Is Cloud Gaming the Future? | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 488

Please welcome Christian Polson-Brown to Sacred+. Christian is the marketing manager of the Australia-based GeForce NOW partner Pentanet, and I (Colin) invited him to the show to discuss his industry and his craft. Here's the thing: I'm not so sure I believe in cloud gaming as the be-all/end-all future for gaming. But as Christian tells it, that's not really what the purveyors of this new way of play are attempting. Rather, the use of cloud gaming could be supplemental, situational, or based simply on convenience, and while it may not take out your console or PC, it'll almost certainly become an ever-larger option that sits alongside them. From subscriptions versus a la carte purchasing and where fallen competitors like OnLive and Stadia got it wrong, to 'the speed of light problem' and the potential ecological damage of gaming via the cloud, we discuss a whole lot in our truncated hour-long conversation. Please enjoy.

Interesting to learn about this technology and its economic and technical challenges. To me the machine in my own living room or in my hands will always be the magical portal to other worlds and realities. Consolero for life.

One question I ask myself is why any console gamer would want to stream their game instead of playing it locally. To save energy and to have less wear on their system? For lack of harddrive space? Would this be enough to actually prefer cloud to local for more console gamers? Or is this primarily a technology for PC players and eventually smart tv only gamers?

I used to care about 4K, but nowadays if I can instantly stream without waiting to download anything, that is appealing to me. Cloud streaming on the portal is great.

Playing a game on GeForce Now isn't really the same experience as playing it natively on PC. I could be wrong but I don't think GeForce Now offers ultrawide resolutions or the ability to mod your games. So a lot less customization, which is part of the draw of PC gaming. It's been a few years since I tried it so maybe they've implemented those features. But that alone makes it a no go for me. Edit: Apparently they do offer 21:9 ultrawide at the premium tier. Alas, I have a Samsung G9 Odyssey 32:9 super ultrawide monitor, so still a no go for me.

PRETENTIEUX

people will "prefer" it just fine when it is the only option. you can say goodbye to tinkering with parts as well. it's pretty clear they want to own the hardware even if it IS inside your house. do you really feel like your current desktop is your machine?

"I sold all my MS stock but I regret it now..." - Of course you did, Colin, don't ever change!

Big Booty Latinas Can Stay

Slowly sipping a protein shake through a straw is the most unsettling thing I've ever seen. Chug those. You chug those, Colin.

I'm too old to ever experience a possible 100% streaming world myself. That's for others to "enjoy".

Geforce Now has a free option for people to try. I tried it and played Doom Eternal and it worked just fine even on the free option. It does seem like a good option in the future instead of upgrading my hardware.

2 year sub to GFN where I live, it works so well on my steam deck. The new Blackwell architecture is incredible.
