The Great PlayStation Disc Debacle | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 525

It's been 15 long years since PlayStation has dealt with PR as bad as it's currently experiencing, all on the back of its surprise announcement that -- beginning in early 2028 -- new games will cease being sold on-disc. You don't exactly have to squint at the data to understand that physical purchasers are a vanishing minority of PlayStation's userbase, and indeed, Sony's decision to make this move indicates they felt comfortable doing it from a commercial point-of-view. Yet, to many, such a move comes off as callous, tone-deaf, and particularly cutting to a sizeable portion of the brand's long-time, loyal customers. It's quite the conundrum! To speak to me (Colin) about the craziness in great depth, I invited Tom from Moore's Law Is Dead and the Broken Silicon Podcast. Please join us at your leisure, and for the sunshine-disinclined, please forgive us for our Solar Boys chatter near the beginning. We can't help ourselves.

E3 2013! Jack, Could sell a Convertible Christler Lebaron on a sinking Ferry. Not a question. Just Saying.

Paid actors is my thought on all the negative posts, but only time will tell. Very insightful conversation, still think they won’t change course because like you said and I think many agree. We like the storefront, the few exclusives we do get are top notch, familiar with the systems, trophies and most importantly, where are you going to go truly?

2026-09-05 18:00 One thing I cant wrap my head around is Colin saying ‘this is what I want’ about physical games going away. If he means more focus on digital, sure I get that, but they haven’t said anything on that. Not caring personally is fair, but imo there is no good reason for any consumer to want physical games to go away because, at least in how they announced it, there is nothing positive about the news for anyone but Sony, and an option staying has no impact on any of us.

Tbh I’ve been naturally playing more on Switch over the last year. The reduced number of exclusives - that imo aren’t anywhere near as varied or interesting as they used to be - along with no real character to the brand and the array of bad decisions this gen, there is some resistance I’m feeling. While I still expect PS will be what I primarily play on, my connection to it is nowhere near as strong as it once was

They will never great a license for digital games "as long as the company exists" or with any other open language. it would be corporate suicide to do so. The reason they want to get out of disc games is because it is bad business for them, the profits aren't there and it cripples their ability to innovate. They don't know the future and obligating themselves to maintain a CDN serving exabytes of data even if their business shifts away from online distribution creates an open ended legally enforceable liability. Imagine if they had the same commitment for discs. They would be forced to maintain factories and supply chain, build consoles with bulky disk drives all to lose money just to satisfy a legal liability. Eventually they would be forced to exit the business entirely because their user agreement chained them to a model that made the business insolvent.

PlayStation really needs to figure out that if I buy digital let me keep that copy for as long as I live man like what you mean I can’t play my copy of Infamous 2 on PS5? Also they have a whole ass premium tier where they promised a classics collection but it’s so slow on release like wtf I remember on PS3 we’d get new PS1 PS2 games every month consistently not just 1 or 2 a month like wtf is that service other than the cloud streaming 🔥

With all hands on deck this early for TWO shows, you know there is serious weight behind the backlash.

If their business shifts away from delivering content online it's finished anyway. They created this problem alongside other media companies that proved digital storefronts don't offer any kind of legacy support for their own products. Sony isn't Apple, it would be one thing if they ran an Appstore where some apps loose support over the 25 years that storefront has been in existence. Apps lose support all the time, but that's the nature of a mobile product when it loses support from paying users . The games that Sony sells are a different kind of product that needs constant support if you're going to replace people's physical libraries with digital ones. Console gaming has always had physical media that allowed people to store and play their games how they want. If Sony is abandoning the main appeal of having control of your library and a possessing a financial stake in your platform (that they could resell), then it's their problem to figure out how to make their customers whole. They need to restore some level of ownership to the customer that isn't a revocable license for menial reasons. No-one is saying they expect to resell digital games, but who would ever trust to buy a game from you again, if you're unwilling to protect that investment. Steam has been doing this exact thing for the last 20 years. Their platform spans across multiple devices and competes with other storefronts, but they've mostly managed to keep people's libraries intact for all this time because they are dedicated to supporting people's legacy purchases. It's their greatest strength, and amongst their console peers that deliberate over which generations of games and storefronts they'll cut support from, you can still access the Steam games you'd bought back in the X360 era.

You said something about why doesn't Sony look at the EULA and consider letting you own the game. Ownership means you can sell or lend the product. This is the very reason you don't own it.

1.4 MwH produced in June on my 8KW system. Tell Moore’s Law he can suck Colorado’s 358 days of annual sunshine! Was wild to learn you had Ion solar (us too) and use the Enphase Enlighten app—!

I feel like Sony got to same place as Xbox in different way. Xbox bought Activision and got all of Microsoft looking at it. Sony is pretty much all about PlayStation now and all eyes / decisions making are on them. Feels like PS3 Sony is back!
