Good lord, Colin's fully bought in to the worst version of isolationism possible, both economically and geopolitically

Shadi Haddad

Jaffe's AI argument completely won me over. I've been more in Colin's camp on it but I don't think there was a strong enough rebuttal. It all boiled down to when Jaffe said that the thing Colin was locked into was "how do you make a game" and Jaffe was locked into "what a game is".

Gabriel Prégent Terborch

Every country always thinking of itself first is not how you get a more peaceful and better world, it's how you get back to 19th century Realpolitik and wars

Gabriel Prégent Terborch

No H1Bs, let's make sure America doesn't have access to the best and brightest in the whole world

Gabriel Prégent Terborch

Colin's economic preferences are this weird mix of 19th century industrial revolution capitalism and age of exploration mercantilism, it's so deconnected from actual modern economics it's bizarre

Dikkbig Though

Like Dustin said, if I went to a museum to see the Mona Lisa would I want AI used to make it look better? Do we care about artist intention? Does being great at creating something even matter anymore? If AI is ok then why even have artist?

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

Are you one of those losers who is always posting on the LSM reddit? Why are you making so many comments you seem unhinged.

Gabriel Prégent Terborch

Buddy before calling anyone unhinged reflect on your username and get daddy's nuts out of your mouth before you choke

To be fair to Colin I think it’s a little hard to argue with someone essentially saying they don’t care if art was made by humans or not. Quite a lot of people do care about the human touch and creation behind things. Jaffe might be saying he still wants at least one human author, but he was ok with DLSS 5 overwriting what those authors created anyway (which I couldn’t hate more, personally). If people didn’t care about human authorship in art, why isn’t the internet flooded with everyone’s fake Taylor Swift songs or an AI-written Winds of Winter, so we can finally get that book? Because no one wants that shit and I don’t think that will change no matter how good the tech gets.

Gabriel Prégent Terborch

To be fair to Jaffe, and he explains this eventually, he considers what he contributed to the games he worked on to be of artistic merit and to have artfulness in and of itself, so I understand him coming to the conclusion that if he could replace every one of his colleagues with AI except him, and basically choose everything the AI creates and design the experience of the game, that the end product would be art because even if all the AI contributions aren't, his would still be.

Shadi Haddad

Yes 100% I'm with you. And to Jaffe's point of "what is a game" the human element of authorship is paramount. I think later in the conversation when it got to the role he played more as a director than a technician, the human authorship was still there. I don't think either of them would say human authorship should not be part of what makes a game great.

zepplinmike

I agree but I also guarantee you that every country is thinking of itself first, there are just really complicated calculations of what’s in their interest. That includes relationships with allies and worldwide markets and all the things that impact those things. Colin seems to be inadvertently asking for both worldwide autarchy and political isolationism, both of which are so impossible in the modern world (unless you’re North Korea, I guess) that it’s not even worth arguing about, frankly. In the real world, America is the dominant force in the world and we benefit from that in many, many ways. Yes, we have problems here, but we could certainly have a lot more! If America were to only tend to its own strictly-defined-by-Colin internal interests, either another country like China would fill that void or more likely, as you say, it would be a return to regional power conflicts and isolationist America eventually being sucked back in to world wars.

zepplinmike

Listening to him in these conversations, I think he tends to be a maximalist about these things. He was fully on board for the Iraq War. That didn’t work out, so he pendulum swings to the complete opposite position. I would say maybe the wisest option sits somewhere in the middle and these extremely complicated ever-changing issues can’t be boiled down to a one-sentence stance that you don’t move on for 20 years.

Gabriel Prégent Terborch

Absolutely, he seems to think in some way that thinking of yourself first means thinking of yourself only

Gabriel Prégent Terborch

Absolutely, the proper technocratic approach to politics is pragmatic, not dogmatic, and case by case, not across the board blanket decision making

Gabriel Prégent Terborch

Is an interior designer/decorator's work less artful because the furniture is Ikea versus from a local artist who made them by hand?

