It's made the game better to play and added QoL updates, but ultimately it's still the same game at its core - a few patches won't change that. It's a single player MMO with tons of basic fetch quests and devoid of narrative, but gives you a ton of tools to mess around in this massive open world, where you could probably spend hundreds of hours. To some people that sounds like a horrible game to play, to others it will be endless fun. I've got the game out of curiosity and am like 4/5 hours in and have got very irritated by some of the things you are sent to do - whether they're so simple it's boring, or if it's something that takes an excessive amount of time to defeat an endless group of enemies, where you're just button mashing really. By this games standards I'm very early clearly, but I absolutely see why so many people get pissed off at this game early and pack it in. I also completely understand all the 7/10s. Next game I'm interested in is Pragmata, so I'll keep with it til then at least. But I often find myself just wanting to boot up Marathon tbh It's worth a shot if you've heard all the impressions from various people and are still even somewhat interested

As to Lock's criticism of DLSS 5 critics: I am fairly certain that thanks to the backlash, there will actually be major changes to how the model works, maybe including more specific developer controls. Also if the quality of the model doesn't vastly improve AND actually work on devices people have access to, it'll probably die out from lack of use more than anything. My specific concern, by the way, is how this implementation of AI works, in that it overwrites the developer's work with a one-size-fits-all supposedly (but not actually) photorealistic look. I'm less concerned about the devs themselves using AI tools with a high level of human input and authorship, so I don't really see how boycotting the devs themselves would be addressing this specific issue. I would hope they would share these concerns about not having control over the final results of how their games look. By the way, Bethesda is a funny example in this case because I feel they already heavily lean on modding to clean up, patch, and fill out their games, especially on PC. As a player of most of their games' PC versions and fan of those modding scenes, I've long felt like their games are more of a canvas that is highly customizable. In this way, their specific inclusion in the DLSS 5 presentation was least offensive to me, although I still think the results looked bad. For most other games, like RE9, I would only want to play the actual authored content without mods or AI filters that make significant alterations, at least the first time through.

Tyrone Yhip

This game is fuckin AWESOME! END of, bottom line!

Crimson Desert is ADDICTING af

Publix Chicken tender sub

When you kill enemies and there clothes comes off it means they dropped actual gear for example like a chest piece.

Jason Bolla

Lot of love for Capcom IP in this ... But no Breath of Fire talk. Need a collection like the MM series so we can maybe get a 7th that's well funded.

Publix Chicken tender sub

Dragons dogma! , dragons dogma! dragons dogma ! Matty!!😂😂😂😂 you guys crack me up 😂 hey Dragons Dogma 1 and 2 are a masterpiece 🙏🙌🏼🔥

BamAHamYum

“They do tell you who it is but it’s one sentence”😂😂

Brandyn Ramos

Did you see the post capcom made that seems to be hinting at a dlc taking place in the north? 🫢 There’s a character that’s not in the game wearing gear that’s not in game and he’s the only one not facing like everyone else with blue icy hue around him. Plus the not in the forefront says griffins spotted coming from the north…. Soooooo 🥶

Your Boi Nicky V

GOATed trio. Thanks for answering my write in.

Nick F

There’s no way they’ll be able to “sneak” in DLSS5, as it won’t be available on consoles. It’ll be interesting to see how they choose to show these games, and what trailers will be like, only to look completely different on hardware that isn’t nvidia.

Ben Bailey

Would Brad please just let Lock talk for 10 seconds uninterrupted once??

Slippery when wet

O please. Lock is right. Speaking with your wallet is all that matters. Nobody cares who get on the internet and whines and complains. If it doesn’t affect these big corpos pockets, sorry to say, they’ll implement what they see best and what makes them the most profit, in any way shape or form. They dont care about your feelings, (and not YOU, but the royal US), they care about their bottom line and return on investments.

Slippery when wet

The companies bottom line will be what affects the big corpos AI future. If we don’t like it, Lock is completely right, only way to stop it is to hit them financially. Unfortunately we are in the minority and little Timmy on the coach that’s excited about GTA 6, doesn’t give a single fuck if the game has generative AI in it or not. AI will only get bigger and more streamlined and we have to unfortunately deal with it.

zepplinmike

I generally actually agree, but negative PR can indeed affect their bottom line in the form of stock prices, which for publicly traded companies can unfortunately matter more than actual revenue. They wanted this reveal to make a big positive splash for them and instead it caused a small dip in their stock price. They’ll want to avoid that again whenever they re-reveal it or launch it. Also the idea is to get devs to actually use it, and in a way that is seen as desirable and will increase adoption. So for that reason they’ll want to be at least somewhat responsive to the concerns of the actual developers (and not just their bosses). Again though, where I part with Lock is that boycotting the devs is the direct logical response. I would agree with the idea of boycotting Nvidia cards since it’s their tech. I already have a 5090 so my personal recourse would be to never turn this on unless they make big changes, especially if it still looks like ass.

