Please welcome developer, academic, and US Senate candidate Chris Volpe to Sacred Symbols+. Chris is a darkhorse for the Democratic nomination in Ohio in the 2026 race, and I (Colin) invited him to the show to discuss the intersection of video games and politics, but not in a partisan or ideological fashion. (So, if you're afraid we're going to get into foreign policy, immigration, or other hot-button topics, fear not.) Rather, we focus our conversation around one simple question, and then span-out from there: How come no one in Washington DC has any semblance of understanding of video games and the industry that creates them, nor the massive culture that surrounds them? Mr. Volpe aims to fix these problems. With an entrepreneurial background, he may be one of the best-equipped people to figure out how the US government can better support and shepherd its vibrant gaming corporations, how tax breaks, state investment, and tariffs help or hurt, and why some countries -- like Canada, France, and so on -- do all of this so much better than we do. How come we're still waiting for The Gamer Politician? Maybe Chris Volpe is that man. Again, our wide-ranging conversation should be accessible to everyone of all political persuasions, and it's unlikely you'll hear much of anything that will offend you, regardless of your sensitivities. So press play with confidence!

Super unique idea for an episode. Awesome.

Collin Sparling

Very cool! I met Chris briefly years ago. Last I knew, he was heading an indie game studio here in Columbus and ran a gaming con called GDEX. He's a huge advocate for the indie game scene here. Excited to listen!

Girth Brooks

First 30 seconds “Here’s a politician. Get politics into our games. This show isn’t going to be political”. What?? Lol

Dante B

You fundamentally don’t understand what you’re reading / listening to.

Girth Brooks

Fundamentally cool story bro

Johnny Lamotte

I’m 20 mins in but have to head into work. Great episode so far.

Girth Brooks

Not as cool as you. I don’t read four paragraphs before every podcast I listen to. Shucks.

Dante B

This is a good look you should keep going.

Girth Brooks

You want me to keep not reading a page of notes before I read a podcast? Okay, deal lol

Dante B

Yes that is definitely what is being communicated here.

Joe Mama

You can listen to 4 hour podcasts but can't read 4 paragraphs? No wonder you're so scared of politics, words are hard.

Girth Brooks

It’s not a question of ability to read. If you think most people read 4 paragraphs about what a podcast is about before listening to it, you’re touched. But you knew that. Toodles babe.

Kalessh

I'd say Congressman Frost out of Florida would count as a Gamer Politician, I've even seen him play Yu-Gi-Oh so he's in the know lol

Joe Mama

I would think most people would read the description before bitching about being deceived in the comments, especially on a podcast they're paying for. Enjoy your victim complex.

C

Um… yes, we do, because we want to know what the focus is for the episode… Do you understand how incredibly stupid people are finding you right now?

Girth Brooks

Don’t really care. These “people” are just angry ugly nerds on the internet. It’s not really weighing on me all that much tbh.

Deemac

I might understand this reaction if someone just stumbled upon this episode on YouTube. But from a paying patron of LSM, it's truly bizarre

Roberto Ramirez

Cool conversation but bro really trying to be Colin's friend.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

As a Canadian I can tell you that if you need emergency healthcare here its top notch. But if you have chronic pain or need a hip replacement or shoulder surgery you will be waiting a long time. And you will be waiting while debilitated and in pain... But hey at least its free right? Needless to say many Canadians do indeed make a trip south if they need something minor done.

Joe Mamma

Krystal and Saagar should have Colin on Breaking Points when video games come up on their show inevitably. It’s kind of a blind spot for them whenever the subject comes up. Especially since Saagar seems to be against them as of late.

Lou Sassle

What is your personality? Void?

Guybrush Threepwood

"I don't think Trump actually has ANY values...." Ah you are wrong, sir. Avarice. It is not party loyalty (he was a Democrat for 8-9 years in the 2000's), that's for sure. But avarice, yes. It is his strongest quality.

Rudibager

I loved this episode.

