It's me, Colin. Please welcome journalist and writer Alyssa Mercante to Sacred Symbols+. Though I've heard of Alyssa and knew her name for some time, it wasn't until a few-ish years ago that she more properly popped onto my radar. It was then that the dreaded Sweet Baby Inc. Crisis (a moniker I just now made up) erupted, and Alyssa -- then at publication Kotaku -- was one of the most visible media-types covering the affair. Now, with the Slay the Spire II-slash-Anita Sarkeesian situation unfolding before us, it felt like a great time to sit down and talk things through. This whole scenario is, after all, a distinct echo from the past. To keep things simple, we started with a basic premise and then went off from there: Did Anita Sarkeesian ultimately lose the culture war? Why does her name still resonate more than a decade after so-called GamerGate kicked-off? Can the victors of these sorts of fights simply not accept that they now wield the power they once coveted? And perhaps most importantly of all: Why can't more people have conversations just like the one we've conducted? There's a lot to get to, so let's not delay further. Please enjoy.

Unemployable troon

Your right leaning fans will react a lot more maturely to this compared to how the left leaning ones did to stuttering Craig

Tanner Brant

Been looking forward to this episode!

pbsandwich_

wow that name and profile pic? you’re a loser dude. go touch grass

Madsines

Yeah, we can all see from your username you’re an incredibly mature individual.

Unemployable troon

Oh you don’t like it? Shame. I thought it was pretti funny

Noah

The use of “you’re”, the profile pic/ name, and the comment you made all about add up!

A Hind D

Excited for this!

Fat Gotenks

“She’s only giving me one hour.”

Mog

Report this guy. Name is totally over the line.

Chris Evans

Ready to lose some brain cells listening to this one

Unemployable troon

Well you got me, it’s edited. Sucks you’re not impressed with my choice of user name, but I’m not worried about what any of you cry babies are into.

Chris Evans

Very bad taste, just like the people that make fun of Charlie Kirk. Mocking someone’s death is unacceptable

Deemac

Always a points scoring exercise with you dorks isn't it, grow up ffs. I'm not even American so typically couldn't give a fuck about your politics, I just find these sort of comments embarrassing

pbsandwich_

might be the worst rage bait i’ve ever seen. keep practicing on twitter you’ll see plenty more degenerates like yourself who’s better at this kind of thing.

Unemployable troon

Okay 🤷‍♂️ peanut butter lover is also spelled wrong

Daddy T

Alright big fudge, thanks for letting us know

Orb Ponderer

Classless loser shit with that name and profile picture.

BigDumbStupidIdiot

Video games have a lot of right/left-wing culture vultures that are constantly recycling the same boring conversation. I can't believe we're still talking about too much or too little representation. Just make good characters, man

Lunar Tear

Fuel for my P3R Abyss of Time run.

Addison117

Haven't finished the episode yet but on side note she needs to be back for a long Island episode.

Michael Alaimo

This was an awesome conversation. It’s really cool to hear from someone who I only hear about from twitter lol

AL022

Very interested to listen soon! Next most interesting, however, will be to see what kind of blowback Alyssa gets by appearing here from her own circles.

Ryan

Remington James

I did not expect in the first 40 minutes for her to sound so reasonable and her arguments to be so well formulated. She has definitely made me consider quite a bit. Fantastic interview!

Jason Rose

Alyssa is the classic example of social media bringing about the worst in people. I say this as when you sit and talk with — most — people they’re so much more than that. Maybe Alyssa Mercante has softened over the last few years, but this is a person who comes across well here and I’ve enjoyed the first hour of this show quite a lot. I’ll admit I rolled the eyes a touch when I saw the subject matter, but I was wrong on this one. Sadly like Colin said, so many on “that side” neither have the inclination, chops for it, or just won’t out of sheer ignorance, to actually talk to someone you mildly disagree with. Anyway, great job on this.

trephiroth

These are the types of conversations that I look for not only in the gaming space, but outside of it in politics as well. Two people who generally disagree, finding common ground while still disagreeing elsewhere and being okay with it. This has become increasingly rare over the past 10 years so when I find it, it hits. Good shit, Colin.

Jason Rose

Yaaaaa, Colin had someone on a few years ago that completely dispels this nonsensical notion.

