Sony's recent PlayStation-centric corporate presentation illustrated just how powerful their gaming vertical is. Indeed, PlayStation 5 has already generated more revenue for the company than PS1, PS2, and PS3 combined, and in the last five years, Sony has netted more in profit from gaming than it did in all 26 prior years the brand has existed, combined. Within their presentation was a lot of interesting data, quotes, anecdotes, and more to comb through, and we do that with a fine-tooth comb. We also wonder why the video presentation was so awkward, stilted, and choreographed. Can these people not speak extemporaneously and off-the-cuff? But we digress! Then, we get into other pertinent news of the week: Bungie's indefinite delay of Marathon, rumors of Sony's potential interest in Warner Bros., fresh PlayStation 5 and 6 handheld rumors, and more. Then, we end the show (as we always do) with listener inquiries. Is Hermen Hulst truly to blame for PlayStation's serious first party woes? When will Ghost Story's Judas launch? Is controller rumble and vibration an important component of our gameplay experiences? Will Colin's 100 hours in PowerWash Simulator translate to the real world?Timestamps:0:00:00 - Intro

A proper meaty, girthy episode this week

Cole Wallace

5 hour+ episode. This is what I’m talking about boys. 🔥

Joshua Jones

Nice I love the girthy ones lol

JustOkJeremy

If Colin references that bogus FF16 Xbox sales figure I will be so mad that I won’t really be mad it’s just a joke let’s relax it’s video games have a great weekend everyone

Adam

SO HAPPY WE GOT ANOTHER 5 HOUR LONG EPISODE 😭🔥❤️

Drew

Bogey

Shout out to Spitta

Dustin Furman

There is no mold. We’ve been redoing all the walls and working out the weak spots. Also have a dehumidifier running 24/7

demo_vol1

Another lengthy podcast 😛

Jason Rose

The Khmer Rouge joke just flying over the entire city. Looking forward to skipping 2 hours and 47 minutes of this podcast.

Joshua Jones

Colin use the black tip of soap and the use the green tip for everything else. Don't even look at the red tip.

KYisLife

Colin basically described an Alundra dream section

Girth Brooks

PS5 is AKSHUALLY doing wayy better than how people think! Better than all of history! Check out these numbers! The haters are wrong! 50% of those numbers come from PS4 tho Well yeah okay but yeah okay um this is still good tho

StewDog

Never underestimate girth

Emil M

I always love how Colin's been mentioning for years being a Currency fan. And I only know him through me being Lil Wayne fan, so was always like "damn, someone else knows Currency?"

TD

is this a Currency (rapper) lyric?

Trickster Mickster

The coffee side quest in Borderlands 3 needs to be studied on how to NOT write dialogue and structure a quest. It’s 20+ minutes of hack “don’t talk to me before I’ve had my cofeve” boomer Facebook memes with minimal combat. Actual torture.

David Kraytsberg

that David Lynch impression was a delight. I hope Chris knows how much we love these

Ole Boonless

Does Kojima even give a shit that I just platinumed Death Stranding?

ZombiesNJ

A podcast with girth means we’re getting our worth at LSM. Happy with that. All of you who want short and pithy podcasts are lacking in testosterone - go elsewhere. The man meat by the 3 provided here is exceptional! Great job fellas. 🤭🍆😆

Jordan campos

Sounds like it’s time for daddy Colin to get a koi pond. Give the frogs an outlet other then your pool.

Ryan

Colin continues to vastly overestimate the severity of power washing lol

Still think that Sony should avoid making games as a service, just like how they stopped making nhl, nba and nfl games, they saw more profit in the cuts for 0 cost off of the 3rd parties, then they did for nhl faceoff, nba and nfl gameday, there might not always be specifically cod or fortnite but there will always be third party If they wanted to dip their toes in they could’ve ported/remastered/remade uncharted 4s and tlou’s multiplayer in their remakes/remasters but they were inexplicably cut by a publisher that says they want to get into games as a service

Diddy’s Lube Guy

You liked the game too much, he’s probably not happy about that.

Antonio Rodriguez

Thanks for picking my question on vibrations guys!