PairOfShuse

Overall the episode was decent. Just really think some of the things the guest said were sorta disingenuous. Example: a conversation on immigration - what does that even mean? Whenever I hear that it’s always trying to be more favorable towards people here illegally instead of actual citizens. Trump not having any principles? You can go back like 20, 30 years and he’s still talking about similar things regarding law and order, immigration, fiscal responsibility. Now not all of this stuff is being pursued like it should be (especially fiscally with government spending but then look at the whole SNAP debacle with who is getting benefits and what benefits can be used on) but to say he has no principles is putting the blinders on. It’s kind of why I don’t entirely agree on the whole bull in a China shop analogy either. To an extent it’s true but things like border control, fraud and waste, law and order, etc have been so fragrantly disregarded in the government for so long, these should be utter focuses and come down on hard and fast. The medical talk was fairly disappointing. I’ve been in the health care field for almost 14 years. I’ve also had my own challenges with the US healthcare system and still am. But to say the countries like Canada or England have superior healthcare is so untrue. A doctor in Canada literally had to sue to be able to open private clinics to take care of people because of the horrible care people received other than urgent care type scenarios. People in England literally went blind because they “didn’t have the resources” to do cataract surgery on them. And to praise the VA? I see people on a daily basis that never have anything good to say and I’ve had personal friends who get subpar care as well. The vast abuse of Medicare and Medicaid are also huge problems. Most of these problems are government issues because of how corrupt and incompetent they are as well as bloat in the health care system as a whole. Add into that people here getting health care that are here illegally and getting better benefits than actual citizens, the homeless, or veterans is a crime against the citizenry. There are easy fixes if our government and leaders had spines and weren’t corrupt either such as cracking down on insurance companies, research funding (it’s a joke how much gatekeeping and money between pharmaceutical companies etc introduce conflicts of interest), transparency with pricing, pricing for countries outside the US and the US taking on most of the cost, standards for education etc. On one hand I don’t want the government anywhere near gaming. Look at the internet and how all of these governments are coming together to implement vast censorship on the populace. I don’t trust them not to do this. But in that same vein, this is also happening outside of the government as well from entities most recently like payment processors likes Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal, not to mention ongoing censorship and rules by Google and Apple just having vague standards for what can even be put on the Google play or Apple app stores in general. I’m like Colin where I’m not a democrat or republican. I’m an independent who should say I’m a small “L” libertarian. I lean more right but I agree with some things on the left. Both sides are pretty awful with censorship and individual liberty. It’s a tough situation that doesn’t seem like will be solved anytime soon.

BigDumbStupidIdiot

If Volpe doesn't win a seat, I hope he can strong armed into running the ESRB. The video game industry is too massive to have such a piss poor lobbying group

PairOfShuse

I don’t know if that would be great. Like one way or the other genuinely. I don’t know what his thoughts on censorship are, or many other things game related.

zepplinmike

I enjoyed this, but as someone with a career in the association space (not ESA), when you guys talked about that it was one of those moments of “oh here’s something I actually know a lot about and can tell they have no clue whatsoever what they’re saying.” What an association is and its purpose seems to be fundamentally misunderstood. An association IS its members (in ESA’s case, the actual gaming companies) with the staff acting in general at the behest of the Board of Directors. Their main roles are providing lobbying, networking, trade shows, professional development, and developing industry best practices. In no world do they regulate the business activities of their members like the Saudi deal, and if they tried to, they wouldn’t have members. ESA doesn’t publicly list its BOD, but it’s a good bet EA sits on it as well. Also, although they focus on the industry in the US, the ESA is made up of international and cross-national members, so trying to push protectionism for American workers makes absolutely zero sense because that would conflict with the interests of many member companies. I can already hear you saying “well they should because it’s good,” well, either way, that’s not why the ESA exists and not how it’s structured so it can never happen. What you would need is a separate organization specifically made to promote the games industry ONLY in the US, but I don’t really see that as realistic either because what company in the space is made up of only American offices at this point?

PairOfShuse

Then why comment? Wasting your time

Xstar25

As one of the most taxed nations in the world, please don’t call our healthcare “free”.

zepplinmike

FYI as I said in my comment above, the conversation here was really misinformed about how associations like the ESA work (and it’s the ESA that’s the “lobbying group,” the ESRB is the independent ratings organization). The ESA is “run” by a board made up of member companies (likely Nintendo, Sony, EA, etc) and the staff works in accordance with their wishes. So their lobbying priorities are purely in line with what the member companies want them to be doing for them. Lobbying the US government against a merger/acquisition by a major member, like Colin wished in reference to EA and the Saudis, is totally illiterate to what industry associations are, how they work, and why they exist. (Source: I have worked in the nonprofit association space for ~15 years)

AroundTheBrend

Haha you’re right, I was being a dick. I read your post… all I have to say is I also work in healthcare and am a little surprised by your take. The quality of healthcare I think varies greatly on where you live, state to state and country to country, and by what insurance you have, so you can present numerous anecdotes about people’s poor experience here and there but the main issue is that people in the U.S. die, or go into crippling debt for healthcare, and that’s just not ok. Wait-times as they are now are terrible, and honestly maybe they’d get worse if there was a universal healthcare option for everyone, or maybe that would encourage growth in the industry, more hospitals, more urgent cares, more staff. If you work in healthcare you should know staffing is really the true issue as to why wait times are long. No one that works in the hospital wants people to have to wait for their care, but we can only do so much with the staff we have. Also what are you saying about illegals and homeless getting better benefits than working citizens? First of all, would you propose they get no healthcare and die? Second, I’m pretty sure those populations get emergency services under EMTALA and charity funds, and that’s it. Unless an undocumented immigrant or homeless person can pay out of pocket for a knee replacement, I don’t think they are getting a knee replacement, so idk where you’re getting the idea that they have better benefits than someone that pays for insurance. Hopefully that didn’t devolve into rambling.