Jason Rose

I think you’ll be surprised man.

Cloud

That was such an awesome conversation! Like Colin, I don't agree with Alyssa on very much but she comes across as way more personable and likable in a podcast/interview format than she does in her writing. Surprisingly, I was actually glad the conversation went almost two hours instead of just one like was originally planned and I wasn't ripping my hair out the entire time 😂 I would definitely be interested in hearing her on a normal episode!

Evan Westendorf

Anyone who had a problem w this very normal conversation is totally self-reporting.

Michael Welter

Dude...Great fuckin conversation. That was a joy to listen to. Really hope Alyssa comes back to talk games she was a delight.

Michael Welter

Garbage person. This exact video was for losers like you. Shame you dont have a fuckin brain to comprehend it with.

Pretty Much Satan

Great job Colin! Echo the sentiment of the many here, glad this talk finally happened. Alyssa seems to hand wave a lot of Colin’s points away or gloss over them with vaguries - I know he didn’t set this up to be a debate… It was great to hear her side of things and I’d love more conversations with her and others on “her side” - but she just seems fueled by grievances and drawing conclusions based on race, sex and such - denying any of the points Colin would make without anecdotal points. Lastly, it also felt like she really didn’t understand his point - or didn’t want to engage - about the left wing cancel culture and control over the game space and why that’s had the effect we’re seeing now with right-leaning people acting the way they do.

Pat Montgomery

More chats like this, felt almost like a fireside chat.

Chuck Lit

I give Alyssa a lot of respect for doing this. She is a really good speaker—it has given me a whole other perspective of her.

Brandon A

I really enjoyed this. Especially the part about how we’ve forgotten the concept of humanity. Alyssa seems like a perfectly reasonable human being who doesn’t deserve to be vilified.

King0fChickens 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Amazing interview, no idea who she is in terms of her work but I think she was a great person to interview, had some good points, spoke well and was funny in parts. Seems very likeable, great interview!

Dante B

Been looking forward to it and it was a great conversation. I think a lot of the friction around Alyssa is that she does not present herself in this calm, measured way, most of the time. At least not historically. And to be fair, she acknowledges that a bit too when she talks about navigating the space early on. Well done all around and would look forward to another conversation down the line.

Dante B

Also one call out - she called out Micah “not counting” in the diversity tally of LSM but that’s because Colin just referred to her as his wife, I don’t think she realizes she’s a host and key player on the network too.

Dakota Brown

I’m glad this conversation happened. The reason I couldn’t stand the Stuttering Craig episode because he randomly decided to go off on trans people for no reason. Even if you disagree with her takes, she at least stayed on topic and expressed herself in an articulate manner.

Michael Welter

Did you even watch the fuckin episode?

zepplinmike

Loved this! By the second half the conversation felt as comfortable as any with Last Stand regulars so hopefully she will be back as mentioned at the end.

zepplinmike

Right, I noticed that too but also clocked that she had just asked about the diversity of the hosts and didn’t realize he was saying she was one.

zepplinmike

What you say about ppl on social media is totally true. Colin even admitted in this episode as much about his 5+ years ago social media persona. On top of the impulses that come in from having a knee-jerk reaction to someone and being able to respond to them without having to look them in the eye, each platform has its own specific culture and incentives. For Twitter, the whole meta game is to dunk on people and make them look stupid. On BlueSky, the game seems to be about policing who is the most pure progressive. These are games where no one actually looks better in the end in a real sense so, like WarGames, the best move is probably not to play.

Carlos

Great conversation!

Risen

I must admit this is someone I prejudged simply from how reviled she is in the brainrotted circles. “Ok she is probably crazy.” Seems like a relatively normal, sweet gal. Would love to see her back more often as she seems to be a natural fit.

Bogey

This was an excellent conversation and she’s clearly very intelligent, but damn she interrupts Colin a lot lmao. It was hard for him to get a whole thought out

William Harding

I think they are both just enthusiastic yappers haha.

Josh McKinney

That was great! The rapport was really good, in the upper echelon of people that Colin has on. You really need to invite her back and talk to her about games, maybe on Summon Sign!

David Balfour

Alyssa was a fantastic guest! It would be awesome to have her on again and maybe on Summon Sign or a spoiler cast.