Dustin's furry little wheener

And yet, I still believe Hulst would have done a better job so far if Jim Ryan hadn't been in charge all those years. Someone constantly whispering live-service in your ear, throwing Fortnite stats around like gospel, someone who only greenlights GaaS projects and always chooses them over single-player experiences—sure, you might be steering the ship, but you're doing it in the middle of a storm. We don’t know the full story, and on this point, I just don’t agree with Colin. Maybe Hulst has actually been trying to right the ship for a while now—we simply don’t know. Yes, Concord is on him. But Bungie, Fairgames, … those are clearly Jim Ryan’s blunders. And by the way, back when Don Mattrick was running Xbox, the focus was solely on him—not on whoever was heading Xbox Game Studios at the time, even though plenty of bad decisions were made there too. But here, people rarely talk about Jim Ryan, who clearly needed to go, and instead usually point the finger at Hulst, as if he alone dropped the ball. Anyway, I’m curious to see how Hulst will do during the PS6 era. Personally, I think he’ll do a much better job. We shall see…

Cloud

It's so funny hearing how important controller rumble is for the guys cause I turn that shit off at a system level lmao

Soulful Bison

Ps5 version of ghost has real nice rumble. If I remember correctly you can feel the foliage you are walking through

Diddy’s Lube Guy

The cloud gaming on PS5 and Portal is excellent for me. I happen to enjoy flicking through games like TV channels.

Deutschbag

Juneteenth doesn’t celebrate the emancipation proclamation its the day the last slaves found out they were freed which was way after the proclamation was signed - the last slaves to find out were in Galveston, TX.

LR INT Kid Buu

I use to do this shit, but I don’t know why but I got use to it and quite enjoy it now

Eisley

No Squall shall edge in the circle of wieners

Deli Dept.

On the topic of Xbox making that weird hybrid pc-console thing, I would like Colin and Cog have a special SS+ debating Microsoft new strategy, just an idea🤓

Guybrush Threepwood

"Best place to publish" - Dustin has a great point. Yes, it is the platform where you have a potentially HUGE player base to try your game. But you aslo have an equally huge pool of competition, wher the storefront is full of complete garbage, which makes your game almost invisible.

Adam Barnes

The girth comments make me uncomfortable

Diddy’s Lube Guy

You guys really have to slow it down with the girth comments. Be gentle, I’ve never had such a girthy podcast before and you’re my first.

Mr. Scott If You're Nasty

I mean they're doing awesome, which is crazy because the product has gone down in value proposition this generation. I honestly think some of these businesses should be studied. This is like product momentum. PS5 isn't doing so great because of what it offers, but because how great the PS4 was. In my humble opinion anyways. It does remind me of iPhones, which aren't as good as other phones on the market but continued to dominate. In my workspace I hear this all the time, id switch but all my stuff links up.

Diddy’s Lube Guy

Sony California is ESG maxxing, now taking UN money. Full ideological capture. The results include Concord and Marathon. These are what they would call features and not bugs.

Deemac

Clearly all the people around the top had a part to play with the mistakes of this generation - it's not like one of Ryan or Hulst just signed off on things without any consultation. But I agree that I'd still like to see what Hulst can do going forward now, as he's clearly no dummy when it comes to games as his track record as a dev shows. Mistakes have been made and yet Sony have been fortunate to remain in a very strong position, so they're well placed to learn from those mistakes and close out this gen strongly with the games from major studios due to finish out this console cycle, and bring that into the PS6 gen. Feels like Colin has just wrote him off already. Maybe he's absorbed some of those Jaffe thoughts also from their most recent conversation, where he had a bizarre take that Europeans can't come up with good ideas for Sony 🙄

Deemac

It's really bizarre. When I was like 15 I was out power washing my parents big yard at home, there's nothing to it lmao I know he says he's not handy at all or anything, but the one thing he says he does enjoy is working outside, so that makes it even stranger

Alex Weiss

Colin’s nerd voice of “32 ROPs” reminded me so much of JD in Grandmas Boy😂

Shortsoptional

Same. Feels like it’s ripe for Sacred X Duke on the topic.

Josh McKinney

My name is JOSH McKinney, not John!

Pan Ic

The most exciting news always come from xbox lol.

Vladimir Grabbinmikov

It’s a great thing Colin and Chris can finish Prey so they can judge Judas accordingly when it finally releases 😂💯😭😂💯😭😂💯😭😂💯😭😭😂😭😂😂🍆🍆🍆

Jason Rose

Get someone that loves you as much as Hideo Kojima loves himself

Jason Thompson

There’s plenty of games on Steam that you can only get it there. Xbox would have to always be cheaper sales than Steam. Also Steam would know the device it got purchased and downloaded on. Their might be an agreement where Microsoft gets a small cut on anything bought on Steam from the device

BamAHamYum

The Kojima ball-washing is getting out of hand. If Neil Druckmann—or literally anyone else in the industry—said something as pretentious as “I changed the game because people liked it too much,” they would be ripped apart instantly.

