Please welcome storied game designer David Jaffe to Sacred+ for his first appearance of 2026. Today, I (Colin) invited him onto the show to discuss a bunch of topics in our trademark freeform style, with lots of tangents and interruptions: How we manage the endless choice of 'what game to play next,' the way the gaming industry has been morphed and altered by social media and Discord, what it's like helping to create God of War and Twisted Metal only to see them take on a life of their own, if there's any 'fixing' Call of Duty, the trouble (or lack thereof) with AI art, and more. Jaffe‘s views on generative AI are so spot on. Colin is going to look so stupid in a few years time. Although he seems to soften more to it. It’s inevitable and the benefits both commercially and for the fugue of our society are huge. This will evolve to many other things.

The reason I think people on Colin's side of the aile on AI, which I am admittedly on, is because we don't want to simply just "Consume Product". AI would take all things a certain customer base would like (say JRPG players) and make it with the things they like and it could be technically excellent but we aren't playing games to just pass the time and get a dopamine hit like a mobile player. We are chasing the artistic vision and like to see the human element of the director's choices in a game. To what end are we doing this for if an algorithm is just going to tell us what we like? This is removing the artistry from the medium.

The AI issue I don’t often hear Jaffe address is that of training. I agree that AI as a concept is very useful in many fields, but the issue for me is that LLMs and especially image models are inherently a form of copyright infringement. The NYT vs OpenAI case will be very interesting here

It’s not inherently copyright infringement because most if not all training, especially of LLMs does not read entire texts at once. It acts most like someone in a library jumping from book to book reading one sentence or paragraph from each. I still think it’s not quite kosher though. Mostly because the large companies in the field keep getting caught in lies.

That is fair! My thinking is that a human is a more amorphous confluence of artistic influences and experience whereas a machine taking in copyrighted content is more in/out (a Transformation, if you will) no matter how much abstraction is layered on top of that process

I think it's a mix of that combined with the generally isolating feeling of the digital age. I have this thesis (no clue if I'm right on it or not) that men tend to get more drawn in to social media and internet rabbit holes because they feel like they lack the ability to open up to others in their real life, so they seek some sort of validation through the internet which actually just makes them feel more lonely. It's almost like a vicious cycle, y'know? Could also be what Colin and Jaffe were saying about finding people who share similar interests online and wanting that more than real-life friendships.

I think the AI debate about creativity is funny here because Jaffe is an actual conceptual artist who has created amazing things like GoW and Twisted Metal, and don’t get me wrong Colin is also a content creator and concept artist for Lilimo - but you just think they would be on the opposite sides of each other haha.

A regular Jaffe show sounds great! 3-5 times a week is too often though, once a week is perfect. Personally I don't like the live stream format so a regular recorded show would be best but that's just preference.

I have said it before, and I will say it again: Jaffe is chocolate cake. Eat it once a month and it’s a tasty treat. Eat it once a week and it won’t be so special anymore. Eat it every day and you’ll be sick of it. Love hearing from Jaffe once in a while, but if I had to weigh in on his proposal for his own regular show on LSM, I’d have to issue a hard stand down.

#1- Nothing in the post I am responding to from Yosh has anything to do with politics. And nothing in my response was mentioning politics. #2- I didn't try to 'prick' anyone. When Colin and I do these, there is always a proceeding email going, 'Let's talk about whatever we are into and is on our minds'. We are both politically engaged people- often from different places ideologically but no always- and I enjoy discussing politics with my friend. But like with any good communicator- and good friend- when you are chatting and it's clear the person you are talking to doesn't want to really engage w/one of the topics you bring up, you move on. That's not called 'prickling'. It's called not being a shitty friend.

