It's me, Colin! Please welcome storied designer and friend David Jaffe back to Sacred+ for yet another appearance. It's been just over two months since we last did a Moriarty x Jaffe episode, and felt like like it was time to break the dry spell. This long-ranging, often-off-topic episode touches on a ton of items, including plenty of games talk. But the sentiment makes no sense. Shaking down means forcing someone to give money or concessions, often through pressure, manipulation, or threats. Putting another T-shirt or sticker on your store and saying “buy this if you want” has nothing to do with force, manipulation, or threats.

I get that. I’m just saying it doesn’t make sense as it implies he’s doing something shady or forcing us to buy merch, which he wouldn’t be doing. If he adds one more piece of merch or 1,000, that fact never changes. Is every store that adds a new product to its shelves “milking us”? Is Target “shaking us down” because they sell Switch 2’s now? Like, what are we even talking about here? A hidden fee or something like that is another story. This isn’t that. Does no one understand that these types of transactions are all completely voluntary?

Anyone who played Destiny 2 in the 2020-2023 era could have told Sony, Bungie was an absolute mess and Destiny 2 was not really the juggernaut success that the drive by puff pieces would've had you believe. Jim took the bait hook line and sinker, Sony clearly didn't do their due diligence. Everyone who played then knew the game was getting more Eververse centric, pay to win crept in the store, the seasonal model was stale already, Sunsetting was a disaster, they vaulted expansions people paid for, the new expansions were bringing back fewer players as they jacked up the prices for less content each time, they started charging for dungeons separately which used to be included in the expansions and the covid bump faded pretty quickly. Who would have thought Activision was right about Destiny and Bungie were the real villains.

It's different when brands are large conglomerates offering products vs personality driven, potentially parasocial, fan funded endeavours, when fans feel like they "need" to support their favourite content creators.

Pick a different analogy- a mom and pop shop adding a new product to their shelves is not shaking down their customers. This whole premise is just fundamentally nonsensical. I feel like Colin understands this but is just pandering to the portion of the audience that doesn’t let common sense get in the way of their extreme anti-capitalism.

Don’t agree with the Stream of consciousness being bullshit. Not everyone’s stream of consciousness is that good. Has to be ordered and written down. We need more stream of consciousness in films and games imo

I like Jaffe, but he is wrong about this. I go to a lot of conventions and collect comics, and there are quite a few Aloy cosplayers and the Horizon comics are popular and sell very well. Sony's marketing just isn't great, so most people just don't see how large the fandom really is.
