It's me, Colin. Please welcome LSM EP Dustin Furman, Summon Sign host Brad Ellis, and LSM editor Lockmort to Sacred+ for a detailed conversation about Resident Evil Requiem, aka Resident Evil 9. The newest entrant in Capcom's quintessential survival horror series is experiencing the fastest sales velocity in its history, a remarkable feat for a 30-year old franchise. Indeed, it's obviously more relevant now than it has ever been. That's probably because the game itself is exceptional, a mix of true survival horror with more traditional action that melds the two 'styles' of Resident Evil for the first time ever. Join us as we get into every facet of the game, from its story and characters to its gameplay, atmosphere, graphics, sound design, and more. There's a lot to say!

Perfect timing because I should be finishing it over the weekend! I’ll be listening on Monday! 👌

Eric

Man, really bummed they recorded this before Colin got platinum. I feel like there is so much more to say after the multiple playthroughs.

Lunar Tear

It was a Japanese Sega Saturn in the locker in RPD

Black Detective in Dexter

Is this it? Is it finally here? After years of waiting, have we arrived? Do we finally have a new game that Colin can call "probably the most beautiful game I've ever seen". Or is it still Horizon Forbidden West?

Zachary

Dustin sounds like a whiny bitch lol

Tyrone Yhip

Thats because he is, when it comes to certain games and other things.

Cloud

Colin "couldn't you just" Moriarty lol

GunMetalJackal

I played it on Switch 2 and saw a Saturn. Was wondering if on PS5 they changed it to a PlayStation 1.

Lunar Tear

I played on PS5, and it was a saturn.

Supes

if "having criticisms of a game you still like" makes you a whiny bitch then I'll gladly join the bitch club with Dustin

Zachary

Still love ya

Daddy T

“Still love ya” but calls him a whiny bitch, make it make sense

Zachary

Love hurts daddy t

I liked Requiem a lot, but I'm probably more in line with Dustin's opinion overall in that there are some aspects that didn't hit for me. Mainly, I really enjoyed the first half of the game in the hospital, I was really hot on the game at that point. It was the beginning of the second half that let me down, playing as Leon in the outskirts was no where near as engaging for me. I found the environment such a let down and visually boring after the hospital and I prefer Grace's gameplay over Leon's more action heavy gameplay. But the game picked back up for me once you finally get past the gate. I spent a lot of time with the game on my first playthrough. Game said 13:47. I think my PSN clock was at 20 hours. I played throughly, cleaning out the hospital as Grace, and spent a bit of time messing around. I figured out what to do with the severed hand and found some of the other clues for the final puzzle naturally. I don't really like when games suddenly give players a choice at the end of the game when it's never done anything like that before. I got the good ending right away, I paid attention to the cutscenes and when the game gave me a choice, I kinda figured...

Dante B

OP managed to whine more in one sentence here than Dustin does in this entire episode, which is zero.

Dante B

Good episode. Pretty much agree with Dustin across the board on this one. Really liked the game, but shocked by the top 3 RE discourse around it.

Supes

I think the environments in the second half would've worked better if there was more enemy variety. For me it was less about the visuals (it's a bombed-out city, it's all kinda gonna look like ruins) and more that the encounters just started to feel a bit samey. The gas station fight was kinda cool, though. but yeah, Grace > Leon for sure. The stuff in the hospital is some of the most peak survival horror shit I've ever played. Wish the whole game had been like that.

Tommy the sniper

The big fat guy in the hallway can be killed pretty easy with 3 injections with Grace also. By the time I got to play as Leon in the hospital I’d pretty much cleared the place out as Grace.

Bert Chintus

Probably my favorite spoiler cast to listen to, and fastest platinum I’ve done! :)

Xenomorph Moriarty

I don’t think The Last of Us is quite as original as Colin seems to think… no shade. Love both games. But there were hundreds of chaotic post apocalyptic horror ruined city examples that came decades before the Last of Us. Didn’t see the overt connection or inspiration personally.

Tanner Brant

Great episode, I didn't know about Tofu!

Cole Phelps Sends Babies To Jail

I instantly thought of TLOU with that one section midgame, I’ve gone through it 3 times and I love that whole part.

Cai

I agree somewhat with Dustin, but am also of the opinion that most Resi games drag a bit in the second half, so for that reason it would still be a top 3 for me.

Black Detective in Dexter

I'm with you Dustin. I loved the game but it really did feel like 2 separate games duct taped together. I much prefer the 3rd person Leon action heavy survival horror. RE4 Remake is a modern masterpiece in my opinion. Probably in my top 5 games all time. So I really just want another full Leon game. I liked the Grace sections but the whole time I was playing those, I just wanted to get back to Leon.

