Pleasure Spiked With Pain | Sacred Symbols, Episode 407

Things are quiet recently. It feels like we're waiting for something to pop-off; some new announcements, or tantalizing rumors, or whatever. We have a little of that this week, though -- perhaps as usual -- it's good news mixed-up with a few questionable items. Let's start with PS5 sales, which picked up substantially in the days leading up to the hardware's global price increase. We then move into the surreptitious release of once-hidden Grand Theft Auto Online numbers, which shows a game still making around $10 million a week, with around two-thirds of its playerbase on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Then, we get into first and second party fare: More details about the unannounced (but heavily rumored) Faye-driven God of War spinoff, casting and performance capture details for Hideo Kojima's PHYSINT, word of a Bloodborne animated feature in the works, and a Metal Gear Solid film, too, both being steered by Sony Pictures. And did Insomniac's Spider-Man 3 get leaked, too? Inquiries from the audience help us round things out, as always. Why is PlayStation 2 Colin's least-favorite Sony console? Is there room for the point-and-click adventure genre in modern gaming? Will Xbox really go back down the path of exclusivity? Can we act as an effective billboard for a listener's pregnancy announcement? A new episode of Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast launches each Friday morning. I appreciate you reading my write-in, and I’m sorry to hear Jaffe’s dog also passed away. I’m sure it’s very hard for him as well. Sad week (but these shows are great).

Chris saying “speak a little Japanese for em Derek!” is elite ball knowledge.

The Sears in my town has also just been an abandoned Sears for 7 years. Its a stand alone building in a plaza.

Gaming while dad I never know if my thoughts merit a write in but I’ve long contemplated pulling together a list of real tips that describe my experience playing video games while having two kids under 5. So here it goes - Your sleep schedule changes about every 3 months. So does the windows of playing games. - After about 4 months the kid will start having actual bed times. That means post 7 pm is kinda earliest you’d get a few hours of uninterrupted times. - Highly recommend taking nights in shifts with your partner. - Prioritize relationship, sleep, exercise over games for the first year. Wash the pump parts, go to bed, eat healthy when you get extra time — otherwise you’ll be useless to your hobbies and the people around you. - Keep a gaming journal bc you’ll forget what you were doing. - If you want to play more than 3 games a year, platinums are you a young mans game - Same rule as platinums as for jrpgs. 70+ hour games are tough. - If you bought a game and don’t like it after 5 hours, stop playing. You have more money than time… unless you don’t , in which case, go get more money. You have a kid now. - Protect a weekly game night with your friends. I’ve had the same group play weekly for years now and it kept me going through tough transitions like becoming a parent. - All these things change as they age but going from one kid to two was the biggest hit to hours played in a week not going 0 to one. - I average 10- 12 hours a week with a full time remote job that is VERY flexible for reference. - Handhelds help, anything that lowers the barrier to be playing like quick resume, mobile, even being able to disconnect controllers and hold a kid like a switch helps. - At my stage I like pc because I can close off my office from toddlers grabbing crap off my desk and I can have a dedicated place that doesn’t have kids crap all over the place. The rest of my house is a shit show and it’s hard to relax in the same room as mess for me. I have a lot more I’ve learned but the big rule is that everything changes about every 3-4 months and two was WAY more disruptive than 1. My current set up is steam deck / pc for convenience and performance. Thank god for steam deck. Sorry for the novel.

To add to this... every baby is different. I have two, with totally different behaviors and strategies to apply. One slept all the time, and one couldn't fall asleep. Games are not essential. Focus on the kids, and as time goes on, you as a dad will understand how YOUR baby works. Then you think about video games.

Germanos

Hmm, if only Chris realized that maybe, just potentially, the reason he's not as excited about video game releases today is because he's not sixteen anymore.

Frickitive

Totally, and get a dummy controller for the kid! They just see you hitting buttons, they don’t know it’s not moving the character on the screen.

Darren Mifsud

Playing Saint Slayer, listening to Sacred Symbols. Loving it.

The Vietnam joke and "we will put a shotgun in your fucking mouth" is wild. That was too funny 😂