Ray

Yeah, that segment was strange. Lock was trying to explain his rationale and Brad kept cutting him off.

Matt Wiles

That was a really good debate around Crimson Desert. Great to hear opposing views and debate it out. I don’t normally comment - and I’m a long time subscriber - but I want to say; I’ve REALLY enjoyed Lock’s contribution over the last cohort of months. His mailbag was 10/10. Now this. Just enjoying his views and detailed ‘review’ of a game. All round good episode so far.

PixelJunkie76

Lockmort! I'm not sure you are aware, but you are bald. Matty and Bradley should let Lock know he is bald. So bald.

WhatDarrenPlays

It was unusual to see Brad so passionate, but I think he was just missing Locks point and I can see why. Lock was arguing that maybe like Abby in The Last of Us, you don’t know who she is yet and you’ll find out later. Brad instead was saying he needed a reason to play as this person or a clue as to who she is. I think for the type of game this is, (not a super serious brooding narrative) Brad’s expectation is fair. But I side with Lock, give it time, maybe there’s more to be found with her later.

Jayce Tamulevich

This year is going to be such a hot debate between “RE9 is too short” and “you need to give Crimson Desert dozens of hours to get to the good stuff.”

Frank G.

I never even liked Bethesda anyway.

My wafflehouse hashbrowns

No offence because I absolute love lockmort but didn’t he love avowed at the start . Maybe i made that up .

TheWubbz

I’m here got the Lock villain arc. “YOU ARE SLOP” lol

Jason Rose

I’m going to be honest here and don’t get me wrong, I love Lock on these shows and his perspective is generally wholly unique. Oftentimes, though, his critiques go completely unchallenged, so unlike y’all, I liked that Brad was pushing back and ultimately, I agree with him, games have to give you something, anything to care about their characters, or why should I?

Master Rahl

Lock is so wrong here it’s baffling lol

LongJohnSivers#1Fan

I love the differing opinions on this episode. You don't get that a lot on this network. Especially if Colin is on the show, people tend to agree with him on everything. It was refreshing to hear Lockmort challenging talking points about CD. He clearly played it a good deal and appreciated it.

Derek Alcott

I really enjoyed the discussion around Crimson Desert. It's nice to hear different opinions on the game. You guys laid on your points very well.

C

Fantastic debate on CD, need much more of that.

Jason Thompson

Crimson Desert doesn’t hold your hands and it seems like people that rely on the games holding your hands gripe about the little things that they think is wrong with the game

Derek Hart

My biggest issue with Crimson Desert is the information overload. Also sidequests can be really confusing. It took me over an hour just trying to figure out how to make one shitty bowl of fish porridge, only to realize that I had to make 3 🤦‍♂️

Snowbound

Lock appears to be new to planet earth, a place where popular opinion can, in fact, affect change. "Companies only listen to people voting with their wallets" Ok but what if awareness of a topic affects how people vote with their wallets? Lock, if everyone shut up about it and stopped being "so annoying", do you honestly think Nvidia wouldn't love that? That should tell you something.

Snowbound

Objecting to valid criticism in a discussion about first impressions because "maybe it'll get better later" is a very weird hill to die on

Andrew Morgan

Matt’s a pussy for not wanting kids….(all in jest….kind of lol)

Lockmort

On planet earth, companies listen to money, not words. They don't care what you have to say, as long as you buy their products. They didn't cancel DLSS5 after all the public backlash, but instead called you "wrong" (the CEO's words, not mine). If you feel strongly about it, and don't buy Starfield next week, much respect. If you do, it's just noise. Currently, after everything, it's PSN's #1 preorder. -Lock

PairOfShuse

I 100 percent agree with Locke on this episode. People bitching about AI need to put up or shut up. Do you know how many games I’ve been interested in but because of my personal beliefs on some things I decided not to buy them? People need to stick to their guns and regardless if the a game you love or franchise you love, hold your ground I love Final Fantasy. But if a FF game came out and it was done with this DLSS 5 BS and it looked like the glossy fake looking AI images in motion, I would pass. I just think it’s inferior art.

Cameron Sturre

Matty, dragons dogma 2 was literally a quarter of a game. Absolute dogshit. Never regretted a day one purchase more in my life.

