In 1992, Final Fantasy V came to Super Famicom in Japan, but in the west, the seminal JRPG would remain a mystery for years. In 1999 (via PS1!) English-speaking audiences would gain access to the game for the first time (unless you played fan translations via emulator, of course), and since then -- whether on GBA, PC, phones, or more recently modern consoles -- FFV has always held an interesting place in the pantheon of great Final Fantasy titles. Is it as monumental as IV, VI, or VII? Not at all. But it's still extremely special in its own right, an adventure predicated on a robust jobs system that would later help inspire the likes of Final Fantasy Tactics, jobs utilized by a small core group of protagonists that stand the test of time (and pull at your heartstrings, too). For KnockBack's triumphant return, we thought we'd get back into the Pixel Remasters where we left off, and needless to say, we've got a lot to go over. So get in your airship, or on your chocobo, or whatever mode of transportation speaks to you most, and join us for another old-school chat.

I knew it!!! When I saw Colin was going to be on the next episode of Summon Sign and FFV was listed as the game he was playing, I knew KnockBack was making some kind of a return!!

Phil

When we needed them the most

Jordan Falduto

By gawd that's the FFV entrance theme!!!

Lunar Tear

I've long lamented this show's hiatus, so I'm excited to see it return. What's more, I just replayed FF5 within the past year, so this is perfect!

StewDog

Love when Colin does shit like this

Morten Madsen

I knew a Knockback episode on this game was coming, because i look at Colins trophies sometimes ha ha. Happy to see Knockback return. Can we please get episodes on Mass Effect 2 and 3?

Ben Hoggan

I’ve been playing final fantasy IV, V and now into VI this last month for the first time. Pumped that knock back is continuing to revisit the pixel remasters!

MattDanger87

I was literally just looking this morning and wondering why Colin had got the plat on this recently and hadn't said anything at all about it going into Summon Sign this week. What an awesome surprise! Thanks boys!

JS (clashclay)

The glorious return of KB. Grown man tears

Uppercut

I approve of this!

Andres

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jamie Hexum

LSM fans have been eating very well lately. Thanks, guys.

Awesome to have Knockback back. Final Fantasy V is one of the lesser entries IMO. It’s better than 1,2, and 3 but other than that, it’s not better than any of the others. I just feel like the story is a little weaker, at least the old version had some pretty weird difficulty spikes as well. The job system is ok in it but I always find them a little too vague with how you level up and gain stats. These are examples though of games when I hear people today say there aren’t enough women in games or it’s been dominated by male characters forever that just shows to me that they haven’t been gamers that long, only played specific types of games, or know nothing about the history of games. I honestly would love to see you guys do Final Fantasy 8. I think it would lead to really interesting discussion

Caleb Peacock

Glad Dagan could grace us with his presence

Philip Dunphy

Yes! Keep ‘em coming go go go!

Envydiel

Rick flair: WooooOOOOOO been wondering if you guys were going to finish the pixel remasters. I've been playing them off and on the last few months.

Zack Apuzzo

Dying for knockback: Shrek !!! FF is not my thing but so happy to see my fav podcast return!

Ethical mailman

This is amazing timing. I’m almost finished with FFV. I like it way more than anticipated.

Gabe Manuel

So happy to see a new Knockback episode.

Jeremie Holt

That’s what I said. I think it’s the most anime of all the FFs

Lunar Tear

The conversation about fighting God in JRPGs - there's this one YouTuber who did an excellent video essay on why that trope is so prominent in JRPGs specifically. It's Moon Channel's video "Why do you always kill Gods in JRPGs?" Also, as far as Persona 4 being smaller scope and brought up in the context of not fighting God...I do recall that Colin didn't quite finish the game lol.

Ryan

The best LSM show is baaaaaack

DavidG

God episode but as a long time listener to LSM I need to remind you that Dagan forgo to do his Dad joke at the end as he did before.

Christian Sovereign

Thank the Lord Knockback is still alive. I want them to do Metal Gear Solid 4

Keith Richards

I understand that recording knockback like this episode is more work than the other shows because you have to play an entire video game...but let's be honest...it's worth it. Keep on truckin' boyz.

Colin Kolhoven

Just here to say that I've been a Patron for a long while here and Knockback has always been by far my favorite show. I'm so happy it's back and thank you both for a wonderful episode.

StinkyPinky

Hey Guys, glad Knockback is back! Just a quick note about FFV. You seemed to have missed a huge part of the job system in relation to the freelancer class. Each mastered job gives you a permanent stat increase to the freelancer class making it the most powerful class end game. The game really wants you to stick to the jobs and even tells you when you go back to the tutorial town late game. Thanks!

Philip Dunphy

Currently listening on the subway in NYC going to check out some Amano at the Lomex Gallery

Blake Krogerson

LETS GO MORE KNOCKBACK! This is my favorite podcast

Kyle Chenard

Can you call it Knockback if you don't end it with a dad joke? So glad to have it back. Never played FFV and you both may of convinced me to play it

Nathan Densley

Finally got to this boys. Thanks. Great to hear your opinions on this game. 5 was a huge surprise for me. Now one of my favourite. I was playing the games along side you both. So I'll start 6 here right away. It's been a long wait.

Derek Hart

Unlocking the dual-wield ability coupled with the rapid attack skill would crush everything in this game lol. I love how the more time you invest in the job classes, the more broken the game would become. The job system makes FF5 and Ff Tactics an absolute joy to play