Tyrone Yhip

See this is why Colin is the man, and props to Alyssa as well, sincerely. I really dont say this lightly but these days it seems, the ability to sit and speak with each other (regardless whether they agree or disagree), is lost on so many. This was and is a great conversation from both. I really enjoyed and encourage more of this, not just in a gaming space but in general life.

They Now Call Me UNC.

What I disagree with is individuals in media and the industry who hate the fact that the majority of gamers are men. It’s like a straight man, studying cosmetology, complaining about being called gay, getting harassed and ridiculed while trying to enter a profession that is dominated by women. Obviously that’s unfortunate, and the people doing that are losers who just want to see you lose hope and fail. But now the people who have broken through those barriers and have sustained the harassment, now want to force messages and gaslight the public that the space is so diverse and we MUST adhere to the minorities because that is the right thing to do. What ever happened to letting really talented creatives make really fun games? That sounds like a better plan.

Michael Welter

Definitely, near the end they were a couple chatty Kathy's about Long Island. It was nice and refreshing to see honestly. Two people who very much disagree politically but can still talk and have a civil discourse. Loved it.

Pretty Much Satan

I enjoyed the conversation- and I’ll preface the next part so I don’t get dogpiled too hard - but I do wish these types of conversations sometimes had more push back. I understand it’s an extremely slippery slope because you don’t want to attack someone, and everyone feels different under pressure - but some of the sentiments she shared just fly in the face of plenty of data and anecdotes were primarily her only reference which is basically the “trust me bro” meme. I’d love to hear a more nuanced and researched debate/discussion but I know it’s difficult because that’s not entirely what Colin aims to do - it just sucks because he is one the very few who is outside the “status quo” who speaks out who I think could easily espouse and defend these ideas in a debate forum.

Lunar Tear

Strong episode. Keep em' coming.

Kendrick Calles (Ca-Yes)

That. That right there. That was a great episode. She was great. Great job Colin.

Johnny Lamotte

Great episode! I’m not fully finished with it, but glad these conversations are happening.

Dante B

Colin - just a heads up but Mouse PI platinum is definitely fixed.

Do you like fish sticks?

You can always bet that comments like these where left before they even hit play

Do you like fish sticks?

Guys like you obsessed with coming off like the smartest & most mature in the room...yet look at your name and image. Repulsive lmao

Chris Morton

I hope Alyssa really would come back. I feel like a lot of people on "her side" so to speak have a tendency to hold their nose and talk with people they disagree with for an hour or two and never do it again. On a long enough timeline I think she'd find some reason to distance herself even from someone as reasonable as Colin.

GunMetalJackal

Its like we've let ourselves be talked into believing the worst about people instead of going out there and actually hear people out.

Wesali

90% of this just seemed like word salad and dodging tough questions. But was still a good listen, would be interesting to get her back on to talk games on Summon Sign.

Chris Evans

Actually haven’t finished it but have been for the most part, I don’t necessarily agree with what she has to say but she hasn’t come across like the raving lunatic that she has tended to on social media certainly

Adam Martinez

This was a great convo. You were both a pleasure to listen to.

Addison117

Hopefully she is willing to come back either for summon sign or spoilercast in the future also that was a long 1 hour she gave you colin.

Ray

Great conversation. Alyssa talked about maybe taking issue with an FPS with someone who had mobility issues. Excuse me, but the wheelchair section in Wolfenstein was badass lol. PS: I know she was probably joking. Or used any example that came to mind

Beef Burka

At one time she was the opposite side of the coin to JT Smash, so she was doing the vilifying herself. Glad she seems to have seen the error in her ways.

PeptoiZall

Great chat and she is awesome. Would love to see her on summon sign or even a chat with jaffee. Great work Colin and shout out to Alyssa for coming on the show.

Tanner Brant

Great conversation! I really enjoyed this episode and hope Alyssa does come back to do a spoiler cast sometime!

Jacob Hey

This was absolutely Fantastic! She seems like a really cool and reasonable person. Bravo to everyone who made this interview happen.