Cameron Sturre

Hearing you say this game felt ‘very complete’ is genuinely fucking insane, brother DID you play that game

Andrew

Lock loves every jank rpg and crpg that comes out so take his opinions with a grain of salt. I bought Stalker 2 because he made it sound like a GOTY but it just made me realize he's an autistic European.

NeO JD

Lock is right on: everybody will hate the filter, but they’ll still buy the games anyway.

Jay

I think crimson desert would’ve really benefited from having no main story at all. Have the introduction be creating the camp then letting the player happen upon fun, cool, weird storylines, similar to faction questlines in bethesda games. It seems like that already since the beginning quests don’t seem to be very connected at all. It would’ve been more interesting if i were to discover the goblin merchant quest rather than the game just pointing it out calling it the “main story”.

Lockmort

Stalker 2 is awesome. Triangle goes into the square hole. - Lock

Michael Rogers

"Keep my Dragons Dogma out your fuckin mouth!" Thank you Matty, you're a real one for that. Had to come late just to say that.

Snowbound

Dude, you cannot be serious. Companies backtrack due to public pressure all the time. You're not a young child so I'm fairly certain you remember the Xbox one launch, that's just one example. Sure, a lot of the time they double down instead, but the point is that people yelling about stuff online has a somewhat decent success rate. Look man I get it, outrage can be cringe and annoying, but it absolutely can work. Helldivers and battlefront 2, another 2 off the top of my head. I thought the Helldivers backlash was dumb as fuck, but hey those angry gamers got what they wanted. For better or worse, popular opinion affects change, and I'll explain why because you seem to have missed my point the first time round. Do you understand the concept of bad PR? Companies hate having bad PR because it results in lost sales. There's your "vote with your wallets" argument. What people are saying about a thing has a direct influence on it's success. Exactly how much influence is not always quantifiable, but it does have it. Nvidia/Bethesda/etc don't think this particular instance of bad PR will hurt them in the long run, that the pros of ai generated artwork outweigh the cons on the business end. Every chance they are correct one day, but shouldn't we hold onto whatever influence we might have as regular people? Telling people to shut up because words don't matter at all, is brainless, and ignoring reality.

Lockmort

I got your point, and think it's perfectly valid in all the cases you listed, but there's 1 major difference here. We're not talking about a singular game, console, product, or instance, like the examples you gave, which again, were all valid. DLSS5 is being implemented in multiple games over multiple studios. Nvidia couldn't care less about public backlash against this one feature, because in this case, you're not their customer. The following game studios are: Capcom, Bethesda, Ubisoft, etc... That's why they called you "wrong" and simply moved on. These companies already bought in and won't be able to reverse that. If it was just 1 game from 1 studio, public backlash could work, but we're talking about something much bigger here, spread over multiple entities. The studios will say they'll improve on it, and that'll be it for now. So the only message you can send, is to not buy the games from the companies who openly support it. In turn, they'll hopefully eventually look inward as to why they're losing sales and renegotiate their DLSS support or implementation. Since Starfield is currently PSN's #1 preorder, after all the public backlash, mainstream articles, endless videos, and opinions about it, I sadly doubt anything will happen. That's why I said words don't mean anything, but I should've worded it in a nicer or better way. Emotions obviously run high when discussing AI, and I don't blame anyone for calling me names or ignorant or whatever else there is (not that you did that), but there's a lot more nuance to it. I appreciate the candid discussion though, we need more of that. - Lock

VanB-Boy 4 life

Crimson desert sounds like a game to check out in 1-2 years after patches and 50% off.

Bert Chintus

this discussion having opposing perspectives was a lot of fun!

The Big Bong

For Lock ist everything and everyone AWESOME

Ryan

Lock seems to argue positively for crimson desert in ways that any other game would be criticized, but that the game is actually doing some ‘140iq Le epic How Crimson Desert Lies to You (I’m shaking)’ when in reality it’s euro jank coded. I also love the game lol

Save The Game Media

I don’t agree with Lock on the “don’t buy Elder Scrolls take” I have an AMD card, consoles use AMD - we’re not allowed to buy Elder Scrolls because we disagree with NVIDIA’s AI slop filter? We can’t even use it - nor can most since only 5000 series cards can use it. I think it’s completely acceptable to voice your displeasure so developers know we don’t want this. If Gen AI is in the final product, that is where my line is

Fotis Lyto

I don't know why people are being so negative towards crimson desert, it's so weird. Also Brad saying that enemies' clothes "disappeared" was wrong. The clothes fly out of them and you can pick it up.

Kevin Cooper

Brad arguing with Lock about character information made me uncomfortable. Like kid-in-the-backseat-while-your-parents-argue uncomfortable lol.
