Please welcome Rhys Elliott back to Sacred Symbols+. As you may recall, Rhys is Head of Market Analysis at data firm Alinea Analytics, and he's previously joined me (Colin) on the show to talk about the ever-interesting business side of our industry. To that end, we focus on four major topics during our newest two-ish hour chat: PlayStation, Xbox, Grand Theft Auto VI, and Valve's Steam Machine. Will Sony deeply subsidize PlayStation 6 hardware? Does Xbox have any realistic possibility whatsoever of correcting its hardware's trajectory? Why are people so eager to pre-order GTA6 physical copies that aren't quite real? Is Valve over its skis with its console? We answer all of these questions -- and many, many more! -- on the other side of the play button.

Note: due to heat related technical issues, the audio sounds a bit rough.

NUTSO JIMBO

I love episodes like these with lots of industry analysis and prediction. I’m not sure if possible but if I were Sony… I’d launch the Portable first in Japan - maybe in March 2027? Then bring the portable to the US/EU - maybe September 2027? Then release the home console PS6 a year later in 2028 Push the portable first and capture Japan. People in the west seem happy with PS5 or PS5 Pro at home for now. Sell them the portable first maybe?

BigDumbStupidIdiot

The PS6P needs to be at a competitive price with Switch 2. With the way components are skyrocketing, I think end it'll end up being like $650-$700

Christopher Gourley

Wasn't Returnal also $70 at launch? I don't think that's a credible reason for Saros selling fewer copies than Returnal.

WhatDarrenPlays

Too much console war shit, it's getting cringe.

Greg Norman

Will Collin regurgitate the same exact talking points he’s had for years for the 358th times??? Find out on this riveting episode of SS+!!!

Brian

I really enjoyed this conversation a lot. Good job Collin.

Subeg

Rhys my dawg 🩶

Nicholas Renaud

I have been saying it can’t be over 900$ for the more expensive one.

Nicholas Renaud

Great episode boys. Another “Colin was right” addition. Having Rhys for the backup numbers is awesome, although next time I’d love more numbers of games sold mentioned. Thanks!

Chase Day

So don't listen 🧐

Jacob Lesperance

Colin shoukd have Xbox PR on. Jez is essentially that.

KYisLife

Next time Rhys is on could the conversation be more about his insight into estimated sales? Felt like it was lightly discussed but not much.

Froilan

Lmao do we expect someone to completely have different rationale and logic week to week?

Mr. Scott If You're Nasty

Two people who never interact with the Xbox ecosystem talking about the Xbox ecosystem. Don't get me wrong there are problems and hurdles ahead, but it's easy to see the disdain for Xbox peeking through.

Bisexual Lighting Rigger

I understand the idea that Sony has no choice but to go forward with the PS6. But honestly, they should just start over and launch after 2030. Nobody is clamouring for a PS6, literally nobody. Give me a selling point other than the portability? It probably won't have exclusives. It's probably going to be like 1000$. Why would anyone buy one if they have a PS5 Pro? The reason people are mad about the Steam machine is the same exact criticisms we will have for the PS6.

Save Scum Goblin

“i don’t know why ppl give him the time of day” yea i agree. smash jt has been named dropped every other ep and every stream in the past 6 months. he seems like he single handedly did a number on the company. let’s stop mentioning him 👍

Dante B

Someone send this man an AC and a new mic please

Pan Ic

Oh, its this talk again.

Kenneth Fox

Is it console warring accurately stating where Xbox is now?

Captain Falcon

I love when Colin speaks the truth about how bad xbox has failed. It's music to my ears

Captain Falcon

Did you miss the part where they criticized playstation?

WhatDarrenPlays

I’m just tired of them talking about people on Twitter, “the fanbase” and throwing jabs constantly and then also feeling like they need to compare PlayStation all the time. I don’t care. I don’t have an Xbox, I don’t follow or know of these people on Twitter. Some business critique is fine but it’s really getting repetitive now. I wish they would get off Twitter it’s embarrassing really.

mattyboy316

Loved this conversation between you guys!

Tom Griffin

I actually agree. Too many times the response to this critique is "but they criticize Sony too?" - guys the point is the conversation is boring and done to death, not that it ever comes off as one sided. No one cares about Twitter trolls and bubble communities online, so why do we talk about them so much. The industry is far too interesting to focus so much time on these morons - yet so much of the conversation appears to revolve around them.

NeO JD

Col, Quick Resume isn’t just jumping between games, it’s literally picking back up from where you were instantaneously. Best example I’ll give you: there have been times where I haven’t even touched my Series X for months, go back to it, click the game icon, no loading, BOOM right where I was. Even PS5 Pro ain’t touching it. It really is a slept on feature. My favorite feature of this gen and hope everybody does it going forward.

NeonAstra

If you don't have some level of disdain for how Xbox has been led this last decade, you haven't been paying attention.

Mr. Scott If You're Nasty

Completely agree. This past leadership has been abysmal and they've been really stupid, but when you're trying to ostensibly cover them objectively, I shouldnt be able to see the bias so quickly and easily.

James Schorn

As much as I understand the shit show that is Xbox, Colin going at Xbox gamers for holding out any hope for their ecosystem as if he didn’t have a meltdown when his PSN account was at risk. It’s weird that he can’t imagine that being himself if PS were in the same situation. Some people out there have staked their entire gaming lives and for some even careers on that brand it’s really no surprise they don’t want to believe it will just go belly up.

Caleb Peacock

Colin is a noticer he can’t help noticing

Gooch Gobbler

Of course Colin finds a way to shit on quick resume lol it's just a great feature

Gooch Gobbler

Yeah I have no idea how he found a way to shit on that feature. I prefer PS over XBOX but man quick resume/back compat FPS boost/the rewards program are great features they have over PS