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

We are both paying Colin to be here. Maybe we should both take the nuts out then?

Gabriel Prégent Terborch

Sure, but only one of us is white knighting and getting mad at the other for respectfully engaging with the content of the stream

JT Russell

Fucking excellent, thoughtful, classy, discussion on two friends. Really fucking good stuff guys. Cheers 👏

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

You got a weird definition of white knighting and getting mad my guy. I just think its weird to make so many separate comments. Perhaps try to put all of this into 1 comment?

zepplinmike

Yes I agree that the director or designer role is certainly an artist. Someone with Colin’s point of view might say that, like movies, games merge together several different art forms into a cohesive artistic result. The art also comes from the writing, the music, the acting, the visual art, the animation, and more. Even just one of these elements being left to gen AI would lose the human touch for that piece and could negatively impact that aspect and therefore the overall product. Personally, I’m a little more open to a future where SOME games use gen AI for SOME elements. I actually would be very interested to try a Skyrim-like RPG where all the NPCs can talk forever and the AI basically is a DM coming up with interesting stories for you based on however you interact with the world. Even then, I definitely would still want most games to be authored experiences and would worry about overuse and over-reliance on AI.

Germanos

I'm screaming my guts out here on how fruitless the conversation about DLSS is. The problem is much more fundamental. God I wish I could sitting next to you guys xD The problem is not just that the tech interprets what the character is and uses data it has reach to, to generate a fitting image into the 3D model. The key thing that Jaffe does not understand is that people feel emotions towards things done by HUMANS. This why we listen yo music, watch sports and are amazed by tech... crafted by humans. So even though "90% people don't give a shit", doesn't mean they would they would pay for it (would you buy season tickets for a basketball game played by cyborgs?) and once they know it is not human, they would lose interest in an instant after consumption. So now the AI becomes a magic trick - you are excited at first, but once you know what was behind it... you don't give a f. And now the big part: there is no going back. Once we establish this, games as we know it will be done for. And we will be in an era of constant short-term fun. Can someone make Colin read this please 😅.

Walker Simmons

I don't understand people like Jaffe who say they only care about the end product with AI. Doesn't the steps making the product all determine how it ends up? Imagine Evil Dead being made with none of the difficulties that crew had to go through that forced them to improvise and create such a flawed charming classic

Germanos

You are comparing something created to evoke emotions to something created to be useful. AI used for efficiency makes sense, while it does not for creating ART.

Germanos

I listen to them on YouTube day or two after the strea. What's the problem?

Davario

Fuck that Drawn to Death superchat comment was so petty! Show us your game design acumen commenter.

Germanos

I comment as the show goes to various takes and topics, as there are many during the show. Totally a normal thing. #standdown

Germanos

I love Colin's take on US politics vs. the world: "We will force you all to use $ for oil trade and our financial systems, banks, etc., but when it becomes too heated... you are on your own" :-D

Murderer Kevin

This isolationist line of thinking is delusional in the modern world. We all need resources that other countries have and develop. If only the US were isolationist and didn't bomb other countries for fabricated reasons (WMD... X2)

Xenomorph Moriarty

If you use Ai for art you are not creating anything and you aren’t even remotely an artist. Period.

I will never understand how there are people in the U.S. who, to this day, still don’t understand that the United States is an empire. I’d like to think it’s ignorance rather than intellectual dishonesty. Also, Chile has its own 9/11. 1973 in fact. The U.S. government helped destabilize Salvador Allende’s elected government and paved the way for Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, which it supported. That’s how empires work.

zepplinmike

Yes and I think your point is also along the lines of what Colin was trying to say. In another thread here a few of us identified that Jaffe possibly does value the human input but thinks having just one human involved and directing the AI is enough to get that. It seems he especially thinks that if the work the AI produces is "better" anyway. My first concern there would be that he thought the output of DLSS 5 was clearly better than the human-made work, whereas I sincerely think every single AI-made example shown looked like shit.

