The Story Was Quite Clear | Sacred Symbols, Episode 402

With Sony abandoning its chase of easy PC dollars, the megalithic Japanese company instead seems intent on maximizing its dollars at home, and reasonably so. While reporting indicates PlayStation's PC sales were stymied by staggered and unpredictable releases, that was already obvious. What's less clear is how Sony's pursuit of profit might affect the status quo, with a lawsuit in the UK over PSN monopolization and blatant A/B testing for dynamic digital pricing happening right before our eyes. What does the future hold as we begin to move towards next-gen? Plus: EA lays off members of the Battlefield team that created America's best-selling game in 2025, Nagoshi Studio and its Yakuza-like title Gang of Dragon are in big trouble, a LEGO PlayStation (1) console is seemingly en route for the holiday season, adventure classics Myst and Riven are PS5-bound, Crimson Desert finally emerges on PS5 Pro, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! With id finding so much success with the revived Doom trilogy, could Quake be next? What was the deal with that cryptic Bluepoint Tweet from 2019, anyway? Are physical-only players being hurt by the underproduction of copies of big games? Is Dustin intentionally making mistakes in his edits to sabotage our entire operation? I thought the RE9 spoiler cast was supposed to be this week?

The real solution isn't creating more fragmented storefronts. It's expanding authorized sales of digital redemption codes through third-party retailers (Amazon, Best Buy, etc.). This lets those retailers apply competitive pricing, volume deals, and promotions to digital just like they do with physical while Sony still receives full wholesale payment for each code redeemed. Consumers win with lower digital prices, physical retail stays supported, and the system becomes fairer overall

Palo in Tokyo at Square Enix and Goodsmile were excellent episodes. Highly recommended.

Does anyone remember back in the 90's after MYST came out there was a parody game called PYST that starred John Goodman. The tagline on the box was "Four million people have trashed the island... now it's your turn!". Good times.

Colin.. The Capital of Manitoba is Winnipeg. REGINA is the capital of Saskatchewan. Sincerely a deeply offended Nova Scotian. (Our capital is Halifax) 🤠

Colin, you should look into Windows 10 or 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC. It's Windows but without all the bloat. It also gets rid of the AI and other background processes.

Your Boi Nicky V

Colin's the GOAT but the misunderstanding of the PSN pricing suit and saying Sony games shouldn't be discounted are wild takes.

Germanos

OK, so as I mentioned last week. I will send you my comment on Linux Ubuntu also in DMs.

David Olandersson

If Valve can allow third party sales of codes, I'm sure Sony can figure it out too. It's not about technology or security, it's about money.

Parangariku tirimiquaro

This isn't showing up on youtube yet so came here. Here we go! My monday!

Regarding the closed ecosystem discussion, Grubb replied to a tweet from Colin in the past year or so about the rumors of next Xbox being open and the business part of it. Grubb stated he thinks Microsoft long term play is the winds blowing in the direction of regulators and courts forcing closed ecosystems to allow others in….. paving the way for Microsoft to put gamepass etc everywhere whether the other platform holders want it or not.

A few more episodes and you guys will take it seriously, what I wrote about to Colin in the LSM patreon DMs :D The gaming ecosystem is becoming intentionally hostile towards games. Loved Chris's rant on the hypocrisy of gamers talking about wanting something new and bitching when they get it. It applies even more to how the game looks. As soon as the Marathon dropped, the comments were, "Why cannot it look like game X?", "Why are fonts so wack?", and "What are these colors, man?" Dumbass gamers.
