Welcome back to Constellation! It's true, I'm not Dagan (Dustin here), so I don't have a poem, gimmick, or some sneaky way to not really write a description. A normal ass description will have to do this week. With that said, we had a great show with a one-of-a-kind lineup! Jaffe asks about summer movies we're excited for. Chris wonders how we organize (or lack thereof). Finally, I have been reflecting on the work of Hideo Kojima with the imminent release of Death Stranding 2, and wondered how the crew felt about his games, and the idea of the auteur game director. Please enjoy!

Should Dustin refer to himself as “The Duster” when he’s filling in for Dagan? Mr. Dusty if he’s nasty.

This line up made my tip a little sticky. Keep it up guys.

start a infection

I love that jaffe was on this, I was only 5 years old in 1998 and shouldn’t have been playing twisted metal anyway but knew that 3 was garbage and it was cause it wasn’t made by singletrac but by 989 and that was the first time I learned that who makes the games mattered and why I knew that Jak would be better than crash 4, ratchet better than enter the dragon fly, rock and better than guitar hero 3 and so on

Asique Alam

Perhaps the best group in constellation yet they should keep this for 2 weeks straight

Pianopower

transfer Hideo Kojima writing skills and style into another person, and said person will always fail writing class lol. The dude has fantastic ideas, innovative gameplay design (imo), but his writing is atrocious , heavy handed, and full of "Tell, dont show". His creativity stat is maxed out, but he should probably put some points into writing. Or hire an editor. I loved Death Stranding, but I couldnt play it without rolling my eyes every 2 seconds. Its anime bullshit trying sooo hard to be high art and mean something. Colin and Chris having disdain for anime and Kingdom Hearts while loving Kojima? that will never not be hilarious lol

Daddy T

There is a huge field of difference between Kingdom Hearts and Death Stranding lmao

Pianopower

ohh there is a gap, but no , I dont think is THAT big lol. But yes, KH takes the cake.

LR INT Kid Buu

This is an goated line up, three of my favorites hosts super excited to listen.

Everything Jaffe said about Kojima was 100% the truth, and I say that as someone with MGS as my favorite series of all time.

Dante's Alighieri Hogs

I'm *almost* saddened not to hear Micah's batshit opinions and habits on this one...

NeO JD

Mr Dusty if he’s musty?

Guybrush Threepwood

As a massive Jaffe enjoyer, super into this cast, about 2/3rd thru this only but its great, thank you guys.

I think Kojima gets a lot of personal credit as the best part of his games is often the story, which I think he mostly writes himself. That said, I do agree with Jaffe, even though I'd say MGS is perhaps my favourite IP on this earth. Dude believes his own hype way too much and has a hard on for Hollywood, bringing in Kiefer over David Hayter being the perfect example.

Skippy

Dustin, come on man. You easily could have at least done “poem, gimmick, or some other limerick.” SMH gotta step up your game, Dusty Boy

Dustin's furry little wheener

I really like Jaffe, even though I often disagree with him — just like Colin often does. And that's totally fine. But I have to admit, I found it pretty painful to hear how he talks about Hideo Kojima. I mean, who gives a fuck if Kojima sees himself as a god? The man has been part of this industry since the very beginning, and he’s still operating at the highest level. Not only that, he's constantly pushing boundaries and trying new things — and he makes it work. Let’s not forget, he elevated Konami to a much higher standard. Sure, Konami thought he took too long to finish his games, but come on — if you think Kojima works slowly, you're fucking crazy. After leaving Konami, the guy went out and built a whole new studio from the ground up, released Death Stranding — a unique and bold game — and now he’s already back with a sequel that honestly looks fucking awesome. The man is clearly a workaholic, and he operates at the top of his game. It's obvious he's steering the studio in the right direction. He doesn't just talk the talk — he walks it. He does it. He’s inspired by film and games, and you see those influences everywhere in his work. Just look at Snake. Yes, there are clear nods to John Carpenter, but even Carpenter himself has no issue with Kojima borrowing inspiration — and Kojima made it entirely his own. Bottom line: I don’t see anything bad or malicious in Kojima. That’s just who he is. He’s eccentric, sure, even crazy — but in a good way. I just found Jaffe’s reaction kind of odd. I get what he was trying to say, and in many other situations I might agree with that kind of critique — but not when it comes to Kojima.

Jacob Lesperance

Just seen 28 years later at the theater. Highly recommend

Diddy’s Lube Guy

It’s the sourest of grapes by a guy who HATES that another dev has real art cred.

Etikaiele (JSD)

I am not that far yet, but I probably agree with Papa J on Kojima.

Snowbound

Daddy T? Come on man

Jacob

another good summer movie to keep an eye on is weapons. from the same director as barbarian a few years back and the recent trailers look very intriguing!

Angel

Yeah, it was real odd how upset he sounds about him and his games

Hey, I was just listening to the podcast and while I clearly have no clue what’s actually going on in your wrist, Dustin, it sounds like you may have had a scaphoid fracture in your wrist that never healed. You really should have that evaluated because the blood supply to the scaphoid sucks and the bone will die and then the wrist will collapse and lead to arthritis. There may be ways to re-vascularize the bone if you catch it soon enough. Get it checked out! I am an orthopedic surgeon and while I am not a hand specialist and don’t want to scare you, at least get an X-ray. That would show it and then you could discuss options. Way better to deal with it now at 30 than at 50!

Kh is so much more cringe and convoluted.

The Duster is incredible i hope he reads this.

Jacob Lesperance

David had his glass of haterade full for this one.

Cotten

Love this combination great show!

I think Jaffe's point was that he does think Kojima is great, but (a) there's many more people involved in the creation of his games that get summarily ignored with the assumption that it is only Kojima who comes up with EVERYTHING in his games (he doesn't, he borrows mechanics from other games and probably gets ideas from other people on his team), and (b) it frequently veers from "honoring one of the greatest minds of the gaming industry" to "full-blown idol worship." The man has done some brilliant work, but he's not a god. That's sort of a broader generalization about how you shouldn't idolize people, though—at the end of the day we all shit the same color and all that.

Ryan

Colin and jaafe need a regular show for LSM but I’m also worried that would take the magic out of it

Minji of NewJeans

This trio is exactly what I needed this week 😂

Thanks Jaffe for saying what most people are afraid to admit… this whole Kojima shitting gold and is the 2nd coming of Jesus is annoying. Had Ubisoft be the one to release death stranding, it wudve automatically being label trash; since it’s kojima, it must be good., there must be some deeper meaning my ass. To hear some people say that death stranding 2 is “most beautiful “ game on d console …..cmon, had anyone took the time to admire/appreciate the environment of AC shadows…. All this kojima ass kissing is pitiful.

Ryan

Underrated trio

I have a perspective as a Concept Artist in the game industry. I actually think some people undersell how important it is to have a great director with a vision. I’ve worked on plenty of projects and the difference between working on a project with a good director be a mediocre one is staggering. Sure is artist, programmers, etc… are designing the look and feel of the game but the quality of the final product can be completely different depending on the vision. Despite having all the same workers on each individual project.
