Following the tumultuous and emotional events of the first handful of episodes, The Last of Us' second season on HBO finally travels to Seattle, the setting of much of the original game. Here, we get some action, sure. But we also get a lot of texture into important characters and events, some not covered in any great detail within the in-game world. Thus, prepare for a quieter (though not totally quiet) and more cerebral (though not entirely heady) episode of The Last of Us, as we pass the halfway mark of season two.

NUTSO JIMBO

Finger bangtastic episode

Deemac

Fantastic decision to give us more of a look at Isaac's backstory and give the character more screen time. Jeffrey Wright is a phenomenal actor so it's great to see more of him here, after him not appearing a huge amount in the game

Xenomorph Moriarty

Probably the episode I have the least complaints with so far. Not great fake guitar playing. She had the chord shapes but forgot to do anything convincing with her right hand.

DeadMail

Dustin if you need a new furnace make sure to get lots of quotes! I replaced mine last year. The first quote I got was nearly 10K! After hunting around I got the same one installed for 3,800. Good luck!

Johnny Lamotte

I don’t mean this as disrespectful but it’s so weird to me that Colin brought up so many small changes the first 3 episodes yet he didn’t have much opinion about the change of Ellie’s attitude towards the pregnancy. Like.. that’s a huge change and he seemed to have no comment at all??? I don’t get it. I think that change is huge. The whole vibe in the theater is different and I’m just baffled how he had no comment after the last three episodes lol Props to Micah for atleast bringing it up but the vibe change is a definite problem for me (my opinion). I don’t mind if anyone thinks differently it’s just weird that Colin had no comment at all about it. That’s all.

Beef Burka

yeah, the changes in this episode don't bother me as much, other than perhaps the pregnancy reveal in the game brought tension into Ellie and Dina's relationship instead of bringing them together. I guess we might not get shamblers either, since they were first encountered in the subway.

Uvula Smack

I’m pretty willing to bet the Judaism angle was toned down because the cohort that slobbering loves everything about this show probably wouldn’t like the Israel allegory.

Kyle Day

With there being no spores in this version, I’m not really sure how they could have done Ellie’s immunity reveal any different than her getting bit.

PairOfShuse

I find it odd when it’s said that oh I don’t care what the people look like, it’s more of the feel. The look of a character, their aesthetic, etc all contribute to the feel of the character. Then the comment that he doesn’t want to fuck Ellie….why didn’t go straight to that? You can want a character to look similar to the game character without it being a wanting to fuck them. Then to go on at the end of the podcast to talk about how Dina is cute/hot. Like, am I the only one that noticed all these hypocrisies and disjointed thought patterns? Then all the jokes about finger blasting aren’t too far but, let’s just say someone wanted Ellie to be more attractive in the show, that’s too far? I just don’t get it to be honest. Just a lot of cognitive dissonance. All the dialogue around the pregnancy was cringy as hell.

Matthew Cooper

Yes...all the pregnancy dialogue was terrible.. I was already not a fan of the young adult romance drama angle to the story in the game and so far it's even worse in the tv show. Combine tv show Ellie being much more immature with also desiring to be a man and you get some really cringe inducing dialogue there..

Matthew Skora

They’re getting so sloppy with the changes they’re making to the events in the story. Every change they’ve made has been for the worst, in my opinion. I really don’t understand what they’re doing here. Ellie and Dina’s relationship feels extremely forced and rushed in the show, and I just don’t feel the chemistry between the two actresses at all. This season is a huge downgrade from Season 1 so far for me.

Gino Fedele

The one thing I noticed about Colin from Knockback and other reviews is that he is very much into lore/world building over characters. So it made sense to me that he didn’t like the lore of the Seattle free roaming section being taken out but character moments being changed didn’t leave a huge impression. Though I do agree with you, there have been numerous character moment changes that really bring the TV show version down imo.