PairOfShuse

Nah cool, I actually appreciate the thought out response. I completely agree with your healthcare take actually. It does vary wildly from town to town and city to city, though with universal healthcare, that doesn’t really differ. Unless everyone was going to the same place for education, being taught by the same people, and not given the go ahead with different grades and clinical work evaluation, you really can’t change the varying standards place to place. The cost is mainly due to insurance from what I’ve seen. For example, I had to get an MRI recently and cash price it was only 600 dollars. If I did that through insurance they bill for close to 3000. That’s insane with how much the cost is jacked up. That’s the main reason, IMO why health care costs are so high. Between than and in the US, we roughly have the same amount of doctors and nurses, but the amount of bureaucratic and administrative positions have exponentially increased. Seems like utter bloat to me. Staffing can be an issue definitely but I don’t think just increasing staff is the answer. We need quality staffing on top of that. But I agree, there are more patients than doctors etc can see in a given day leading to subpar care as well. Education really lacks in nutrition education. Too much of a focus on treating after the fact. With universal care, I just read about every place that has it and everything is always underfunded and leads to really bad care, shortage of supplies, services not being able to be rendered. It also doesn’t attract the best people either as while I do believe most who go into healthcare want to help people, it would be a lie to say they also don’t do it for the pay. I remember when I was engaged to someone from Canada and we looked into where would pay the most either there or here and the pay cut I’d take would be by almost 2/3rd and pay another 20 percent in taxes on top of what I pay. That’s just not worth it. I don’t want anyone to die but I also don’t think they should be taking taxpayer or charity dollars over our own citizenry. What’s the point of a society and a nation with its citizens if they aren’t the ones directly paying into it? So while I don’t want anyone to die, no one here illegally is entitled to any services our government provides. They might not be getting knee replacements etc, but going to the emergency room costs money and time, especially for a system that doesn’t have enough staff to meet demand as is. It’s more, and it does happen and has happened, that someone here illegally getting Medicaid benefits/insurance, is taking away either from someone here who is a citizen who could have it OR more money could be used for those already on Medicaid. But nah, not rambling at all, and like I said, I do appreciate the thought out response

Kladknee .

Colin you're constantly passionate and brilliant. I'm not surprised by this very kind and intelligent guest :)

Ross Stoddart

Great discussion! Loved this and would love to hear Chris back on again.

Yixel

I think the information you have regarding british health care is flawed. It's by no means perfect but at its core anyone can get healthcare free at point of service. It may not be always the best but it's far superior to none at all.

PairOfShuse

I never said it’s worse than none at all. https://www.straitstimes.com/world/europe/thousands-in-britain-left-to-go-blind-due-to-eye-surgery-rationing-report Im not sure how reliable this source is but I remember seeing an article years ago about this. https://www.theguardian.com/society/article/2024/jun/16/boom-in-cataract-surgery-in-england-as-private-clinics-eye-huge-profits And this is something I never hear people talk about are the private clinics that pick up the slack. Canada is the same way and I didn’t know this until I looked into it. So it’s not just taxpayer funded and perfect like universal healthcare is talked about. Both systems have their pluses and minuses but generally while it’s more expensive in the US I’m pretty sure the care, depending on what you are going for and where you go, is top of the line in the world.

Adam Martinez

Great convo. I really enjoyed the guest. He seems smart and reasonable

Ryan

The amount of self control Colin showed in not correcting ‘games pass’ was impressive 😂

ThePrinceMagus

So let me get this straight… the guy who wants to run for senate on behalf of gamers, with understanding the video games industry unlike anyone else, refers to Gamepass as “Games Pass”? Ok. Good luck bro.

Simon Concepcion Jr.

Does Colin still indulge in cannabis? It would be hilarious because Saagar is hilarious when it comes to his anti weed stance.

Evan Westendorf

This episode is the perfect encapsulation of why I subscribe to LSM. I saw a bunch of people SUPER butthurt that Colin was potentially gonna talk to Alyssa Mercante, calling him a "fake conservative" and saying he wouldnt "push back". Thats not the point of an interview. Its not a "debate". Too many people out there expect opposing sides to only ever be at eachothers throats, and looking to "own" them. Colin lets people talk. Its about an exhange of ideas and LISTENING, something that far too many people seem to have lost any interest in.

Maxx Lazos

dude is really impressive

Otacon

Great episode man

Frank G.

We need more true gamers in politics and Chris is one of em. Really good talk with this man, I'm a little bummed to of not heard what's his favorite platform and games but idk i guess some other time then.

Chris

it's more open-ended chats like these that keep my patreon sub clinging to life. Colin is so rational and systems oriented in seemingly every facet of life except politics, where it seems he's devoted to the labels and thus consistently running damage control for the right, occasionally throws out unvetted propaganda or echoes party lines and eschews humility in the process. but in chats like these it's a reminder that, even if he's gotta twist himself into a pretzel to reconcile it, you can see a set of very admirable core beliefs.

Glen Yelenovic

This is what sets LSM apart from the others. You can have someone on who doesn’t have the exact same opinions as you and have an intelligent conversation about actual issues. More like this please

Clint

Best episode in a long ass time. Someone on the same level intellectually as Colin. Bring him back and hire him if you can
