It's been 15 long years since PlayStation has dealt with PR as bad as it's currently experiencing, all on the back of its surprise announcement that -- beginning in early 2028 -- new games will cease being sold on-disc. You don't exactly have to squint at the data to understand that physical purchasers are a vanishing minority of PlayStation's userbase, and indeed, Sony's decision to make this move indicates they felt comfortable doing it from a commercial point-of-view. Yet, to many, such a move comes off as callous, tone-deaf, and particularly cutting to a sizeable portion of the brand's long-time, loyal customers. It's quite the conundrum! To speak to me (Colin) about the craziness in great depth, I invited Tom from Moore's Law Is Dead and the Broken Silicon Podcast. Please join us at your leisure, and for the sunshine-disinclined, please forgive us for our Solar Boys chatter near the beginning. We can't help ourselves.

Yes, it's an early episode.

Awesome! An early drop AND it's a Tom episode.

I just cancelled PS Plus for the first time in six years because they clearly don’t care about the fanbase.

C

I mean the reported comment that was floating around was basically confirming this, that comment has turned me off them more than the whole physical issue.

That Bloodborne remake is 100% going to be a launch title on the PS6, exclusively for it. It makes too much sense and would basically be them giving the finger to people and saying “well here it is, let’s see how much you want to play it”. You just know people would be all over it.

Colin, if Sony doesn’t backtrack then I have a suggestion: have someone like Destin Legarie do a SS+ with axioms about PlayStation like you did on Xbox. I am just so disheartened about PS right now…

Great episode! Tom is the best

Johnny Lamotte

Finally someone who’s knowledgeable in this subject lol Tom is spot on!! It’s way more deeper, and I was bringing up the whole 2 console thing too with my friends. Why is it so hard for other gaming commentators to understand this… it’s odd to me. Great episode

I personally enjoy the solar talk

As a spurned PlayStation “fan”, I truly hope this is PS’s “Xbox One” moment. Let’s reset the board. Competition is not only healthy, but essential, as we can clearly see. Sony needs to turn away from the dark side and back toward their slowly eroding loyal base.

SOCIAL ENGINEERING IS HACKING. It’s the most common kind of hack lol. This keeps coming up

Colin mentioned he's never put a disc inside his PS5. It would be hilarious for Micah to stick a disc inside and take its virginity and have Colin live with the shame anytime he turns it on... the PS5 I mean 😏

I really think this whole moment will have no significant impact on Sony. We’ll see how all these new releases sell in the super stacked September for Sony and we can have a real sense then. Gamers largely can’t afford to just sell their systems and buy a new PC rig + repurchase their libraries. Most people don’t have that kind of money sitting around

I canceled my Ps Plus for the first time in 16 years. I get what Colin is saying, but there’s ways I’m going about fucking Sony. First, never getting PS Plus again. Continuing to buy PS5, PS4, PS3, Vita games except only used so they get nothing. Just not buying any first party or Sony published game unless it’s at a massive discount like 75 percent off. Making sure I continue to give them shit every time they do anything. Not buying 2 PS6s like I was going to do and instead forever stay on PS5, PS3, and Vita. I planned for times like these. I have enough games to be satisfied for life. Fuck Sony

Chris Martin

Is there YouTube link for this or is it audio only?

Mr. Scott If You're Nasty

When I hear I didn't talk about most of the stuff that happened with Sony, I understand I protected Sony.

Who’s making it?

Look it’s fun to do the cross over but Moore’s Law is Dead is dreadful at predicting market trends. Seriously, it would be nice if Colin managed the involvement a bit because you are leading an audience to believe this guy has a good track record but he doesn’t. I’ve been listening to him for a long time you can safely discard most of what he says about how the market will move. Also AMD releasing FSR4 on RDNA 3 at the same time as Steam machine? Connected? Hell naw it was because of Twitter comments. And Nvidia is totally running back DLSS 5 guys, trust this guy, just like they rolled back the fake pixels and the fake frames. Wake up Colin.

sigh Anyone remembers why NFTs didn't work?

I've been interested in getting solar. My electric bill was $700 last month and i expect it to gwt higher foe yhe month of July. Between cental air, window air conditioners for rooms that the central air doesnt suffice, hot tub, pool filter and 3 gaming PC's plus multiple devices. With a family of 5 we use alot of power. It seems so intimidating and like something only wealthy people could afford. I see NY state subsidies or tax credits, so maybe it is possible. Is it something an average middle class family could afford? I'll have to do my research but now you got me interested.

I think if they had tonchangr the word "buy" yo "rent* ot" lease" on the store front for games i would moay likely boycott. Even a game likrle grand theft auto. I think I would stubbornly refuse the rent or lease the game. Even though that is in fact what we are doing. Maybe just changibg the language would make a big difference. If they coukd force them to change that through regulation i think alot of people would do the same ad be and that would change the conversation and push things in the right direction.

I honestly love Tom’s PlayStation Ark idea. A wumbo drive with all of your downloaded games? Love it. I’m researching making one myself.

I think Colin and Sony are misreading the situation. They are placing too much weight on the GaaS whales that currently generate a ton of revenue on PlayStation. While important, they are not the ones who sustain the platform through good times and bad. When a shiny new trend comes along and those people chase it, they will be missing the core PlayStation fans. That’s how the platform will die. The PS3 gen was rough for Sony but they did so much to cultivate their core. PS5 has done little to cultivate the core. Now they are straight up alienating the core.

I've worked out the no games buyer users, their family members like my sister who just plays the games I have installed.