Johnny Lamotte

Ya agreed. I didn’t mean for my comment to sound harsh. I was more just baffled but ur def right

Joe Gonz

Also Dina isn't Jewish in the show so it wouldn't make sense

Gino Fedele

It is a weird feeling that this episode managed to give me the highest high of the show and the lowest low. The interrogation scene between Isaac and the Seraphite seemed in a league of its own compared to a lot of what we are given in both seasons. I thought it was brilliantly written and directed and portrayed the essential elements of the Seraphites and WLF into a condensed and compelling scene. Then we get “I’m pregnant” into good ol’ finger blasting. That certainly was the most baffling writing I have seen recently, not sure what got into Craig and Neil that they needed to have Dina and Ellie’s relationship be on the same tier as a throwaway CW show. So far, the season certainly has good moments and I don’t think it’s outright bad on the whole but I agree 100% with Dustin that every small change and idiosyncrasy in the show is starting to take its toll on the overall quality.

Your Boi Nicky V

Ellie and Dina are too weak a duo to lead the show. The whole premise of a couple of immature kids going up against a well trained army is ridiculous. Should have made more of Tommy and Jessie.

Your Boi Nicky V

Very true, feels like Marvel humour at times

NUTSO JIMBO

My biggest criticism is that the season doesn't feel dark/depressing enough so far. The Joel death was handled well but outside of that scene the rest of the show has felt quite light hearted and low stakes in comparison to the game. Maybe they were worried that it would put viewers off if it was too depressing? The pacing is also off, this season should have been more than just 7 episodes for sure.

Michael Thew

I think that is all she can play, I don’t think she’s grown much as an actress since game of thrones

Uvula Smack

Crazy. Every non villian character except the gay guy in season 1 got race swapped, and in season 2 the Jewish girl is no longer Jewish. What a coincidence lol.

Benthegamer

Great episode, one thing to note Colin it’s easy to miss but Tommy speaks of a horde moving through when he and Ellie are sniping the infected in TLOUP2. It’s very possible they introduce hordes in TLOUP3

GoofyCrazyRaccoon

I really think we’re getting Seattle day 1 for Abby in the next episode

Dustin's furry little wheener

I actually liked this episode a lot more than the previous episode. Still, the game is much better, but I'm liking it so far!

Bogey

I honestly think the main reason for the spore change is they couldn’t get it to work on screen. I’d imagine showing a bunch of floating killer particles in certain areas in live action would be hard to pull off

Derek Hart

I think the creators mentioned in one of the behind the scenes bits of season 1 that they decided against spores being a means of infecting people because it would be too effective. Almost everyone would be dead because it would be almost impossible to avoid breathing them in, even if you were outdoors.

Derek Hart

Yeah this season is still fine, but not nearly as good at portraying the story as Season 1 did. Kind of makes you wonder how many people that skipped playing the second game ( because of the leaks ) that are watching the show feel.

Cai

Just saw the episode 5 preview and the spores decision is now even more baffling?

Derek Alcott

Thank you for mentioning to not flush wipes, tampons and put grease in the drain. I work at a wastewater plant and those wipes cause issues with our pumps. One of our tanks is filled with the plastic pieces from tampons. We call them p***y whistles.

Keith Mc Carthy

I duno if its the direction shes been giving or if its bad acting but I think Bella Ramsey is not doing a great job as Ellie. Its like theres no passion or anger in her anymore, seem like shes kinda forgotten why she wants to kill Abby in the first place. And the whole sex/im guna be a dad scene just doesn't fit right with the way she should really feel. Why isnt Dina freaking out that Ellie is immune!!! That should clearly be a bigger issue than her being pregnant

Black Detective in Dexter

Can someone explain the "I'm gonna be a dad" line to me? I just don't get it. Ellie is a female lesbian. She doesn't identify as a man. Or did they change the character to non binary for the show? Do lesbians with children often call themselves "mom and dad"? I assumed most lesbian couples with children just consider themselves to be both moms. The line just took me out of the show completely. I was like "uhhh, no Ellie, you're not going to be a dad. You're not a dude." It was super weird.

CriiWolf

It's a fucking joke dude.

CriiWolf

Why did such a throw away line get you so worked up bud?