Well the people causing a lot of the issues and forcing ICE to respond, to whatever degree, seem to be from the same areas and they definitely don’t want anyone deported regardless of how heinous the crime. Maybe it’s the areas in question and not the force deployed? It isn’t a coincidence that the worst of the BLM insanity happened in the same state. Some of the actions have been overbearing but when you’re surrounded by hundred, at times thousands of hostile people, it’s going to be touchy. Often times, these agitators want to provoke a response and you’re naive to think this isn’t happening a lot of the times. They manipulate clips and try to get them viral without showing any form of context. I’m Canadian, I see the amount of deportations under other presidents and this entire response seems partisan. Democrats and the far left out en masse, most being paid to shepard it, only really care because it isn’t their guy doing the deporting. That’s pretty much it and if it wasn’t ICE deportations they’d have found another thing to throw a tantrum over. It’s boils down to they lost the election and they can’t stand it and want to unleash their rage and self important, idealized moral superiority on everyone else. It can’t be them, their actions and their policies as to why they lost, it’s everyone else and they’re going to pay. At this point the insurrection act has to be enacted in that state if you’re to have any semblance of federal law in the USA. You can’t have this and until people realize that it’s going to get much worse. Let them do their jobs, get the fuck out of the way, stop blocking traffic and antagonizing regular people, stop threatening and attacking federal officers and let your voice be heard in the mid-terms. If you don’t do those things I have no sympathy for you.

The argument is about morality. Music, architecture, drawings....art in general is given meaning because it is created by conscious beings. Oh I use AI for some practical black and white work stuff and it’s fantastic. I agree entirely that it should be kept out of art. I absolutely despise seeing AI slop on social media and in games I’m not a fan at all. And I agree - it’s that same feeling we had when techno and EDM came out and we were like if it’s completely computer generated, is it even music? But the argument was always yes because of the creativity of the human orchestrating it and arranging it. With AI now we’re completely losing the plot.

Not gonna lie, I'm not interested in a Jaffe show. Sorry about this insane stray going to be caught, but he reminds me a lot of Derrick from snark tank. He tries to push himself into a mold even when he knows it's disingenuous. One thing I respect about Colin is that he will admit when he's wrong and he won't try to argue something just to stay consistent with his "side". This isn't a left or right thing. Chris and Gene have that ability too for example. Jaffe on the other hand doesn't. He's a culture warrior through and through. A lot more coherent than the others, but I truly do not see Jaffe as being genuine like the rest of LSM.

Appreciate you Jaffe, but talking about AI you didn’t even acknowledge Colin’s point: - There are questions we humans answer objectively, like simple facts or math - which are arguably fine for AI to answer. - And there are things centered on the human experience that are highly subjective, that should be perceived and filtered by a human to be conveyed to another human. Derailing that conversation away from humans toward dogs, aliens, and the consciousness of plants isn't even remotely an answer to what Colin was saying; in fact, it ignores his entire angle. That an alien or a dog (or an AI) doesn't know anything about the human experience is the exact point.

Jaffes take on AI boils down to "i dont care how thing was made, as long as I enjoy it" which is very much centered on the consumer and not the creative process. I think Colin isn’t acting “cowardly” at all - my read on it is: I think he’s seen that the division political conversations became so toxic and overwhelming in the communities discourse that it drove loud, vocal minorities to be really disgusting - and by and large - LSM community has always stayed away from that rabbit hole. Colin is usually very happy and willing to answer political questions during the monthly QA’s - I think he just smartly sees that overt political debates don’t need to be prominent here because it’s less valuable to the LSM society.

Only writing this because you guys asked for feedback but I personally have zero interest in a Jaffe show. I think he makes a really interesting guest appearance from time to time and I appreciate his insights in triple A development but I think his argumentative hot-take nature does not blend well with the more chill wholesome vibe that LSM has fostered. I think this episode was a great example of the Jaffe experience. Really great at the beginning of the show but then became damn near unlistenable during the AI discussion in which he kinda just dismisses other people’s view points as wrong or dumb and asks silly gotcha questions like “how do we know a tree is not conscious?” Stuff like that is a fun listen from time to time but not on a weekly show. Sorry if this comment comes off too negative. Don’t mean anything personal towards Jaffe and really do enjoy listening to you guys catch up from time to time.

Jaffe mentioning how COD should be turned into a platform because he doesn’t want to lose his skins - well that’s exactly what they’ve been doing for a number of years: you need to download the free COD app to your console, the games act as extentions and your skins are still there since it’s basically the same game.

I think the difference between Colin and Jaffe on the AI debate is they value different things. Jaffe seems to value the finished product, while Colin seems to value the process. The art and beauty of creation is in the process, not the product.
