It's true: Death Stranding is a nearly six-year-old game, and its PS5 port -- the Director's Cut -- came out back in 2021. So no, this isn't exactly a timely posting. Or is it? After all, Death Stranding 2 launched on PlayStation 5 in recent weeks, and with it, many people are looking backwards towards where it all began, including me (Colin). Indeed, I've spent an ungodly amount of time with it en route to a Platinum Trophy. So I figured, why not get some content out of it? To talk about the experience in-depth, please welcome Punching Up's Gene Park and Summon Sign's Brad Ellis for a rousing chat about perhaps Kojima's most powerful (and zaniest?) work to date. And remember: Chris and I discussed the original way back in November of 2019 as well, so if you're looking for that episode, it's Episode 17 (yes, 17!) of Sacred+.

I also got the Platinum earlier this year thanks to a lot of Portal playtime! Loved it. Excited to get to DS2 as soon as possible … but too much to play and watch and read at the moment. Time to listen to this!

Work tonight might not be as dull as i thought it was going to be. Thanks 👍

Darren Steele

DS1 platinum was excellent. DS2 platinum is much easier. Even playing on brutal it's still easier that DS1

Death Stranding predicted Bowling Alone

I'm going to listen to this while I work on getting my settlements up to 5 stats in Death Stranding 2. #Synergy

It's such a work of art, a goofy one at times, but art nonetheless. A top five game for me

This came out as I am nearing the end in episode 14, nice timing. It took me 6 tries to get past ep 2 I’m glad I did

Amelie-ka is a bit of a stretch. I don't think that was intended. Her fake name is already Samantha America. She explains at the end that "ame" is a french word for soul & she combined it with lie.

Hey, Colin. Speaking of irregular chapter length, one book in the Wheel of Time has a 100 page prologue and another book has a 200 page chapter (that one is from the infamous Brandon Sanderson).

Gene spoils too much shit about other games whenever he’s on a show. Dial it back, please

Gene Park

What game did i spoil? What was the spoiler? - G

Adam Barnes

Okay, I was being a little dramatic. I realised that upon reflection. It was just a detail about DS2 that I didn’t know because I haven’t started it yet and would have liked to organically come across it. Apologies for being so harsh <3

Dial it back please. - g

It was really interesting coming for the DS1 platinum directly into DS2. I love Director’s Cut a lot but the sequel really makes it feel like a proof of concept

Stand down

Michael Thew

The directors cut is available on at least one of the tiers. That’s where I got it from. I have ultimate though so I’m not sure which one it is on

Michael Thew

You can, it’s a prompt when you walk to the structure

ChaosZwei+5

You're watching a spoiler cast you dumb fuck

Adam Barnes

About DS1, not DS2, genius.

Tristan Kimball

The rusting structures never bothered me and honestly not one of my structures ever decayed to the point of being unusable, if it did it might’ve been one section of road or 1 zipline. I felt a great sense of accomplishment with my connected america at the end

AJWhite

The final scene with Die Hardman should have won him best performance at the game awards that year. That scene gives me chills, it's so so good.

Bailey Callis

Actually think Red Dead 2's gameplay is fantastic for what it's aiming for

Michael Thew

Expecially when they remapped them

Gene dropped an endgame DS2 spoiler, but luckily, I don’t think Colin picked up on it

For me it’s the fact that it feels I’m being punished for not finishing the game in time. I totally agree with Colin’s take that the end game should feel optimistic—I shouldn’t be surrounded by yellow triangles telling me my shit is falling apart I understand weapon decay in something like BOTW to encourage you to explore weapons. This felt like a punishment

Took me 3 years but I finally finished it. Such a beautiful hopeful, weird tarry, gloomy and phenomenal game. Shout out to Cliff Fragile and bb Lou. I loved this game gonna marinate on this for a bit before I play DS2. I'm excited