Gooch Gobbler

Guys, PLEASE NO MORE AI TALK. We have heard every angle of Colin vs Jaffe on AI, you guys both can't help yourselves from giving the same rebuttals to each other. Ironically, you kind of end up sounding like those two AIs talking to each other on an endless loop . That being said, always love the Jaffe episodes outside of this topic!

Deemac

I mean tbh I think this is just what you're gonna get when there are so many Jaffe episodes - and not just talking about the AI topic, chances are they'll retread old ground and just keep repeating themselves on various things. That's why I'd prefer Jaffe to be a once a month (or so) podcast, so they could have topics of conversation build up and it'd be the better for it imo. I realise I'm in the minority on this it seems, but that's my take anyway. Having Jaffe on every other week will get old

Dikkbig Though

You’re confused on what I’m saying. Someone STILL made that furniture at IKEA. It wasn’t 3D printed. The designer used that to make a room look good. Do you think IKEA goes around saying they are interior designers? No That’s what Jaffe’s getting at. He doesn’t care where the product is coming from. He just wants it to look good. But that cheapens the product. Art SHOULDN’T be made by everyone because everyone is not as good at everything. That’s weird.

Germanos

Well said boys 🤙

Gabriel Prégent Terborch

Ikea furniture is made in a factory highly automated on an assembly line, hardly what would be considered craftsmanship and art, yet the work of an interior designer using Ikea furniture to fill a room would be considered art.

Joshua

What a nice little convienant box to comfort yourself with

Joshua

You're being weird homie

Joshua

Decorating with anything is art Manufacturing millions of the same desk isn't art.

hopscotchington

It is too bad. But at least they can enrich their own countries! I think its time for them to "have access to the best and brightest in the whole world"!

PixelJunkie76

I don't understand what these two AI are talking about? I am so confused. Why has one generated a cookie goblin in the background? Does the AI on the right like cookies? We should look into this.

WhatDarrenPlays

I guess he is saying can an “artist” (game director) use things created by machines and orchestrate them in a way that makes the final product as a whole, “art” rather than the sum of its parts individually being creative. He tried to illustrate that a piece of ai generated furniture (for argument) on its own is creatively bankrupt, but when an interior decorater puts it together in a unique way, it can be creative.

Sweet Feather-Head Jones

It's not going to happen. You can tell when Colin is set on something. This content isn't for Patreon. It's for their YouTube business.

The world is covered with ruins of empires who thought themselves eternal. History doesnt forget, and crushes whoever it has to.

Do you like fish sticks?

I honestly don't even think the politics discussed here was that bad. I was more triggered by Jaffe's AI simping lmao

Stephen

Yes, seriously. No more Colin on AI.

Walk Forward Cutscene

Keep telling yourself that as your Chicom empire population halves by 2100 due to that genius one child policy.

Christopher Hoff

I don't always agree with Jaffe, but I always enjoy his appearances and the conversation.

Tom Griffin

How can a designer be proud of what they designed if they used AI to do the designing. I really am stumped at how someone who created games can be so in on AI in this way. "I don't care about how we get there, I only care about that the players get the experience we want them to" - Jaffe doesn't realize that with DLSS5, the experience isn't what you intended. It never will be. It's a contradiction. And that's the point. If I play RE9 with DLSS5 I'm not playing the game as intended by the devs. I'm playing a fake version of it. It diminishes the art form, because it replaces inhuman imperfections that come with the intent of the creator. I don't want to play an AIs interpretation of a game. I want to play the game as the devs intended. We undermine the effort, creativity and artistic brilliance of those in the industry by indulging in this crap.

Kevin Cooper

I don't need to Platinum every game, but I can't imagine not finishing a game that I started. It would have to be unbelievably bad for me to bail on it, and I struggle to even think of one that I bailed on. But if you're a content creator that behavior totally makes sense, obviously.

Not a Sexbot..

Hey how’s that draft age increase going to affect Collins’s view now?🤭
