And If Anything, Then There's Your Sign of the Times | Sacred Symbols, Episode 366

For the first time ever, PlayStation is publishing one of its own games on Xbox. The new port comes in the form of 2024's smash-hit multiplayer game Helldivers 2 from second party studio Arrowhead, and though Sony has a long-but-silent history of bringing games to other consoles -- there was a Wipeout game on N64, after all, and the likes of Death Stranding and MLB: The Show have already migrated to Xbox via intermediaries -- never before have they acted as publisher. Is this a one-off, or a move that could signify a new strategy? Will Xbox players conditioned to Game Pass put their money where their mouth is? Are single-player exclusives next? Then: Neil Druckmann announces he's done with The Last of Us on HBO, instead turning his full attention back to Naughty Dog, while it sure does sound like Sony-owned team Firesprite is openly hiring for a PlayStation 6 project. After some other news, we get into what we're playing before ending the show as we always do, with six questions, comments, concerns, thoughts, and ideas from our audience. What are our ruminations concerning Xbox's recent layoffs and cancellations? Will the PS5 era be looked back upon as a generation of wasted potential? How do we feel about the Stop Killing Games initiative in Europe? Are some listeners intentionally exposing their wives to Sacred Symbols in order to facilitate a divorce? Follow the hosts! Colin's way of saying "Fanta" is correct. Chris is wrong. They used to have the commercial with an official jingle with the name in it. It's pronounced the way Colin said it.

Jamie

I feel like if Colin was aware Halley Gross was leaving the HBO show as well he would have had more to say.

goated ass timing. im mowing my grandmothers yard which hasn't been touched in about a year and doing it with a push mower that has a built in mulcher. it's easily an acre and a half so it's nice to have something to listen to like 5 minutes after finishing defining duke.

Death Stranding 2 is an all timer sequel. No other game has had me laughing harder than I ever have in any other game then tearing up moments later. Only Kojima could make something so bonkers but also addicting and heartfelt. When I'm not playing it I'm constantly thinking about it and listening to the incredible soundtrack I just wanna be in that world

I think you guys should’ve listened to the hbo podcast for the last of us show. You guys would hear Craig and Neill talk about their collaboration on the show and that all of the “changes” to the show Neill signed off on actually. I really think Neill is just wanting to focus on the next games first and prioritize them since he’s game producer first.

Deemac

Yeah I think it's as simple as Intergalactic probably being 2 years away, and Neil want to fully focus on finishing this project and delivering a high quality game like ND are known for. Feels like a lot of people are reading a lot into this tbh

I'm so apprehensive about the PS6. Like I just cant picture why I would buy one. You know all the games for years after will be cross generation. So I'm just not sure what my PS5 Pro will lack that the PS6 has to get $700-$800 out of me. I felt the same about Switch 2. First Nintendo console I didn't buy at launch. They are asking too much money and providing way less at launch than ever before.

Buff_Cupcake

That opening salvo about the cap was horrifically awkward. I was wincing. Was Dustin joking? wasn't he? was he half-joking and took it too far? We'll never know, but my brother in christ it made things weird for a bit. It was like that 'Funny how?' scene in Goodfellas only missing the bit where Joe Pesci caves. Bad vibes.

I would love Everybody’s Golf on something like the Switch/Switch 2. I could see it being fun to chip away at, portably. On Xbox, however, I would question whether the potential audience there is large enough to make the effort worth it, sales wise.

Directional Joy

It is a damn shame, the complications of PS3 emulation. To Colin’s point of Sony releasing games on other console’s, only after it having exclusive shelf life of a year & a 1/2 or so, I agree, but see Sony’s past software as a missed opportunity at not just sales but awareness (ex. Tokyo Jungle, Escape Plan, etc.)

Directional Joy

I completely hear you on feeling hesitant at the proposition of buying into the next generation of expensive hardware (right there with ya), but to be fair to Nintendo… The Nintendo 64 had Super Mario 64 & Pilotwings at launch, so we have had worse launch lineups before. But, understand if the 3rd party offerings on Switch 2 felt like ports of games released long past. 🫡

Directional Joy

This is completely speculation, on my part, but I would not be surprised if Druckmann’s motivation for returning to Naughty Dog had more to do with supporting the company where his bread was buttered, trying his damndest to avoid any firings (considering the current climate, don’t think Sony isn’t 👀), and less to do with The Last of Us (TV) and it’s current reception. 🤷‍♂️

Directional Joy

From Wave Race 64 to Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance, we were swimming in awesome water effects. Wind Waker is great but, personally, I remember being impressed with the scope of travel more so than the water’s behavior.

N64 launched at $199 CAD. With inflation its just under $400 today. The Switch 2 with Mario Kart bundle is $699 CAD... Also Mario 64 and Pilotwings are both much better games than Mario Kart World. Also i took less than 2 month wait to get Wave Race, Wayne Gretzky Hockey, Killer Instinct, Shadows Of The Empire, which are all bangers. So yeah, its astronomically worse than ever.
