The Last of Us (HBO) Review Discussion and Spoilercast (S2, E4) | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 451

Following the tumultuous and emotional events of the first handful of episodes, The Last of Us' second season on HBO finally travels to Seattle, the setting of much of the original game. Here, we get some action, sure. But we also get a lot of texture into important characters and events, some not covered in any great detail within the in-game world. Thus, prepare for a quieter (though not totally quiet) and more cerebral (though not entirely heady) episode of The Last of Us, as we pass the halfway mark of season two.

I’m enjoying listening to tv/movie critics judge the show a lot more and some have played the game. They criticize the show in a more thoughtful way as they just judge strictly based off the episodes while still talking about changes. Honestly it just seems like you guys wanna watch the game w/no remix then seeing it as a completely different medium and audience. Lou2 my favorite piece of media by far, the show is not and was never expecting it to but I can still enjoy a great remix.

Wondering if you guys watch the little behind the scenes things after each episode because some times you say things they cover in those such as the actor who plays Isaac being the same. It's only like 10 minutes and it adds some cool info. Also the gay pride stuff is from the game but you kept questioning if it has a deeper meaning. It may have, but it was also a game reference.

I’m enjoying it but the pregnancy reaction in show was awful and so so inferior to the source material

Loving this series! Something to add to the critiques about Abby's new bite this episode is that she also was bitten in S2 E1 or 2 on the torso by that stalker if I remember correctly. Proving it to be a bite from the infected wouldn't necessarily be iron-clad, but Ellie could've easily mentioned it when Dina was holding her up. And as always, the sets continue to have a fake look to them - kinda like how grass looks on fancy Nativity sets. The foliage sticks out so much, that I'm starting to think it could be more of a lighting issue than anything. But regardless of what is the continual cause of the show's sets feeling like a stage, it's a decent 2nd season, though I think season 1 was much better, and that the first and 2nd game are the far superior versons compared to the show.

Also, yeah, why in g God's fuck do they have no concern over dinas pregnancy after she told ellie? It comes off lame

I was listening to the audio version but had to swap to video for the end when I heard that Frisk made an appearance. What a cute little pooch.

Kody Kindig

Seen a picture of actress who plays Ellie on Bzz Lightyear and now I can't unsee it.

having been to seattle a few weeks ago and messed around at capitol hill, there's is a rather large convergence of pride there. there's even a street that's painted rainbow in the division. not sure what the reasoning of explicitly including capitol hill is, but that was at least accurate to the actual neighborhood or whatever you call a section of a major city.

"I'm going to look at every change through the lens of 'does it make the story better or not?', because if it doesn't make the story better, why are you changing anything?" This admission might capture entirely the issues with this review series. This seems like a really naive way to approach this. The answer to "why would you change anything?" is BECAUSE IT'S A TV SHOW ADAPTATION OF A VIDEOGAME. It's a 30 or 40 hour game being adapted into hour-long episodes. OF COURSE there will be changes. To quote a Colin-ism in my best Colin voice, "What don't you get?" I even think Colin has been moderating these conversations in a more balanced way since some of the feedback after episode 2, AND I think I also agree with some of the criticisms around pacing and they "I'm a dad" moment. But like, the decision about what to change is a LOT more complicated than just "is it better or worse than the game." To go even further, is the goal to make the story "better"? Is that even the goal of Neil or Craig? I would assume the goal is to skillfully capture and translate the overall narrative of the game along with the themes that the story explores and the questions it raises about the human experience. I have not seen a single change that detracts from any of that in a major way (thus far). I don't know. Just feels like these episodes continue to be a lot of griping. It's straight WILD to me that a show of this insane level of quality is being made about an IP that we deeply love and the main takeaway from these discussions is mostly a list of complaints. I don't get it. I would highly recommend the official HBO podcast with Neil and Craig that is hosted by Troy Baker, where they discuss deeply each episode, the choices and changes they made, and why they made them, to add more context to the LSM discussions.

To also offer positive feedback, I thought Colin's point about the news room segment and how it went a long way to demonstrate the actual TLoU gameplay in the show was a really inciteful observation.

Matt Hartzell

Fair point, but I think for Colin, with how intense he's been about comparing the show to the game, I'm not confident he's using the same lens as Neil / Craig. And agree to disagree on "change for change's sake", that's not the vibe or approach I get at all from the creators. But thanks for a thoughtful reply!

Is not a good show. Get over yourself
