Please welcome award-winning director and designer Thomas Mahler to Sacred Symbols+. Mahler is the co-founder of Moon Studios, the team behind the Xbox-aligned Ori series, and is currently championing their newest project, the ARPG No Rest For the Wicked. In a wide-ranging conversation, Thomas talked to me (Colin) about a variety of topics that will be fascinating to students of the industry. How has his emphasis on obsessiveness and hard work paid off in his career? Is crunch a natural byproduct of caring? How does Moon operate with a fully-remote team, with more than 90 people spread across 43 (!) countries? What was it like working with Microsoft as a second party, and why didn't Moon embrace the potential of being purchased outright? Why is the Metroidvania genre so special, and why are Metroidvanias so difficult to make? How much should new games cost? Are subscription services destroying game devs' ability to make money? All of that -- and more! -- on the other side of the play button.

Damn, nice get Colin! Looking forward to this one

Wall bouncing in WW1

I was just thinking of the Ori series. And No rest for the wicked.

Dante B

God I wish we could get Ori on PS5. Would love to 100% again for the plat. Got in on No Rest For the Wicked early access on Steam. Great foundation. Waiting for 1.0 now though.

Nathan McManus

"Right", I love when collin mirrors who he's interviewing, it's such an interesting technique to see, I wonder is it a conscious effort or something that just happens automatically now.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

I also got No Rest For The Wicked when it came out. It was really good but obviously rough around the edges. I think I'll try again when that big update comes out soon.

Chris Strommer

Hell yeah! As a fellow Austrian, I knew Thomas and Colin would hit it off! I was looking forward to this conversation! Super thankful for this interesting talk, guys!

Misanthropic_Altruist

Good get, man. Moon is one of the most talented and consistent studios out there. “No Rest for the Wicked” is one of the most enjoyable games I’ve played and actually wanted to continue playing uninterrupted, for some time. Really looking forward to the full release. Love this show. Keep up the awesome work!

PairOfShuse

Great interview - it was nice seeing a developer actually being candid. Would like to see him on again

Joshua wells

You should talk to Thomas more regularly. This was such an easy listen.

Wesali

Wow can't wait to listen to this one. Nice one Colin!

Guybrush Threepwood

Great Great interview and episode, Colin and Thomas. Thank you Thomas for doing this. Really loved the story about how they told you it would be your chance to make Mario 3.

Cameron Sturre

This was a really great episode. Conversation flowed really organically and I felt you two developed really good rapport. Love it.

Garry

This was a fantastic conversation Colin,Thomas has amazing points and seems like a great guy. The best sacred symbols + in a long time

Tim

As an audio only listener you can't convince me that this isn't Lockemort!

Pianopower

You are right Colin, I don’t give a shit about the “games used to be more expensive” argument. Cool, that was the 90’s where a fucking burger didn’t cost $20. I don’t care about that argument unless that person is also acknowledging that purchasing power hasn’t increased but gone down, but that never happens. You just say “yea I get it that people are struggling” and proceed to make your point anyway. An election was lost due to people starting to go crazy about the economy and how is not reflecting people’s pain and struggles, and it’s getting worse, and you think people wanna hear about “well actually, games need to be more expensive 🤓”. Sure, I’ll give a shit and hear you out when owning house stops being a pipe dream, but until then? I could care less, and I don’t have faith in companies removing MTX if the price increase. That just won’t happen.

Sami Rocklynn

Excellent episode. Love Ori 1 & 2. Amazing gameplay, art and music.

Unemployable troon

Sounds like you’ve got other things you need to figure out besides video games bro

Pianopower

*sees username* Right, color me surprised thats how you reply. What a shocker !

Unemployable troon

Maybe if you spent less time crying and whining like a child you’d have the means to afford the luxury’s you want…. Which seems to be day 1 new video games and a literal children’s toy (switch 2). I don’t think many people are going to feel sorry for you with the attitude you have

Dante B

A sixth grade understanding of fundamental economics at best.

Pianopower

Again, what a shocker. Bravo, assumptions and assumptions on top of invalidation. Keep it coming DOGE! Im having my coffee and need to burn some more neurons this morning

Unemployable troon

Assumptions based on a continued pattern. you’re clearly worried and probably rightfully so about getting priced out of your favorite or only hobby, and I’d probably feel bad for you if you dropped the entitled man baby attitude.

Pianopower

bro, stop projecting and talking to me. I already know exactly how you are gonna talk to me, so why bother? And what pattern? commenting for the last 2 or 3 episodes? Thats what you call a "pattern of whining?" lmao. But anyway, keep talking shit, its pretty funny actually. Im waiting for you to land one truth out of your stupid ass assumptions, and so far you only got half of one right . Not gonna tell you which one, that wouldnt be fun

Unemployable troon

Yes whining for 2-3 weeks in a row would constitute a pattern of whining. I hope you like 80$ games because they’re coming

Trevor

This was fucking awesome. What a great interview, Col. It's a busy time and a busy life, but someday I think you'll love Ori!

Jordan Falduto

what the fuck, this turned out to be far beyond my expectations. exceptional conversations.

Dante B

But but but he paid twenty dollars for a hamburger therefore games should be cheaper! Or something!

Unemployable troon

His mind is going to be blown when/if he discovers how much cheaper making a hamburger at home is

Susan B. Anthony Bourdain

Disposable income has gone up for the median US household over the last 30 years. The increased cost of healthcare and some essential goods have outpaced wages, so it *feels* worse in some ways, but it just isn’t. After paying for essentials, families in the US have more extra money to spend today than we did 30 years ago. Purchasing power has gone up, not down.

Lou skuntt

Sacred + coming though with some killer content again 👌

Nuke

Great interview Colin, keep it up!

Nuke

Maybe don’t go get $20 burgers anymore? Make one at home, way cheaper.

Kendal

Great convo, good work Colin

Unemployable troon

But can you name a video game that’s worth the cost of FOUR hamburgers? I don’t think I’d pay four hamburgers for a video game either

Benji_B2sick

Locke once the anti depressants kick in.

JR

Really enjoyed that interview, Thomas Mahler was a fucking fantastic guest. Good job Colin.

Gooch Gobbler

Borderline disrespectful to not play the Ori games before having this guy on. Get over the OCD Colin! You love replaying games, just replay it when it comes to PS for the precious trophies. Some of my favorite games ever, so excited for No Rest for the Wicked full release. Great interview regardless

Ahlickaloo

Owning a Switch 2 is a human right!

Hashim Barakat

I hope we will get the ori on PlayStation soon.

Vince

Right? What’s the count of this word

whY Be

Such a great interview! Thank you!

Drewbuntu

The old guard didn’t retire… they got sick of bureaucracy and started their own thing. Big difference. One is a natural cause and would be poor planning and mentoring the other is an indictment on the consolidation of gaming companies