Black Detective in Dexter

I wish you well sir. Maybe re-read this entire thread and you'll realize you're the only one being hostile here. Have a nice day, sport.

Black Detective in Dexter

Your initial response didn't really invite a nuanced conversation. Thank you for proving me right with your latest response. I would recommend you stop commenting now, unless you wish to further embarrass yourself. Again, take care sir. All the best.

CriiWolf

Sure thing boss. Answer my question though? Why did a throwaway joke need such heavy explanation for you?

Black Detective in Dexter

Sure, I'll answer your question. I was genuinely asking if Ellie was actually non binary in the show, and if that was a change they made to the game, as I found it odd that she said she was going to be a dad. My other question was if lesbian couples with children often have one of them refer to themselves as a dad or if they both come themselves moms. It took me out of the scene because Ellie is a female, so referring to herself as a dad seemed strange to me, especially since the character identifies as a female in the games. It was a genuine question and I don't think it was in any way hostile or hateful or wrong of me to have that opinion. And then your first comment swears at me in a hostile manner. Yet you wonder why I wouldn't want to engage in a conversation with someone that has clearly already made up their mind about me, and is immediately defensive for whatever reason. So, that answers your question. Again have a nice day, dude.

CriiWolf

That didn't answer shit. But Ok. Have a pleasant night, gentle sir.

Black Detective in Dexter

Sorry you didn't find my answer satisfactory. I will have a pleasant night, about to get into some Days Gone. You have a good night too. Happy gaming!

Theotokos Respecter

I'm just happy the delivered one thing I was expecting. Another abhorrent sex scene LMAO

Cruz Ibarra

Sorry to hear about your Doggy 😔 hope she will be better

CriiWolf

Does the huge group that chases Abby in the beginning of the game not count as a horde? I'm confused because people seem be to forgetting that moment.

Zero Karisma

I liked this episode quite a bit. Think the pregnancy scene was a big nothing burger for me. Didn’t even think about until after the show until I started reading people make a big deal about it. I thought the music store scene was special. One of the few times that the show was actually better than the game.

Hunter Flaherty

Im wondering when colon is going to finally admit that the story for this game and second season is really just not very good. Its not like awful but its not good

Daddy T

I don’t think it’s a throwaway line when it completely changes the tone of the scene from the game, which was much better, this season fucking sucks man, don’t get so worked up trying to defend it

Black Detective in Dexter

Yeah it didn't come off as a joke line to me. You should see the comments this guy deleted. He was crashing out...hard.

Daddy T

Typical Druckmann dick rider, can’t take a lick of criticism

CriiWolf

Lol I didn't delete anything. Whoever moderates here did. I didn't say anything crazy just a few cuss words that hurt old boys feelings.

CriiWolf

Hahahahah I love that you got right to the dick riding conclusion from such a small interaction hahaha you lot are fucking delusional

Daddy T

Funny that you have cry in your name lol, fits the bill.

CriiWolf

Such a clever response. I wish I was as witty as you.

Daddy T

I’ll bet, you seem to be a few cards short of a full deck.

Gooch Gobbler

Dude it aint that deep, gay people joke about that shit all the time. "I'm the dude in the relationship" stuff like that. Usually there is a more masculine and a more femme person. I'm not saying it was a great scene or anything

Stonehorn

Why do you think everyone else must agree with you? The second game is even better than the first, and aside from some nitpicks I have, the show is excellent.

Stonehorn

You get that not every line in a game or show is meant to be serious, right? Some things are just jokes. Grow up.

Stonehorn

It was clearly a joke, and you guys are upset because because it alludes to gender, and that upsets you because you don’t have the ability to think critically. It was very, very clearly a joke.

Stonehorn

You didn’t criticize anything, btw. Im not even sure you understand what that word means from this conversation

Stonehorn

You understand that a game can go much further in depth than a game, right? Like, I understand what you’re saying, and agree the game is better, but there’s just no way to go as deep in a 7 episode season.

B00ch

Game is too long