PairOfShuse

While I give her credit for being respectful and well spoken, this went pretty much exactly how I expected it to go. Props though for her for actually coming on to talk. Most of them wouldn’t. There was a lot of deflection and acting like she didn’t take part in everything she was trying to sound reasonable on. While she has been attacked and awful things said about her, I’ve also seen her online being extremely nasty to people that didn’t deserve it either. It’s laughable how she talked about blusky. I’m about 153 percent tired of people on the left talking about how awful Twitter is (not that their aren’t problems like the monetization) but conveniently like to forget how Twitter was before Elon bought it. Extremely censorious, banning in one direction, constantly berating anyone to the right of Marx. And then blu sky is also one of the most toxic places on the internet from everything I’ve seen. Wasn’t there also the whole thing about so many people being pedophiles on there? One thing that I’m also so tired of is the oppression Olympics. Her bringing up Last stand trying to say it’s all white flew right in the face of something Colin said not that long before. Colin said well I can’t be went after traditionally since he’s white and male (which I disagree with, especially modern feminists who are some of the most sexist people I’ve ever seen talk) then she starts to essentially try to apply a purity test to Last Stand. Colin shouldn’t have to go through each employee to say what race there are to justify a point. Like I said, she was respectful and at least well spoken (even though her points were terrible in many ways, mainly because even when I agreed with her, I know she literally did the opposite of what she tried to say like treating people terribly online too). But I just don’t think she acts in good faith.

PairOfShuse

She even tried to say Last Stand was too white and Colin had to say Chris was Puerto Rican and Cog is black. That was honestly embarrassing IMO. Who the fuck cares - what matters is their thoughts on gaming and their character.

Your Boi Nicky V

Wow, what an amazing discussion. You can completely respect everything Alyssa said even if you disagree with her.

Miguel

I’m sorry but a big part of this conversation was just “ we’re all victims and marginalized”. Either rise above it or shut up!

BigDumbStupidIdiot

LSM is really diverse for a company its size. Diversity of thought usually creates an ethically diverse workforce. I'm glad Colin corrected Alyssa on that. I hope she comes onto more shows though. Alyssa 100% can talk shop on games

BigDumbStupidIdiot

She's from Long Island. They're professional yappers

David Seger

Amazing Sacred + episode. Great, and normal, conversation

Jesse V

Very charming. She would be great on Summoning Sign or Spoilercasts

WoodyBlock

Fantastic episode! I miss dialogue like this so much

Supes

absolutely agreed about the social media thing—I think it is genuinely the worst way to try and understand who someone is, because social media is literally engineered to make people act as mean and nasty to each other as possible to ensure engagement with the platform. I think about somebody like Nick Calandra—he's probably a super-nice guy in real life, but holy shit some of his Twitter posts in the past have made him come off like the biggest fucking asshole. That's why I don't have Twitter and never will.

Glitched

Amazing episode. Please do more stuff like this

Black Detective in Dexter

This comments section is really weird, just blindly praising this lady. Sure, she's not rude or anything. I guess we're at the point where we applaud people for just being able to have a civil conversation with someone they disagree with. That's how low the bar is. That being said, her entire identity is "representation, diversity, skin color, gender, sexual orientation, marginalized victim." Her entire world view is seen through this lense. It's exhausting. Also, I don't like anyone that calls Hasan Piker "the homie". That guy abuses his dog and is a complete psychopath.

Black Detective in Dexter

Colin- "Well, my wife is black" Alyssa- "That doesn't count!" Like what? The rules these people have are insane. Everything is about race, gender, etc. Exhausting.

Cai

Really really great conversation. Glad this happened!

KYisLife

Never heard of her but great conversation

Brian Syrett

Dope! Glad this convo finally happened. Makes my Long Island heart swell (probably all the Italian food, actually.) Hope Alyssa comes back for more discussions!

Guy Incognito

@Black Detective in Dexter That was regarding people with voices in the LSM network. She may not have known Micah is on a podcast, thus wasn’t counting her for representation.

Black Detective in Dexter

Right, I guess I just see people as people and not a check box for "representation".

Virgin Barry

There's a lot of straw-manning going on here. I think a disservice is being done to this conversation by using TJ Smash or whoever as the placeholder for the other side of the argument. Also, huge lol at Colin's wife being black "not counting". Dedicating your entire life to a black woman isn't even enough for these people if >50% of your podcast staff is white.