Walk Forward Cutscene

You sound like a Kinda Funny fan. It’s okay to criticize a new release - Capcom will be just fine.

Genius but with downs

About to do my fifth and final run. Insanity mode but I've got infinite ammo and rocket launcher so I imagine it'll be easy enough. Great game. Can't wait to pop da plat

JoshM

I did but primarily at the underground, flooded garage area - stealthing around in there, I couldn’t stop thinking of TLOU which bothered me a bit lol. Outside of that tho, it’s not as direct imo and didn’t notice as much as Colin did

JoshM

Same here, I think there was clearly a lot of sacrifices be it intentional or a result of the rocky development and surprised more didn’t pick up on it - still a great game, but if we’re including remakes and originals, def not top 3 for me. Think Leon’s section is really what let me down, even if I prefer his gameplay style - and kinda wish we had more of both Grace and Leon by the end

JoshM

I feel like the dismissal of the game length as a criticism feels a bit unfair - like Dustin said, by combining two gameplay styles, you’re truncating progression for both characters. It’s not that 10hrs in itself is a bad length, but it’s how - at least for me - I wanted more from both and wish the game had been an extra couple hours or so to accommodate that, along with more curated progression. Also without a true NG+, the approach they’ve taken removes away the permanence you had with upgrades and items in 8 and 4R. Still great nonetheless, but I think some complaints of length are valid.

Dante B

Completely agree on the Leon sections. Everything was just so drab and bland? Not horrible or anything but not even in the same league gameplay and design wise as something like 4R. Just incredibly dull level design.

Cousin Kenny

Awful lot of CP talk in this episode….

DeliveryBoy.357

I think Dustin just had a couple of criticisms that’s it. He said he liked the game. It ain’t that deep man

ChaosZwei+5

As we all know tlou invented post apocalyptic city scapes and if Colin means gameplay wise tlou is just cinematic re4

Casey Cieslikowski

I really don’t get get Dustin’s Force Awakens critique with 9. If anything is FA it’s Village. Village is literally just a worse 4.

Xemphanis

Leon’s first scene is an homage to RE6. Leon fights zombies in a traffic jam in the tutorial level.

Derrek Beeck

Totally agree with Dustin about the nostalgia plays. I'm getting increasingly sick of media just throwing old stuff at you like they're jingling keys in front of your face. I think resident evil 9 is great but it gets so bad near the end of the game

YP-Berserk

Colin is so off about the last of us stuff, the beginning of the game with Leon is much like the start of his campaign in RE6, which Colin hasn’t played of course. Idk why he’s misreading this, there are very general videogame things in the game he attributes to a last of us inspiration

The Incredible Shulk

TLOU invented viral/zombie outbreaks in a metropolitan area. Never done before

Gooch Gobbler

I just like the more rural setting of village/4 and village has that crazy scary part, scarier than anything in this game to me

Gooch Gobbler

Honestly it's still Forbidden West for me but AW2 got them on lighting in quality mode

Gooch Gobbler

I can't believe people didn't hate the Grace orphanage parts as much as me where you play as her as a little kid. Huge drop down in quality from the rest of the game. Really took me out. That and the nostalgia plays were a bit much. I found the Mr X boss battle very underwhelming and the game was too easy overall. Maybe I'm just getting too good at survival horror as it's my favorite genre lol RE4>RE2>RE7>RE3>RE9>RE8>RE5>spin offs (revelations/outbreak)>6 (barely played). Never played the others, waiting for remakes!

Gooch Gobbler

Colin please play Evil Within! You'd love it if you love this. Some of my favorite games of all time

Brandyn Ramos

Re9 feels like highest quality brain rot. Presentation wise it’s incredible but man gameplay wise it’s so shallow. Leon especially just looses so much due to the enemy variety being so lame. His progression/upgrades were meaningless. The stalker enemy is a huge step down from Mr.X gameplay wise. They also just introduced so many cool ideas they did nothing with. All the zombie types seem to have some kind of counterpart they were supposed to interact with. Singing lady and guy who doesn’t like loud noise, cleaning lady and blood puddles all over the place, bloater monster that makes blister heads or even the guy who turns the lights off seemed to be foreshadowing the stalker would chase you through the whole hospital and it never happened. I don’t regret my time with it but it’s absolutely a let down. Gorgeous but shallow as a puddle.

NecrumOddBoy

I 100% beat the final boss without ever seeing that there was an RPG on the map lol. I just use requiem to blow off the blisters and then use the machine gun to spray out the little ones on the ground.

C

That’s so funny you say that because my girlfriend was watching me play and I said “oh there’s always a big rocket launcher to finish the boss off” and I also never saw the RPG then!