Phil

"Fun Dungeon"

Aram

Steam would never give up any revenue it make zero sense.

Envydiel

The ps4 conversation is the same as the PC market being primarily on 1060s or 1660s until they'll be forced to upgrade when Windows 10 is no longer supported.

Envydiel

Yeah but Kojimbo can get away with it because there's only 1 Kojimbo.

Save The Game Media

What incentive does Steam have to do that? They could just say - hey, buy this on the web browser, we’ll give you an extra 5% off if you do. Come back and play it here Then Xbox gets nothing

Chris Evans

Honestly, all this talk of consoles disappearing and the gaming industry changing completely has me starting to think that Microsoft may have lost the battle but set themselves up to win the war in the long run.

Walk Forward Cutscene

But important to remember that there were still slaves in Union states well after Juneteenth

Drew's Dew

Take two definitely wanted a 80$ standard price with borderlands to justify a 90 or 100$ gta 6.

Glen Yelenovic

Missed opportunity to say Dustin was Gommaged

Kevin Cooper

I'll never be able to listen to "One Is The Loneliest Number" by Three Dog Night in the same way again... 🌭🌭🌭

james glenn roten

Colin, Sony has been working with WB since TLoU2. Probably even before that! Remember, The Last of Us Part 1 had a Mortal Kombat 2 poster in the game! Can't just have it in there as an "Easter egg" or "homage." Gotta go through all the normal processes in order to even have it in the game lol. 👀

Aaron

Strange hearing Chris’s thoughts on rumble. If yo didn’t turn off vibration playing shooters with controller you were fumbling. M+kb doesn’t use rumble. Just handicapping yourself playing with controller vibration in multiplayer

Joshua

Colins not taking into account the fact Xbox hardware sales are already dead and dying. Therefore sales through their hardware platforms are declining and dying with it. The second they went 3rd party the long term future of Xbox live was also cut short. If the money from sales and Xbox live through their xbox store were their current main focus going forward they'd already be fucked. Without PC like functionality on future Xbox hardware the machines would be dead on arrival regardless, and their wouldn't be sales at all if the console is doa. The PC functionality is it's only selling point, otherwise there is literally no reason to buy it compared to a PlayStation portable device / Steam deck/ PS6. Theyd rather you have game pass or buy it on steam for 70% of the money then you don't buy it at all.

Joshua

As a mouse and keyboard main, rumble is one of the few things controller has going for it for me personally.

Allen Crenshaw

Shout out to the Wavebird. My controller GOAT.

Bailey Callis

I think it's genuinely kind of insane and a bit worrying how long it's been since we've had any substantive news on wolverine

Bailey Callis

If anyone's earnt this level of pretentiousness, it's Kojima. This is literally his brand 😆

Bailey Callis

He's always had a notable subtle distain for xbox 😆

Bailey Callis

Essentially true, but as Colin goes on and on about, I believe third party's are actually stronger and higher quality now than last gen, and a ton of people Essentially will only play third party content on their playstation, so the games almost may as well be first party. Especially so with Microsoft migrating over, and offering even less than ever now exclusive wise

Drew's Dew

Selling hardware is materially profitable when its a niche (Rog, Steam deck). (Smallish companies) When you mass market a console you sell at loss or close to a loss to gain material profit on the software. It’s a mass hardware because it’s cheap (loss). Xbox strategy is an exit strategy of the console market. They are probably doing this to shut down everything that is in a console and make it available in their strong ecosystem the pc /pc hybrid.

Kid-Organic

2:42:28 that accent is actually called “mid-Atlantic”. Ask ChatGPT about it. 🤓

Mr. Scott If You're Nasty

I hear you. I'd argue Sony can't keep this up long term because eventually the market will react. Microsoft, at least games wise, offers little incentive to buy their product. Service wise though? An absolute ton. Gamepass, Play Anywhere, Steam integration (rumors anyways), free upgrades (GoW reloaded for example). It should be interesting going forward

Bailey Callis

Yeah don't get me wrong, I've got an Xbox too, and gamepass is sublime, I'm playing Xbox a lot, its genuinely a much better value proposition than anything on Sony, the general consumer doesn't seem to care though haha