JustOkJeremy

She was talking about the podcasts and I don’t think she realized Micah does the Nintendo show

X

She was awesome, hope she does more shows with LSM.

An optimistic Bears fan

Great conversation. It was nice to hear her speak and elaborate some of her points of view. Wouldn't mind having her come back.

Screwed Mcfucked

@Big Fudge " I think it's worth to have a cost, of unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year. So that we can have the second amendment to protect our other god given rights" - Charlie Kirk RIP Bozo, making excuses for dead kids is deplorable

Jose Cantu

What a wonderful interview. Hope she comes back. Reminds me of way back in the Beyond days where people could just talk even though they had little in common. Makes things more interesting. Good job, Colin!

Seth Slykhuis

Never in a million years would I have thought that Alyssa Mercante would be a top 10 Sacred Symbols plus but here we are. This was phenomenal

robertOMGlolz

Another great conversation that didn’t play out I’m sure like most people might have expected. I’d love to see her back sometime.

whY Be

Such a great episode! Thank you for this interview, so important to have conversations like this one between reasonable people 🙏

Panda Junkie

Awesome get. I've been saying for years that Alyssa seems like a very normal person who just sometimes has stupid takes, but don't we all. People took shit way too far with far with her. Hope to see more conversations with people like this in the future.

Dead

She was delightful.

Cee Kaye

Did anyone expect her to be anything but cordial and polite. She defaults to grandstanding for minorities at every opportunity possible, it’s exhausting.

Ryan W

I appreciate the discussion, but would've liked a little more talk about the "forced" inclusion side of things. It was a lot of hand waiving about "these people exist" and "it's just a video game so why's it matter." Clearly it does or there wouldn't have been a push so hard in the first place. I'd love to hear her discuss why Assassin's Creed decided to not only find the one black samurai but have him be gay. It seems in line for one side to force it but downplay it for the other side. "It's not a big deal, stop talking about but also... it has to happen so shut up"

Garry

Just listened to this and a great time I love people disagreeing respectfully. She’s actually quiet funny and I hope she comes back

Frank G.

Let's fucking go!

Tom Miller

As others have said, she would be great to have on Summon Sign. Keep up the great conversations.

Appalachian Pulp

I know this may be an unpopular opinion but Colin barely pushed back on anything she said. She even told him Micah doesn’t count as if she doesn’t cohost her own podcast on this network. I want anyone to honestly ask if Colin has treated anyone on the opposite side as soft as this. Is the standard really as low as just being able to converse without calling him a bigot? I also question in which way did Anita lose the culture war? Her push changed many franchises and Neil Druckman openly supported her.

Nicholas Renaud

Great episode. I disagree with about 95% of what she says but that’s the fantastic thing about having multiple interviews. I loved it, great guest and keep it up Colin!

Kenneth Fox

The hilarious thing is if you asked these idiots how Anita impacted their experience of Slay The Spire II they couldn’t answer.

Ryan

Not knowing what ‘where’ and ‘were’ is, is pretty par for the course for room temperature iq people. Weird that there’s always a correlation with one side of the political spectrum

Stray_Bullets

That’s how I interpreted it too. It’s obvious Alyssa is not an avid listener of the product and didn’t really know who was involved beyond Gene. Doubt she knew that Micah was involved in Last Stand.

Stray_Bullets

Good episode. I enjoyed listening to her.

Stray_Bullets

My guy, I would imagine Alyssa does not listen to Last Stand, and therefore is not very familiar with the product or all people involved in it beyond Colin, and Gene, who she does also know. Her response to the “my wife” comment was based on her not knowing Colin’s wife is a co-host on the very product/ subject they were discussing. Also worth noting that the topic was brought up in the form of a question and not a declaration that he works with predominately white men. It wasn’t offensive if you ponder it for a second.

Toon In

This is one of the best conversations you've had! Definitely should have her back.

Captain Bon Clay

Colin’s confusion about why people are angry about Anita being part of slay the spire 2 confuses me, when he has said in the past if he played a game, and enjoyed it then found out that it was made using AI, it wouldn’t be a gotcha, it would be tricking him into playing something he wouldn’t want to play, I don’t see how this is any different

Mykal

Fantastic listen. Really great to hear a civilized conversation.

