truly think these episodes are some of the best content here.

AngelOfCake

Over 12 hours and no complaints about Jaffe. Is it really a Jaffe episode. BTW I regret not screen capping the response he made to a comment once. I remember laughing out loud at it. However I can't remember what it was but when I think about it I laugh again. It's either autism or alcohol catching up with me.

Love the concept

Great episode. These guys really roll right into it . Retrowares Iron meat is cool.Check out Retrowares, The Translyvania Adventure of Simon Quest. No joke lol. I played it at TMG. It's fantastic.

If colin loves metroidvanias so much why did he skip metroid dread?

All this D&D talk, for whatever reason, reminded me of Eye of Judgment, on PS3. I wish I could have seen that initial idea evolve into a bigger beast. Imagine not just turning cards over but being able to have a figure for your character, that digitally stores its stats and story arc? There may be many logistics to how that wouldn’t work, but I’m a non-D&D player looking through the foggy glass. 😀

Loved the talk at the end about the glut of games. I am what I think you’d call a “casual enthusiast”—I’m subscribed to LSM (obviously) and like to follow the industry closely, but my actual time to play games is pretty limited these days (I can get through maybe 3-4 games a year). Which honestly means that I have a veritable *feast* of stuff to play at all times. I mean, in just this year we’ve gotten FF7 Rebirth, Shadow of the Erdtree, Astro Bot, Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, UFO 50, SMT V Vengeance, Silent Hill 2, and Metaphor (just to name a few)—these are all on my list, and it will probably take me 2 years to get to those titles alone. And honestly a lot of my casual gaming friends are the same. Trust me, as a representative of the ‘normie’ gamer audience, we are eating very, VERY good.

The Until Dawn movie needs to be meta. It needs to be about the characters feeling like they are being controlled. They need to be in a game and not know it. That’s the only way it will work.

Hi Colin. Regarding your shimmering issue on the PS5 with Alan Wake 2 and SH2. Is it possible you can take 2 video captures of this. One directly from in game on the PS5 and one from your mobile phone filming the TV. Would be enlightening to find out whether the issue is indeed within the Ps5, or if its possibly amplified due to the display, maybe an HDR setting or even the HDMI cable. You could do a side-by-side comparison which would prove if the TV is in fact amplifying the issue. I am seeing this light shimmering on my version of the Silent Hill2 remake on Performance mode, but it is ever so slight it's not really an issue. Now this could be subjective, and I am blind as a senile bat. But it is definitely possible that a TV/display could worsen the artifacts making it unbearable to play. I do recall you mention you had 2 of the same TV's which may or may not be setup the same way with the PS5s. Does it appear like in this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N44FB2FkFTo You may have already done this and are done with it and don't care. All good. But 1 other good test would be to run it from the portal. See if it occurs on that device as well. You may just have the eye of a hawk and this just isn't tolerable. Anyway, have a cracking day.

Jaffes inability to admit a mistake or ignorance with things like Metroid dread years later is so funny. Dude was the laughingstock of the industry for a day or two for a reason, his takes were extremely ignorant and blatantly incorrect at times. Stop clinging to it and just move on man 😂

Guybrush Threepwood

The person who wrote the huge write-up about how to test the shimmering thing in alan wake 2- I heard colin say he has more than 1 ps5 in the house and he hasn't even tested the game on the other PS5 yet. can't imagine he will be in for ANY of this unfortunately.

Lunar Tear

I also experienced the SH2 shimmering on Performance, but adjusted to Quality mode and had a great time. Took a minute to adjust, but ended up doing so just fine.

When hearing about the new King Kong game, Colin: “That’s cool though, I’ll play just about any “MetroidVania””. Unless of course it’s an actual Metroid game on Switch. 😑

Silent Hill remake blew my fucking mind. I played mostly sports and wrestling games back when the original came out. But as an adult, I absolutely adore horror games and when I finished Silent Hill 2 this past Sunday, I immediately felt a ton of emotions. So far it is my game of the year as well. What an excellent experience.

Vito Chiaramonte

This was good, and these 1-1 are some of my favorite but love that Colin just doesn't pay attention to the views / time, variety / flexibility seems like the right pocket

MISZCZOGRZMOT

I hear complaints about Until Dawn remake not being able to run @60fps on PS5, and how it's down to the engine used, on the second LSM podcast now. Is anyone aware that it uses 2 or 3 ray tracing features (UE5's software lumen, RTAO, and probably reflections that are used scarcely throughout), some sort of fluid simulation for blood, sweat and tears, and other stuff like vastly improved volumetrics? Please correct me if I'm wrong, though, since the game is so popular, that googling any technical info on this game yields zero results, and I've heard it only once briefly in a DF video. The devs were fully aware of how taxing it would be and it must've been a deliberate choice early in the dev cycle to include all this stuff and make it run @30fps for fidelity sake, cause PS5 couldn't possibly handle all of it @60fps in a non-potato-immortals of Aveum-like-sub 720p-FSR 2-abused resolution. It's not a question of engine used, or the skill of people involved - it just goes to show how RT is mostly barely noticeable(since the general consesus is that it looks worse than the og release), even though it's very taxing, and how obviously it's just not worth it.

Good old jaffe bashing religion by talking about eating food. Dude you're not well.
