The Last of Us (HBO) Review Discussion and Spoilercast (S2, E2) | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 447

As widely expected, episode two of The Last of Us' second season on HBO brought with it the series' most notorious moment. Indeed, it's the event which resonates through The Last of Us: Part II video game in particular, driving forward its epic (and often challenging) narrative. But this episode brings with it quite a list of changes, too, some major and others more subtle. The result is an episode some of us loved, while others left feeling... well... a tad bit befuddled. Is HBO handling The Last of Us' vital emotional beats properly? Until we see this season through to the end, that remains to be seen. But for one of us, anyway, skepticism is starting to creep in.

Incredible episode. Really loved the new addition of the zombie horde defense action scene with Tommy and respect they actually had the balls to hit a Joel in one on only the 2nd episode🏌🏌🏌

One of the best episodes I’ve TV I’ve seen for a long time. They absolutely nailed it.

Don’t understand the Jackson hang up….if anything them leaving now post attack is even more egregious and selfish now that the town is in ruins..

"Sweet, they 'Game of Throne'd' this!" Killing the best character at the end of season 1 in Game of Thrones was different, because they left us with many, many "best characters" to watch after that. Depending on you feel about Bella Ramsay, the Last of Us season 2 left us with , maybe one such character. Quite different, imo and I'm not a fan of the comparisons.

Gene elevates. Micah maximizes. Dustin completes. And Colin, it's going to be okay we're here for you.

Thats the point though. It will look incredibly stupid narrative wise for Tommy to take a bloater on 1v1 to save his wife, yet will dip out on her immediately after to chase down his brothers killer.

I think it’s very obvious why they made changes. In the game Dina accompanies Ellie on her rampage solely because she likes Ellie, there is no relationship with Joel in the game. The show has done a great job of creating a bond between Dina, Ellie and Tommy back to Joel - it was a great choice. Even having Jessie present elevates Joel’s connections back to everyone and their motivations to head to Seattle. There is nothing wrong with the battle, it was unbelievably well shot and directed - I also think it really helps build the connection between Tommy and Maria / which will come into play when Tommy decides to leave.

Sam

Tommys motivation is also not lessened by him not being present / it’s his brother? They show the level of their relationship by Tommy’s reaction in the radio room when they can’t contact Joel, his stakes in Joel’s death couldn’t have been raised - it’s his brother. Dina’s and Jessie’s certainly could’ve and were.

Man folks, I really hope the conversation of these reviews moves beyond "Well, this is different from the game". This isn't the game. It's an adaptation, in a different medium, inspired by the game. So like, yeah, let's talk about how it relates to the game in broad strokes, but it would be awesome to actually critique the show AS IF IT'S A SHOW, which in fact, it is. I'm so glad Micah is here to audibly roll her eyes at some of the conversation. Seems like the crew was pretty soft on this episode, which to me seems CERTIFIABLY INSANE. This was an S-tier episode of TV, from acting to writing to cinematography to epic battles and set pieces. I'm blown away at the level of quality on display here. These "it was mid" comments, like what are we even talking about here, lol. Sometimes it feels like we are collectively too jaded.

Great episode. The show will be different than the game always and it’s ok. GOT was different than the books and everyone loved it.

I have a feeling they're not gonna have Mel be pregnant at all

It's just another argument for why indulging in revenge is so pointless and reckless....also gives more context for Maria leaving him.

2026-10-06 19:00 Just go watch the cutscenes on YouTube if you want the video game. I can’t deal with all the whining about minor changes to the game. It’s an adaptation. This was one of the best episodes of television I’ve ever seen and Colin is just being a baby about it. Sucks he couldn’t enjoy this because we rarely get episodes of television this exhilarating.

I’ve been trying to word this correctly without sounding like a total dick and I really want it to be constructive feedback: Bu can Gene not be included in these reviews, firstly it was sold as Colin, Micah and Dustin which I was on board (sad no Chris). I’m sure Gene is - great guy and friend etc. but he just derails conversations constantly. One example is Dustin asked Colin a really good question at the start about how people don’t see Abby as crazy and before Colin could even respond Gene jumps in to tell us how YouTube creators that he follows agree with Dustin. Then he goes off saying how Colin and him should do a 10hr podcast on all the games etc. I’m sorry but I’m here for sacred symbols hosts to discuss the biggest video game tv show ever, not Gene park updating me on how the YouTube creators he follows feel about the show 😂 I’m honestly not trying to be a dick but please can we not have Gene on SS content, he’s on enough shows already. I hope Colin can understand from the podcasts he listens to, I just want the core hosts that I’m a fan of and listen to week in, week out.

God forbid someone disagree or have a different opinion..... The show is average at best. You seem to think it's the holy grail and that's cool man happy for ya but that being said people are allowed to think for themselves.

An optimistic Bears fan

you do realize it's okay for people yo disagree right? why are so you bent out of shape because someone had a different opinion then you?

YaBoyStevieJay

Happy you enjoyed the podcast but it was Colin and Gene sucking each other off for 90 minutes while Colin lists out changes so he can whine about them. Don’t even know why Dustin and Micah were there since they were completely ignored and barely allowed to talk.

You do realize it’s okay to not comment on every comment saying the same thing right?

Totally agree with you! Hate it when a guest derails the flow of a conversation.