Guy Incognito

He didn’t push back with Stuttering Craig. Colin doesn’t need to press anyone, that’s not his prerogative; especially on his own shows.

Hozi

I'm not gonna lie, I think we found the next LSM member!

Unemployable troon

So after everyone’s whining and crying -your favorite police agitator is still dead -I didn’t change my name or pfp -and my OP was proven correct I’m sure there’s an allegory in life you could draw here for yourselves

Test24

She’s so great. I’ve only known her from the YouTube grifters perspective. She’s a gem! Hope she returns for games topics in the future

DogMeat

Collin I got my MSW last year! After my military service. So cool to hear your dad went a similar route

Adrian Pinter

Awesome conversation. Wasn’t too familiar with Alyssa but I believe this was an awesome and constructive conversation. Would love to hear her talk about games in deeper detail in the future!

Clay Layne

I genuinely enjoyed this conversation. Great one man. Not bad at all.

Jason Bolla

Great conversation. Always love these types of episodes.

Repede

Great ep

Corkumk

Great episode. More of this!

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

There was always a middle ground but that middle ground doesn't pay the bills. Games journalism kind of made it their business to stoke the flames over the past decade. Now they are on a false economy that is dying. The reality is that 99% of people land somewhere in the middle

mattyboy316

Awesome conversation and hope to hear from her on maybe summon sign in the future!

GlasgowRaider

This was excellent. Two articulate people with different views having a great conversation. World needs more of that. Would love to see/hear her on one of the shows talking about games.

Brent Mahaffey

This was such a great interview. Bring Alyssa back for sure!

Fat Matt

Excellent stuff! These conversations really do Set LSM apart.. along with just about everything else they put out. Love it

Fotis Lyto

Huh, one hour and twenty minutes of people beating around the bush. She says that "a black guy in a game wont hurt you" while all we heard for years was "why are there so many white guys in games" so a white guy hurts you but a black guy shouldn't hurt the other person? Also what do you mean Colin "you won" how? Can you tell me how we won and what?

lazer_josh

One of the best if the not best ss+ ive heard IMO

Steven

Yeah, I actually agree with this even though I think people getting upset over Anita being involved in Slay the Spire 2 is massive baby behaviour. The defense of "you didn't realise X played a role in making this game until we told you after the fact" is exactly the same whether you substitute in AI or Anita Sarkeesian, so it's logically inconsistent if you don't treat them the same.

hopscotchington

Good thing you were here to defend her. How could she know as she isn't a listener and doesn't have access to anything but blue sky

K. Huntington

she didn't "try to say lsm was to white" she just simply asked how much of the staff was white. there's a major difference.

Jaymin Ligsay

This. She asked if anyone in his company or hosts were of color. Colin saying “my wife is black” on first glance seems to be dodging the questions. Only we know how involved she is in the company.

Othtober

Great conversation. I didn't know of Alyssa before this, but have a healthy respect for her now. It isn't easy doing a show where both sides of the political spectrum expect a war. Good on both of you for having an actual discussion and understanding there is a person on the other end of the microphone. Thank you for this one.

lazer_josh

Wow two normal people having a normal conversation. Yeah bring her back for games!

NecrumOddBoy

Good conversation overall. She uses the same leftist rhetoric that Jaffe uses and it’s just pretty difficult to stomach listening to the victimhood mentality but this wasn’t bad.

NecrumOddBoy

She assumed LSM was all white so she framed it to make a point but Colin corrected her. She wasn’t being malicious but she was trying to make a slanted argument.

Save The Game Media

Asking “why does every game star a white dude” is completely different from “a black dude won’t hurt you”. Games staring white men are still plentiful and no one cares, the only difference is now there are games with non-white so others can be represented. One group just wanted to feel seen, not take away white people. The other group now gets offended if every game isn’t “white straight man” or “half naked lady”

Jaymin Ligsay

What a great conversation! I loved this episode so much

Pedro Dreher

This was an awesome convo, I hope she feels comfortable to come on and talk purely games. Love the insight.

Logan McDaniel

Big shout out to Alyssa for coming on the show, would love more conversations with industry folk that might not be come on in the past

David Parkhurst

Excellent conversation. Looking forward to having her on future episodes!

