They Disguise It, Hypnotize It | Sacred Symbols, Episode 412

What a week! On the back of Colin's PSN account being temporarily hijacked by nefarious forces, we have an enormous amount to get through for our ever-eager audience. We dissect what happened, why it happened, how we've been communicating with Sony to try and convince them to fix the major issues plaguing their online service, and what we feel you should do to protect yourself. But understand this, and understand it well: PSN's security is a complete joke. All an outsider needs to get access to your account is an email address and mundane information like the date you made a random purchase, and they'll give your account to basically anyone. Your password doesn't matter, your 2FA doesn't matter, and your passkey doesn't matter. To repeat: Your password doesn't matter, your 2FA doesn't matter, and your passkey doesn't matter. And if you want more proof, someone in our audience reset two of his own accounts back-to-back with PlayStation's hilariously-deficient (and potentially-compromised) third world customer service call centers, just to make the point. Sony must make serious changes and reunite people with their stolen PSN accounts, and we intend on pressing until they do. We are your loyal and dedicated customers. Remember? Other news this week includes the announcement of a fresh State of Play in early June, confirmation that PlayStation will no longer release its single-player games on PC, the official end of Destiny 2, the renaming of Fairgames, rumors of a return of Infamous, an increase in PS+ pricing, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Could Shuhei Yoshida ever return to PlayStation? Why have mergers and acquisitions dramatically slowed down in the games industry? Will Sony pull PS5s from shelves shortly after PS6 launches due to pricing tensions? Which members of Cobra would Chris and Dustin be? A new episode of Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast launches each Friday morning. This episode was so hot they had to drop it early 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🔥🔥🔥

SuperSonicFan69

Dustin showing his work ethic for LSM. He’s coming for you Brad.

Jose Cantu

Uuuuh. I mean I'll take it early. 😁

Josh Gamez

Early drop? LFG! (Even if I won't listen until tomorrow anyway lol)

Katyusha Mauro

Released on friday for everyone and STILL early for Patreons! You guys rock!!

Chris Zee

Hot Tip - You can add a + and any word letter to your Gmail address and you will still get emails to that account, so your PSN can theoretically have a different email than your normal email and you will still get emails. It will help as a stop gap hopefully. (Also helpful to identify which company you signed up for / mailing list sold your email names) Example firstnamelastname+psn123@gmail.com will still deliver emails to firstnamelastname@gmail.com

Stephen King

This is GREAT advice. I had no idea you could do this.

Hey Fellas, This has been a fascinating listen - a lot of the issues sound like it stems from what CX platform Playstation is using and the lack of capabilities it provides. I oversee all Sales for a CX Platform in US/UK and we see use cases like this all of the time. They are most likely using a legacy platform provider that hasn't updated with modern times for their Customer Service Agents to be properly equipped to handle this situations and identify fraud before it happens. (Proactive vs. Reactive) Colin - I would be more than happy to connect with someone on Playstation's CX Leadership team as my team can very much help this from happening to the Playstation Faithful in the future. The company I run Sales GTM is ujet.cx - I genuinely can help this situation at the root, because it goes deeper than just training their CX team better... they don't have the proper system/process to be able to execute more effectively. (a bit of a sales pitch, but also being very honest as well) Best Regards, Payton Stone

Colin: "this is a serious issue and Sony needs to address it" also Colin: *farts extremely loudly*

Avery Illies

I'll just say what I'm feeling as of late. FUCK PLAYSTATION. GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER.

bigmomfan

Welp. Time to put Bungie in the content vault for good.

kyghosts

30 minutes into this episode and I can already tell it’s an all timer. Nice work fellas

Ryan

How did the guy that let you know it was going to happen to you know the hacker just called you? Was he in on it? That’s the only thing that really confused me.

Kam Wallis

I'm confused why it was posted so early publicly? There seems to be little consistency lately with keeping things to Patreon for the advertised lengths....

Germanos

I do get the situation, but sharing your purchases with timestamps in public - please don't do that. NEVER!

Germanos

I wonder if the reason why PlayStation does not do something about is because it would block the account recovery process in honest cases or open accounts being stolen by claiming you got hacked. The scenario with the sold console on Ebay - well if someone sold it with the account active... will figures. But alas... I'm in the EU :D My bank app has a feature where, if someone is calling me and claiming to be from my bank, the app should show that someone is calling me and what the bank employee's name and ID number are.

Jonathan

Bad news regarding emails. Sometimes people forget their login email, so that Support can look it up via the PSN ID. This step is meant to raise a red flag, but because account recovery is discretionary, some reps may overlook it. Sony shouldn't allow Support to bypass passkey accounts; this is a highly secure feature and should be effectively unrecoverable if you've lost your passkey and backup key(s). Alternatively, these accounts should require significant information and a thorough vetting process before they are recovered.

dooopy_boi

Maybe watch the episode 👍

Panda Junkie

This is directed at Chris, although idk if he sees shit here, Curry Barkers parents do work in the industry but are bit players & have done nothing of note. His mostly works on plays, his mom does props. He is by far the most prominent one by Thats A Bad Idea alone, before Obsession. So while I feel you on the nepo bs im not sure this qualifies. Its not exactly a Please Don't Destroy situation, but those dudes movie was funny at least.

Anodyne

I've recently had my account stolen in this exact manner. It's an old, 3 digit account. Is there some way I can reach out to you guys with my story?

Germanos

Colin's personal agenda towards Bungie is cringe 😬.

Germanos

I like the write-in about "changing the mind of the hate mob" as it nails the problem. How f-up is this that games need to care about hate campaigns against them before release. How can this be?

thesonofit

Incredibly good points made about the insanity of THE situation by all of you. Changed my email, restricted my profile and deleted all my payment methods right away. This company's neglegence and callousness towards its customers is (still!) unheard of. How can this be??!!

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

Another simple change I was thinking might help with accounts getting stolen. Don't allow you to turn off two factor authentication WITHOUT doing the two factor authentication... Seems simple.

JoshM

I get where Dustin’s coming from about Destiny 3, and I wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to a new, Destiny-inspired, IP. But the world is so vast, I’m confident you could make a new game in that universe that is vastly different and unique, like how they’ve done it with Marathon

Tankbuster

Morning Gentlemen - love the discourse around the hack situation. (Chris' face expecting something to be done about this is priceless). I'd like to acknowledge the fact that you all can be as loud as you want about this is because you all take no partner incentives from Sony. It gives you the authority and autonomy to shout this from the hills when most other media PSN accounts would be recovered and implicitly know they can't voice similar frustrations or face being blackballed. Bravo dudes. Been here since day 1 and will continue to support for the independent journalism. Happy Memorial Day.

Big Chungus 420

Greg Miller x Colin Moriarty, make it happen

Guybrush Threepwood

"Some names you would know have also had their PSN accounts stolen, but they don't talk about it publicly." HMMMMM. Like who??? Greg Miller? I bet these people don't talk about it because 1) they don't want to risk rubbing sony the wrong way and losing their access, 2) they realize their audience would expect them to actually try to do something about the problem, with their large platforms, and they'd rather not bother. They just use their connections to quietly get their accounts back and pretend it never happened.

Kevin Cooper

Colin should interview Philip Reitinger -- the former Homeland Security Official that Sony hired after the 2011 PSN hack -- and ask him HOW CAN THIS BE!!

Surge!

This was the first thing I listened to on an 8 hour drive to my new state. Little did I know, it would be a barn-burner of an episode. It played out like a murder mystery over my speakers, leaving me to wonder just how deep the web of criminality went. Excellent episode guys (not so much for Colin, that suck ass)