Graeme_Reaper

Alyssa seems really cool and engaging. Would love to see her on to just talk about games removed from the culture stuff

DeadMail

This was a great episode! Would love to see Alyssa on LSM again. She’s very well spoken and knowledgeable. I think she would bring a lot to the table as a more frequent commentator

william planas

I think this was good interview but a big chunk of it falls in the super worn out " we're just having conversations about having conversation bro" interview.

Joshua Carew (niftyneatclub)

After checking out this episode I'm really looking forward to Alyssa coming back. She was very entertaining. Her personality comes of as a great mix of quirky/knowledgeable/serious that kept me engaged.

Luke Oliveto

The overwhelmingly postive reception of this episode is very strange. I guess as long as you put on a polite demeanor it doesn't really matter if you don't really say much of anything. I won't say this episode was downright terrible, but I didn't exactly walk away from it with any deeper insight either. Maybe LSM has slowly been taken over by the same type of people that make up most of Kinda Funny and Easy Allies audience. This was a big nothing burger, Mercante was on her best behavior though and I guess that's apparently all it takes to win over the minds of many

Derek Williams

She seems like such a fun person. I feel like both of your personalities really meshed well together!

Save The Game Media

Not sure if Colin will see this but TJ Smash put up a video about this and it’s embarrassing He literally lies and says he has a source that: Colin and Alyssa are part of the same friend group and have had many dinners together in NYC because he thinks you live in Long Island. Anyway, great conversation

Fotis Lyto

If you have issue with seeing one race then it should be the same the other way. If saying "why are there so many white people in games" is legitimate, then saying "why are there so many black people now in games" is just as legitimate. Either all of it is ok or none. Also by definition if there are more black character there will be less white, it's pretty simple. Also I don't care if there are more or less black or white characters, I just want good games, but the double standard, is kinda disgusting.

Trevor Cripe

Great interview Colin, didn’t expect to listen to the whole thing, but this was a very engaging discussion.

BrenRoze

To echo what others have said, extremely engaging conversation and excellent chemistry. Would love to see Alyssa interact with some other members of LSM in the future!

Addison117

He truly is a dumbass.

NeO JD

Fireside Chat: LI edition

Colin Moriarty

Seriously one of my favorite episodes. Having people who, on paper, are diametrically opposed when it comes to perspectives; building a good rapport by simply having a level-headed, and civilized discussion. Hope-core

Gooch Gobbler

Surprised I've never seen this point made before really. We should make the space comfortable and attractive for others to enter. Especially if we want it to be the best it is going to be and for it to survive but it ultimately should cater to us

Gooch Gobbler

The sentence is the same but the situation and context is not. That is why it is not the same. You can pretend it is the same all you want in the nature of "fairness" or whatever but it's not. I hate reverse racism btw and do believe it is a thing and a double standard but that does not apply to representation. I like different looking characters as I simply get bored with the same stuff over and over again too

Gooch Gobbler

but the whole complaint about Anita or whatever is that they affect the content of the game so if you can't tell anything bad about the content then why would you care? The concern with AI, at least for me, is that it would replace developers or negatively affect the environment/economy, if I still got the game and it was still great, those negative affects would have still happened.

Captain Bon Clay

I simply don’t want to support anything to do with that vile woman, wether she has a positive or negative effect on a game doesn’t matter

Joey B

I didn't know anything about her other than something where she was suing TJ Smash so she was off to a good start for me. I could have listened to a whole show of them talking hockey. Would love to have her back on another show.

Fotis Lyto

If the phrase os the same but elicits different reaction depending on the skin colour of the person saying it, then it is double standards. You can "justify" it by saying "the context is different", it doesn't change the fact though. Also, there is no "reverse racism" it's all racism.

She seemed pretty reasonable. I had to look up why people don’t like her. I think hearing about that would have been more interesting from her perspective but I get that that probably would be a no go for an interview, no one wants to get into that about themselves. I think a lot of people get super antagonized on twitter and may not always respond the best. I am definitely sympathetic to the years of toxicity she’s had towards her gaming from her dad and the online community she played with.

This was a great episode! I don’t really have any previous knowledge of Alyssa Mercante, but I don’t know that that matters. This was an excellent, meaningful conversation and i hope to see her on this show again!
